A dog-walking business can become full-time work, but there is no guaranteed salary: steady income depends on recurring clients, efficient routes, locally appropriate pricing, and control of expenses. Pet Sitters International (PSI) reported average gross revenue of US$112,423 for U.S. member pet-sitting businesses in 2025. That is a survey result for a varied group of businesses—not a forecast of what a new solo dog walker will earn, and not take-home pay.
Can a dog walking business provide full-time income?
It can, if the business brings in enough paid work to cover operating costs, taxes, and the owner’s personal income needs. Gross revenue is the money the business brings in before expenses. Profit is what remains after business expenses; take-home income is further affected by taxes and personal circumstances. The available figures do not establish average net income for a typical full-time solo dog walker.

PSI’s 2026 survey reported US$112,423 in average gross revenue for U.S. member pet-sitting businesses in 2025, compared with US$100,537 in 2023—a reported increase of 12%. Respondents included solo sitters and walkers as well as businesses with partners or staff, so the average is not limited to dog walking or one-person businesses. PSI also reported that U.S. respondents averaged 113 households and 4,200 visits in 2025; those are survey results, not targets every new business can expect to reach. PSI’s 2026 survey announcement and income overview explain the scope of the figures.

PSI said 68% of respondents expected revenue growth in the coming year. That is a stated expectation from survey participants, not a verified forecast. Employee pay statistics for animal-care workers measure a different thing and should not be used as a proxy for a business owner’s revenue or profit. The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ occupational information describes employee work and pay, not a typical owner’s business income.

How to start a dog walking business
-
Check demand in the area you can realistically serve
Choose specific neighborhoods and the days and hours you can work. Compare independent walkers, pet sitters, and app-based services, then ask prospective customers which recurring walk times are difficult to fill. Market research and competitor analysis can help identify customers and ways to distinguish a small business, as the U.S. Small Business Administration’s market-research guidance explains.
-
Define the service and plan a workable route
Decide what you will offer: walk duration, days, service radius, holiday availability, and whether you will also provide drop-in visits. Set clear cancellation and scheduling terms. Estimate how many paid visits fit into a day after travel, handoffs, client messages, and administration. A full calendar is not necessarily an efficient one if drive time leaves too few hours for paid work.

Set prices using local costs and paid time
Compare rates for similar services nearby, then account for travel, gaps between bookings, payment fees, supplies, insurance, taxes, and time spent on communication. A price that looks competitive per walk can still leave too little revenue per working hour if the route is spread out. PSI notes that rates vary by location and that workload affects revenue; its income overview is context, not a universal price list.

Choose a business structure and register as required
Your structure can affect taxes, paperwork, financing options, and personal liability. A sole proprietorship is relatively simple to form, but it does not separate business and personal liabilities. An LLC or other structure should not be treated as eliminating every possible liability. Compare the implications for your circumstances and seek locally appropriate professional advice if needed. The SBA’s business-structure guidance outlines the factors to consider.

Verify licenses, permits, and tax obligations locally
There is no single nationwide dog-walker license rule established by these sources. Requirements depend on the activity and location, so check the relevant state, county, and city agencies for business registration, licenses, permits, and taxes. The SBA directs owners to state and local authorities because requirements and fees vary; BLS notes that many states require self-employed animal-care and service workers to hold a business license. See SBA guidance and BLS occupational information.
-
Keep records and understand self-employment taxes
The IRS explains that a sole proprietor or independent contractor carrying on a trade or business is self-employed; the activity does not have to be full-time to qualify. Keep records of income and expenses and check the federal, state, and local rules that apply to you. Payments received through apps may still be taxable and reportable. Consult IRS Publication 334 and the IRS guidance on payment-app reporting, or speak with a qualified tax professional.

Review insurance and put client terms in writing
Walking dogs and entering clients’ homes create risks that merit careful review. Compare policy limits, covered activities, exclusions, and price with an appropriately licensed insurance agent; do not assume a general liability policy covers animals in your care. Use written service terms and maintain client records for access instructions, emergency contacts, dog-handling needs, cancellations, and service changes. PSI’s startup checklist includes pet-sitter liability insurance and a service contract as possible considerations, not universal requirements.

Budget for supplies and preparedness
Build a startup budget around the work you actually plan to do. PSI’s checklist names possible costs such as a pet first-aid course, business supplies, advertising, insurance, a service contract, business-phone costs, and comfortable shoes; needs and costs vary. A dog walking leash may be useful as backup or standardized equipment, but many clients will prefer their dog’s familiar leash. Agree on equipment with each client rather than assuming you must supply it.

Build repeat bookings before depending on the income
Track inquiries, conversions, repeat bookings, cancellations, drive time, and revenue per working hour. Expand capacity only when demand and route efficiency support it. These measures help you judge whether the business is moving toward a sustainable full-time workload; they are operating checks, not published industry benchmarks.
How to judge whether the business is becoming sustainable
Review the business using your own actual results rather than a national gross-revenue average. A useful monthly review separates revenue from costs and asks whether booked work is recurring, whether travel leaves enough time for paid visits, and whether cancellations or unpaid administration are eroding the schedule.
- Demand: Are inquiries turning into repeat clients for the time slots you can serve?
- Route efficiency: How much of each workday is paid walking time versus travel and gaps?
- Pricing: Does revenue per working hour cover operating costs and leave room for taxes and owner income?
- Reliability: Are service terms, client records, and backup plans clear enough to manage changes and emergencies?
- Cash flow: Are records current enough to see income, expenses, and upcoming obligations?
Adjust the service area, schedule, or pricing when the records show that the current setup is not working. Adding more visits is not automatically the answer if they require excessive travel or leave insufficient time for safe, dependable care.
