To set up a suitcase-style wire dog crate, release its side latch, unfold the first side completely, raise the second side, then lift and hook the front and rear panels into place. To collapse that documented design, unhook the panels and reverse the sequence. The exact hook positions, latch style and folding order can differ, so keep the manual for your brand and model beside you.
These instructions describe the Pet Lodge-style wire crate documented in the manufacturer’s guide. They are a practical framework for a common folding crate, not a substitute for the instructions supplied with a different model.

Before you start
Put the folded crate on a level, clear floor with the removable pan on the bottom. Give yourself enough room to swing each panel outward without hitting furniture, walls or another person. Keep the dog away while you are unfolding the metal panels; a partially locked panel can move suddenly.

- Find the side latch. The folded unit is held together by a locking latch on the side. It must be released before you try to unfold the crate.
- Identify the front and rear panels. The front normally contains the main door. The rear may look similar but can have a different hook or hinge arrangement.
- Check for accessories. Remove a divider, bowl holder or other insert that could block a panel while you are folding or unfolding it. Reinstall accessories only after the crate frame is secure.
- Have the manual available. Manufacturers use different hook layouts and latches even when two crates look alike.
Do not put a dog in the crate while any panel is still being positioned. Assembly is a mechanical task; crate acclimation is a separate training process.

How to set up the wire dog crate
Follow these steps for the suitcase-style design covered by the Pet Lodge guide. The critical detail is to unfold the first side fully before attempting to raise the second.
1. Release the folded crate
- Set the folded crate on the floor with the pan underneath.
- Release the side locking latch.
- Keep your fingers clear of the wire joints as the panels begin to move.
If the latch will not release, do not bend the wire or pry it with a tool. Look for a panel that is pressing against the latch, then consult the model’s manual for the release direction. Stand to the side rather than directly over the bundle so you can step back if a panel shifts.
2. Lay the first side down completely
- Unfold one side all the way and lay it flat on the floor.
- Make sure the side has reached its full open position rather than stopping at a partial angle.
The Pet Lodge instructions specifically warn that the second side will not lift easily when the first side is only partly unfolded. A half-open side can also leave the frame under tension, so correct the first side before moving on. If you feel resistance, return the panel toward the flat position and check that no wire is caught on the pan or a nearby object.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3. Raise the second side
- Lift the remaining side panel.
- Bring both sides upright so they stand perpendicular to the floor.
- Hold the frame steady while you prepare the front panel.
At this point the crate should form an open rectangular frame, but it is not ready for a dog until the front and rear panels are hooked and the doors and latches have been checked. View the corners from above: the side panels should be parallel rather than leaning inward, and the base should remain seated on the pan.
4. Fit the front panel over the top
- Reach inside the open frame and pull the front panel upward and outward.
- As the panel approaches vertical, lift the top panel enough to let the front panel pass through.
- Move the front panel to the outside of the crate.
- Place its two upper hooks over the top panel, following the orientation shown in the manual.
Use a controlled lift rather than forcing the panel. If the top panel does not rise enough for the front panel to pass, check that both side panels are fully upright and that no divider or door hardware is in the way. Keep one hand supporting the panel until both hooks are visibly over the top; a single hook is not a secure connection.
5. Repeat with the rear panel
- Pull the rear panel up and outward from inside the frame.
- Lift the top panel just enough for the rear panel to clear it.
- Set the rear panel outside the crate.
- Engage both of its upper hooks over the top panel.
Both front and rear panels must be supported by their specified hooks. Do not rely on the weight of the panel or on a door latch to hold the frame together. Walk around the crate and look at each hook from the side. If a hook sits beside, rather than over, the top wire, reposition the panel before continuing.
6. Perform a pre-use security check
- Confirm that the front and rear hooks are fully seated on the top panel.
- Check that the side panels are upright and not bowed or caught on a wire.
- Open and close each door, then engage its latch completely.
- Make sure the removable pan sits flat and cannot slide out through an opening.
- If the crate has a divider, verify that it is locked in the position specified by the manual.
- Inspect the assembled frame for a gap, loose wire or sharp projection before allowing the dog inside.
- Press lightly on each panel to confirm that it stays in place without rattling out of its hooks.
The Pet Lodge guide says panels and doors should be secured according to that model’s instructions. That qualification matters: another manufacturer may use different hooks, hinges or a separate locking bar. If the manual calls for an additional clip or pin, install it even when the frame already appears stable.

How to collapse the crate for storage
For the documented Pet Lodge design, takedown is the reverse of setup. The manufacturer states: “NOTE: To take down the wire crate, simply reverse the set-up instructions.” In practical order, remove the panel hooks first, fold the front and rear panels inward, fold the sides down and secure the folded unit with its side latch.
1. Empty and prepare the crate
- Move the dog to a safe area away from the folding frame.
- Remove bedding, bowls, the divider and any other loose items.
- Take out the pan if it prevents the panels from folding on your model.
- Open the doors so they do not catch on a side panel or divider.
Keep the doors positioned as the manual shows. On some designs an open door clears the frame; on another, a door may need to be latched while the crate is folded. This is one of the details that cannot be assumed from appearance alone.
2. Release the front and rear hooks
- Support the front panel with one hand.
- Lift or disengage its two upper hooks using the motion shown in the manual.
- Fold the front panel inward into the crate.
- Repeat for the rear panel.
Do not pull hard if a hook is stuck. A door, divider or misaligned side can hold the panel under pressure. Reposition the obstruction and try again; if the latch design differs, stop and follow the model-specific instructions. Keep your free hand away from the crossing wires as the panel drops inward.
3. Fold the sides down
- With the front and rear panels inside, lower one side panel flat.
- Lower the other side panel over it in the order indicated by the manual.
- Keep hands outside the crossing wire joints while the panels stack.
The finished bundle should lie flat with the pan underneath or alongside it, depending on the model. Never force a side down against a panel that has not cleared its hinge or hook. If the stack is uneven, lift the top side again and find the panel or accessory causing the interference instead of pressing harder.

- Align the folded panels.
- Close the side latch so the bundle cannot spring open while it is carried or stored.
- Lift the folded crate only after confirming that the latch has engaged.
Store the crate where the wire will not be struck by heavy objects and where a child or unsupervised dog cannot open the latch. Keep the manual with the folded crate so the correct sequence is available the next time it is needed.
What to do when a panel will not move
The second side will not stand up
Return the first side to its fully unfolded position. The Pet Lodge design depends on that side being completely flat; a partly opened panel can prevent the opposite side from lifting. Check that the pan is not tilted and that no bedding, divider or other item is trapped between the wires.
The front or rear panel will not pass the top
Check that the top panel is lifted enough, both side panels are perpendicular to the floor and no divider or door hardware is blocking the route. Do not twist the panel to force it through. Lower it, reset the side panels, and try the same controlled path shown in the manual.

A hook will not seat
Lower the panel slightly, align its upper wires with the hook locations and try again. If the hook shape or placement does not match these steps, use the manual for your model rather than assuming the Pet Lodge sequence applies. Never substitute a cord, clip or improvised fastener for a missing hook.
The crate will not fold flat
Open the doors, remove the divider and confirm that every front and rear hook has been released. A single engaged hook can hold the frame open. If the panel still catches, stop and inspect the hinge and latch area for a bent wire or obstruction.
The side latch will not close
Make sure the panels are fully stacked and aligned. Never carry the crate with an unengaged latch. A damaged latch or bent frame requires the manufacturer’s service guidance before the crate is used again.
Safety checks before a dog enters
Correct assembly does not by itself make confinement safe. A Petco/You & Me manual warns that confining a dog without proper acclimation and training can cause serious harm. Purina likewise recommends introducing a crate gradually and positively.
Remove snag-prone gear
Remove the dog’s collar, lead, harness, identification tags and clothing before securing the dog, as advised by the Petco/You & Me manual. Purina separately advises removing a collar so it cannot catch on the crate. Check the dog and the crate each time rather than assuming yesterday’s setup is unchanged.
Introduce the crate gradually
- Leave the door open and allow the dog to investigate at its own pace.
- Use treats or food to encourage entry; do not push or drag the dog inside.
- Start with brief periods and increase closed-door time gradually.
- Watch for distress and shorten the session if the dog is not coping.
These steps are training guidance, not assembly steps. A dog that has not been acclimated should not be shut into a newly assembled crate simply because the latches are secure. Assembly and training can happen on different days; the dog does not need to be present while you learn the folding mechanism.
Choose an appropriate interior size
The dog should be able to stand and turn around without squeezing through the entrance. Purina notes that an oversized puppy crate may allow a separate toileting area, so a growing puppy may need a divider or a different size as it develops. Apply that general guidance to the individual dog rather than relying on a single age or weight label. Recheck the fit as the dog grows, especially after moving a divider.

Why instructions differ between folding wire crates
“Wire crate” describes a category, not one universal mechanism. Carlson’s Small Double-Door crate is described as folding flat, with front and side doors, a removable pan and a manual. Ferplast describes its DOG ZONE as a no-tool foldable metal crate with its own assembly instructions. Those examples show why a familiar-looking crate can still have a different folding order or locking system.
Before using any generic sequence, compare your crate with its manual:
- Where the storage latch is located and how it releases.
- Whether the front and rear panels hook over the top or attach by another method.
- Which side folds first.
- Whether doors must be open, closed or latched during folding.
- How the pan and divider are removed.
- Whether a second door changes the panel path.
- Whether the crate requires a pin, clip or other secondary lock after the hooks engage.
If any of those details conflict with the steps above, the model-specific manual takes priority. Do not infer a safe sequence from a product photograph alone.
Buying or replacing a folding wire crate: features that affect setup
If you are choosing a crate, focus on the features that determine whether assembly and storage will suit your space. Do not assume that a model’s advertised door count or fold-flat claim guarantees the same mechanism as another crate.
| Documented example | Features stated by the manufacturer | Size information |
|---|---|---|
| Carlson Small Double-Door Dog Crate | Folds flat; front and side doors; removable pan; manual included | 24 inches long × 18 inches wide × 20.5 inches high; listed for dogs up to 22 inches long and 16 inches tall |
| Ferplast DOG ZONE | No-tool foldable metal crate; manufacturer provides assembly instructions | Product page cited here does not establish a dimension or dog-size limit |
The Carlson dimensions and fit claim apply only to that listed model. When comparing any crate, measure the dog’s standing and turning space, confirm the entrance is usable and check whether the manufacturer supplies a manual for the exact size and configuration. Also consider where you will store the folded bundle, how easily one person can move it, and whether the pan can be removed for cleaning without dismantling the frame.
A quick setup-and-storage checklist
Setup
- Side latch released.
- First side completely unfolded and flat.
- Second side upright and perpendicular to the floor.
- Front panel passed through the raised top and both hooks engaged.
- Rear panel passed through the raised top and both hooks engaged.
- Doors, pan, divider and frame checked before use.
- No collar, lead, harness, tags or clothing on the dog before confinement.
Collapse
- Dog, bedding and accessories removed.
- Doors opened and dividers cleared.
- Front and rear hooks released.
- Front and rear panels folded inward.
- Side panels folded down in the model’s specified order.
- Storage latch engaged before carrying or storing.
Key takeaway
For the documented suitcase-style wire crate, the reliable method is simple: release the latch, fully unfold one side, raise the other, hook the front and rear panels over the top, and check every door and connection. Collapse it by reversing those actions. Because folding mechanisms vary, treat the manual for the exact crate as the final authority, and treat gradual acclimation and removal of snag-prone gear as essential parts of safe use.

Why will the second side not lift?
On the documented design, the first side must be unfolded completely and laid flat. A partly unfolded first side can prevent the second side from rising easily.
Should the dog wear a collar in a wire crate?
The Petco/You & Me manual advises removing the collar, lead, harness, identification tags and clothing before confinement, and Purina separately warns that a collar can catch on the crate.
What should I do if a panel or hook is stuck?
Do not force, twist or pry it. Check for a door, divider, misaligned side or other obstruction, then consult the model-specific manual if the hook or latch does not match the documented design.

Keep the door open initially, let the dog investigate, use treats or food without forcing entry, and increase closed-door periods gradually. Secure assembly alone does not replace acclimation and training.
