If your dog repeatedly grabs food scraps, trash, rocks, plastic, fabric, or other objects from the ground, prevent access while you arrange veterinary advice. Eating non-food items can be pica, but the behavior may also reflect ordinary scavenging, anxiety, pain, illness, or a learned habit. Choking, intestinal blockage, intestinal injury, dental damage, and poisoning are possible. Use close supervision, leash control, and reward-based leave it and drop it training; never induce vomiting unless a veterinarian or poison-control professional tells you to.
First determine what your dog is actually eating
“Eating everything” can describe two different behaviors. A dog that snatches a dropped sandwich or rummages for edible scraps is scavenging. A dog that repeatedly swallows objects with no nutritional value—such as stones, plastic, cloth, wood, mulch, or string—may have pica. Chewing an object and spitting it out is not the same as ingesting it, although chewing can still damage teeth or expose the dog to toxins.

The description alone cannot establish which pattern your dog has. Note the targets, whether your dog swallows them, how often it happens, and where it occurs. A dog that only searches for food near a picnic area needs a different plan from one that eats rocks in the yard and socks in the house. Repeated non-food ingestion deserves a veterinary assessment because medical and behavioral causes can look alike.
Why ground eating can become an emergency
Risk depends on the item, amount, and your dog’s size and health. An object may lodge in the throat, block the stomach or intestine, cut the digestive tract, or cause a perforation. String, ribbon, thread, and similar linear materials are especially dangerous because they can catch at one point while the intestines bunch or tear around them. Hard objects can fracture teeth. Some foods, medications, chemicals, plants, and unknown substances are poisonous even in small amounts.

Do not assume an item will pass because it looks small, soft, or harmless. A dog’s anatomy and the object’s shape matter more than appearance. Puppies, small dogs, and dogs with previous abdominal surgery may have different risks, so a professional should make the triage decision.
If your dog may have swallowed something, act in this order
- Move the dog away from the source. Keep the dog calm and prevent a second mouthful. If an object is visible at the front of the mouth and can be removed without a struggle, take it away; do not reach deeply or pull on string that is anchored in the mouth.
- Identify the substance. Save packaging, a sample, or a clear photograph if doing so is safe. Record what was eaten, the estimated amount, the time, and your dog’s weight and current symptoms.
- Call promptly. Contact your veterinarian, an emergency veterinary hospital, or an animal poison-control service when the item is unknown, potentially toxic, sharp, string-like, or otherwise hazardous. Do not wait for symptoms before asking for advice.
- Follow professional instructions exactly. Do not give food, oil, salt, medication, or home remedies unless directed. Do not induce vomiting on your own; some substances burn the esophagus or cause greater injury when brought back up.
- Go straight to emergency care for severe signs. Seizures, difficulty breathing, unresponsiveness, unconsciousness, collapse, or bleeding require immediate transport. Repeated vomiting, severe abdominal pain, marked weakness, or a swollen abdomen also warrant urgent veterinary guidance.
ASPCA Poison Control lists (888) 426-4435 as a United States service available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and notes that a consultation fee may apply. This is a US resource; elsewhere, use your local veterinarian or animal poison service. Contact details and fees can change, so confirm them when you call.
Arrange a veterinary workup for repeated non-food eating
Pica is a description of behavior, not a diagnosis. A veterinarian may look for gastrointestinal disease, parasites, nutritional problems, anemia, endocrine disease, pain, medication effects, or other conditions that could drive unusual eating. Anxiety, frustration, compulsive behavior, and insufficient outlets for normal foraging can also contribute. Your dog’s history, physical examination, and any tests your veterinarian considers appropriate determine the next step.

Bring a log of episodes: date and location, object, whether it was swallowed, what happened afterward, meals, stool changes, vomiting, medications, and stressful events. A short video of the behavior can help if it is safe to record. Treatment depends on the cause. It may combine medical care with environmental management, feeding changes, enrichment, and behavior modification. A veterinarian may suggest food-dispensing toys or a diet adjustment for some dogs; make those changes under professional guidance rather than assuming a supplement or new food will cure the problem.
Prevent another grab before training is reliable
Control the walking environment
- Use a secure, well-fitted collar or harness and a leash that gives you enough control to prevent lunging toward hazards.
- Choose cleaner routes and quieter times while you build skills. Cross the street, turn around, or create distance from discarded food, animal feces, dead wildlife, and broken objects.
- Scan several steps ahead and keep the leash short enough for timely guidance without constant tension. Avoid allowing the dog to rehearse successful scavenging.
- Carry high-value treats that your dog can eat quickly. Reward voluntary check-ins and choosing to walk past debris.
- At home, use lidded rubbish bins, close laundry hampers, pick up children’s toys, and keep medications, chemicals, and food scraps inaccessible. Inspect the yard for stones, mulch, mushrooms, and fallen fruit.
Consider a basket muzzle for specific high-risk settings
A properly fitted basket muzzle can prevent a dog from picking up objects while you work on the underlying problem. A basket design should allow panting and drinking, unlike restrictive fabric designs that are unsuitable for extended wear or exercise. Introduce it gradually with rewards: let the dog investigate it, feed treats through the basket, briefly fasten it, and increase wearing time only while the dog remains relaxed. Have a veterinarian or qualified reward-based trainer check fit and usage.
A muzzle is a management barrier, not a treatment for pica. Continue supervision, provide water and shade, and never leave a muzzled dog unattended in a situation where the equipment could catch. If the dog panics, paws at it persistently, or cannot pant normally, remove it and seek professional advice about a safer plan.

Teach a rewarded “leave it” cue
Train when your dog is calm and the object is safe. The goal is for the dog to disengage before reaching the item, not to wrestle something away after swallowing has begun.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Place a boring treat in a closed hand. Let your dog sniff. The instant the dog stops investigating or looks away, mark the choice with a calm word such as “yes,” then give a better treat from your other hand.
- Repeat until your dog reliably turns away from the closed hand. Add the words leave it just before presenting your hand.
- Progress to an uncovered treat on the floor, keeping your foot ready to cover it. Reward looking at you or moving away; do not allow the dog to self-reward by taking the item.
- Practice with safe household objects, then in a quiet outdoor area, and finally around realistic distractions. Increase only one difficulty at a time: distance, movement, smell, or location.
- On walks, say the cue early, reward the head turn, and keep moving. If the dog is already lunging, create distance rather than repeating the cue until it becomes background noise.
Teach a calm “drop it” response
Drop it is for an item already in the mouth. Start with a toy your dog values but is willing to trade.
- Offer the toy, then present a treat at the dog’s nose. When the mouth opens, say drop it, give the treat, and return the toy.
- Repeat so releasing does not always end the game. This reduces the incentive to run away or swallow quickly.
- Gradually practice with less convenient objects, always using a reward more valuable than the item. Keep your voice neutral and your hands away from the dog’s mouth.
- If the dog has a dangerous object, do not chase or punish. Call your veterinarian for immediate instructions, especially for sharp, toxic, or string-like material.
Punishment, shouting, or forcibly prying open the mouth can increase anxiety and make a dog gulp objects to keep them away from you. Reward-based training builds a safer automatic response and preserves your ability to exchange an item in an emergency.

Compare management choices realistically
| Option | What it prevents | What it does not solve | Professional input |
|---|---|---|---|
| Close supervision and route changes | Immediate access to many visible hazards | Underlying medical, emotional, or compulsive drivers | Veterinary assessment is needed for repeated ingestion |
| Leash control and distance | Opportunities to lunge or reach debris | Behavior when supervision ends | A qualified trainer can help with timing and equipment |
| Rewarded leave-it and drop-it | Learned responses to approaching or held objects | Poison risk before the skill is reliable | Reward-based coaching can speed progress |
| Basket muzzle | Physical access to many objects in a defined setting | The cause of pica and the need for supervision | Veterinarian or qualified trainer should advise on fit and conditioning |
Recognize patterns that change the plan
Only edible scraps outdoors
Prioritize route management, early leave-it cues, and reinforcement for walking past food. Ask whether hunger, an irregular feeding schedule, or competition with other dogs is affecting walks, and discuss feeding adjustments with your veterinarian.
Non-food items in several locations
Repeated swallowing of rocks, fabric, plastic, wood, or other non-food material is more concerning for pica. Book a veterinary appointment even if the dog currently appears well, because an underlying problem or a developing obstruction may not be obvious at first.
Episodes linked to stress or confinement
Record triggers such as separation, visitors, loud noises, or frustration. Increase predictable enrichment and ask your veterinarian about a behavior referral. Do not use punishment-based techniques, which can intensify fear and conceal warning signs.

Sudden onset in an adult or senior dog
A new change is a reason to prioritize medical evaluation rather than assuming the dog is simply being mischievous. Report appetite, thirst, weight, stool, vomiting, pain, and medication changes.
Poisoning information in context
ASPCA Poison Control’s 2025 annual toxin summary reported more than 376,000 items involved in calls about pet exposures; it also attributed 16.9% of reported exposures to over-the-counter medications and supplements. These are organization-reported call figures, not a measurement of how common scavenging or poisoning is among all dogs. They illustrate why an unknown pill, supplement, chemical, or discarded food should prompt a call rather than guesswork.
A practical decision rule
- Dog is reaching for an object but has not swallowed it: create distance, use a trained cue, trade for a reward, and remove the hazard.
- Dog swallowed an unknown, toxic, sharp, large, or string-like item: call a veterinarian, emergency clinic, or poison-control service immediately, even without symptoms.
- Dog shows breathing trouble, seizures, collapse, unresponsiveness, unconsciousness, or bleeding: go to an emergency veterinary hospital now.
- Dog repeatedly swallows non-food items: schedule veterinary assessment and begin strict access management and reward-based training.
Until a professional identifies the cause and the training is dependable, treat every successful scavenging episode as a safety failure to prevent—not as disobedience to punish. Restrict access, keep records, and get help early when the dog’s targets are non-food or potentially toxic.
