The 2025 breeding outcome at the Alfred Cove osprey nest in Melville Bird Sanctuary remains unexplained. A low-impact drone inspection confirmed there were no chicks in the nest, but observers and the Friends of Melville Bird Sanctuary could not determine what happened to the eggs or any possible chicks.
What happened at the Alfred Cove osprey nest?
PerthNow reported on 16 October 2025 that three ospreys had been seen at the sanctuary: an adult pair and a juvenile from the previous year. Observers had seen behaviour suggesting incubation, and on the morning of 29 September, behaviour raised hopes that chicks might have hatched.

That afternoon, the adult female and the juvenile were involved in an altercation. The adult male did not return to the nest that day. According to the Friends’ account, the female remained at the nest and called for him; observers saw no apparent feeding or chick activity, and the juvenile did not reappear. These events were observed in sequence, but the reports do not establish that the altercation caused the nest’s outcome.

The Friends contacted the Western Australian Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) and arranged a low-impact drone inspection. It confirmed there were no chicks in the nest. The footage was shared with DBCA and an osprey observer.

The Friends said suspected shell fragments were inconclusive and that the inspection did not provide clear answers. The published accounts do not establish whether eggs hatched, what happened to any possible chicks, why the female acted as she did, or why the juvenile did not return.
Was 2025 a difficult season for Perth ospreys?
The Friends’ year-end 2025 summary described the season as challenging for ospreys across Perth, based on advice from an experienced osprey observer. The cited account gives no regional census or figures, so it does not show how many nests were affected or establish a regional breeding-failure rate.
