How To Stop a Cat From Peeing in the House (And Why They Do It)

New house-soiling can signal a medical problem, so start with a veterinary examination and urinalysis. Then distinguish spraying from urination and address litter-box setup, lingering odor, and household stress.

A cat that suddenly pees outside the litter box may be in pain, unable to reach the box, reacting to another cat, or avoiding a box it finds unpleasant. It is not usually revenge or spite. Start by treating new house-soiling as a possible medical problem, then work through the litter-box setup, odor removal, and household stressors.

First, check whether your cat is urinating or spraying. The difference points toward different solutions.

First, check for a medical problem

Arrange a veterinary examination and urinalysis if your cat has newly started peeing in the house. Cats can have urinary inflammation, kidney disease, diabetes, arthritis, mobility problems, or cognitive decline without looking dramatically ill. Pain or urgency may make a cat avoid the litter box or fail to reach it in time.

Do not assume the problem is a urinary-tract infection. Testing is needed to identify the cause and choose treatment.

When peeing is an emergency

Seek immediate veterinary attention if your cat:

  • Repeatedly strains or squats but produces little or no urine
  • Cries while urinating
  • Has blood in the urine
  • Persistently licks the genital area

A urethral blockage is life-threatening, especially in male cats. If you are unsure whether any urine is being produced, treat the situation as urgent.

Urination or spraying? Identify the pattern

What you see More likely explanation
A larger puddle on a horizontal surface, with the cat squatting Urination outside the box. Possible causes include pain, urgency, litter-box aversion, an inaccessible box, surface preference, or stress.
A small amount on a vertical surface, with the cat backing up, raising or quivering its tail Spraying, also called urine marking. Triggers commonly include other cats, household changes, unfamiliar smells, or threats visible through windows and doors.

A spraying cat may still use the litter box normally. In a multi-cat home, use a camera or temporarily separate the cats to establish which one is responsible. Fluorescent dye can help in some cases, but results are inconsistent and it may stain carpet.

Make the litter boxes easier to use

Even a healthy cat may avoid a box that is dirty, cramped, exposed, or guarded by another animal. Reset the setup using these changes:

  1. Provide enough boxes. Use one box per cat, plus one extra. Put them in separate locations; boxes side by side may function as one box from the cat’s perspective.
  2. Place boxes on every floor the cat uses. This is particularly important for older cats and cats that have arthritis or other mobility limitations.
  3. Choose safe locations. A box should be quiet and easy to reach, with more than one possible route away. Do not put it where another pet can corner or block the cat, and keep it away from food and water.
  4. Use a large box. Aim for a box about 1.5 times your cat’s length, measured from the nose to the base of the tail. Many commercial boxes are too small. A low-entry box is better for kittens, elderly cats, and cats with limited mobility.
  5. Start with unscented litter. Soft, unscented, clumping litter is a practical starting point. Cats may dislike scented litter, dust, deodorizers, or liners.
  6. Scoop at least once a day. Wash the box every one to four weeks with soap and hot water. Avoid strong chemicals and ammonia-based products.

Test litter and location preferences

If your cat has a preferred surface or location, use that information rather than fighting it. Put an extra box at the spot the cat repeatedly soils. Once the box is being used reliably, move it a small distance at a time.

For a litter preference test, put different litters in separate boxes rather than mixing them in one box. If the cat prefers a particular texture, continue with that litter. You can also place a small amount of the preferred surface in a box while transitioning.

Clean urine so the cat does not return

Clean accidents promptly with an enzymatic or bacteria-based pet-urine cleaner. A normal household deodorizer may remove the smell for you while leaving odor compounds that remain detectable to your cat. That lingering scent can encourage repeat soiling.

  1. Blot fresh urine instead of spreading it.
  2. Apply a cleaner designed to break down pet urine.
  3. Treat an area substantially larger than the visible spot if urine has soaked into carpet, padding, or upholstery.
  4. Test the product on an inconspicuous area first.
  5. Keep the cat away until the area is dry and the product instructions allow access.

Avoid ammonia-based cleaners because ammonia can smell like urine to a cat. Vinegar is also not a good choice: it may smell like urine and can irritate the cat.

Reduce stress and marking triggers

Think back to what changed before the problem began. Common triggers include:

  • A move, renovation, or new furniture
  • A new person, baby, or pet
  • A changed daily routine
  • Unfamiliar smells brought into the home
  • Conflict between cats
  • An unfamiliar cat visible outside a window or door

Spread essential resources around the home: litter boxes, food, water, resting places, scratching areas, and elevated perches. Cats should not have to compete for them or pass a threatening animal to reach them.

Biokleen Bac Out Enzyme Cleaner, Stain & Pet Odor Eliminator, Lime Scent
  • PLANT BASED CLEANER: Bac-Out uses a plant-based, eco-friendly solution with no artificial fragrances or dyes. Our products never contain phosphates, chlorine, ammonia, or brighteners.
  • MADE IN THE USA: We use biodegradable ingredients, never test on animals, and are manufactured in the USA with US and imported parts

For spraying caused by an outdoor cat, block the view through the window or door where possible. For conflict between household cats, separate the cats and reintroduce them gradually rather than forcing them to share space. Spaying or neutering substantially reduces sexually motivated marking, although it does not prevent every form of spraying.

A synthetic pheromone product may help some cats when marking is stress-related. It is an add-on, not a replacement for veterinary evaluation, better litter boxes, cleaning, or resolving conflict.

What not to do

  • Do not punish the cat. Hitting, yelling, or rubbing a cat’s face in urine increases fear and stress. It may worsen marking and make the cat hide future accidents.
  • Do not call it revenge. House-soiling reflects a medical, environmental, social, or litter-box problem—not a moral decision.
  • Do not give medication without veterinary guidance. Anti-anxiety medication may be useful for some stress-related cases, but it cannot fix an unsuitable box, a preferred surface, or a physical-access problem by itself.
  • Do not assume a self-cleaning box will solve it. Some cats like them; others avoid the noise or moving mechanism.

What to do if the problem continues

If examination and urinalysis rule out medical causes, keep a short record of each incident: time, location, amount, posture, nearby people or animals, and what the cat had been doing. Patterns can reveal whether the issue is linked to a particular box, room, surface, or social trigger.

If improved boxes, thorough cleaning, and stress reduction do not work, ask your veterinarian for a behavioral assessment or referral to a board-certified veterinary behaviorist. In some cases, a veterinarian may recommend temporary confinement to a comfortable, previously clean room containing food, water, resting areas, enrichment, and appealing litter-box choices. This should be supervised and used for as short a period as practical—not as punishment.

FAQ

Why is my cat suddenly peeing in the house?

A sudden change can result from urinary pain or inflammation, kidney disease, diabetes, arthritis, mobility problems, cognitive decline, litter-box aversion, stress, or urine marking. Arrange a veterinary examination and urinalysis first, even if your cat otherwise seems well.

How many litter boxes should I have for my cats?

Provide one box per cat, plus one extra, in separate locations. Put at least one box on every floor the cats use. Boxes next to each other may be perceived as a single box.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I remove cat urine smell so my cat stops returning?

Use an enzymatic or bacteria-based pet-urine cleaner and treat a larger area than the visible stain if urine has soaked into carpet or upholstery. Avoid ammonia and vinegar, which may smell like urine to cats or cause irritation.

Will punishment stop my cat from peeing indoors?

No. Hitting, yelling, or rubbing the cat’s face in urine can increase fear and stress, worsen marking, and make the cat hide future accidents. Find and address the medical, litter-box, environmental, or social cause instead.

The Bottom Line

Start with a vet visit for new or persistent house-soiling, and treat straining with little or no urine as an emergency. Then distinguish spraying from ordinary urination, provide large clean boxes in safe locations, remove odor with a urine-breaking cleaner, and reduce conflict or other stressors. If those steps fail, involve your veterinarian or a veterinary behaviorist rather than punishing the cat.
