A dog who ignores a command is not necessarily being stubborn or defiant. The cue may not yet have a clear, consistent meaning, the setting may be harder than the dog’s training prepares them for, or responding may not have paid off reliably. Start again where your dog can succeed, reward the response promptly, and add distractions gradually. If the change is sudden, contact your veterinarian to check for a possible medical cause.
Why does a dog ignore a command?
A cue—a spoken word or signal—gets its meaning from what the dog has learned happens after it. Saying “come” or “sit” does not automatically teach the dog what to do. Nonresponse can reflect a gap in learning or a difficult situation, rather than spite or a bid for dominance.

The cue is unclear or inconsistently used
If you use several words for the same request, repeat a cue without reinforcing the response, or ask for a behavior before teaching it in that setting, your dog may not understand what you mean. Choose one cue and use it consistently while giving the dog a chance to respond.
The surroundings are more distracting
A dog who responds in a quiet room may struggle around people, other dogs, wildlife, or play. Those distractions compete with your request, and the behavior may not yet be practiced in that context. A park recall is especially challenging if coming back ends the fun while ignoring the call lets play continue.

Responding has not been worthwhile
Dogs learn from consequences. If responding rarely earns something the individual dog values, while ignoring the cue lets the dog keep doing something enjoyable, the response may weaken. The reward could be food, a toy, or play; it need not be the same for every dog.
The change is sudden
If your dog has recently stopped responding, particularly alongside another change in behavior, contact a veterinarian for an assessment. A sudden change can have a medical cause, but nonresponse alone does not establish a diagnosis.

How to reset command training
- Choose one cue. Use a short word or signal consistently. Say it once, then give your dog time to respond instead of repeating it or raising your voice.
- Practice where success is likely. Begin indoors or in another quiet, familiar place where your dog can focus. If the response breaks down outside, reduce the distraction or return to an easier setting.
- Reward promptly. As soon as your dog does what you asked, offer something they value, such as a small food reward, play, or a toy. An appealing reward can be especially useful when building an early recall.
- Increase difficulty gradually. Once the response is reliable in an easy setting, practice in new locations and add distractions in manageable steps. If your dog stops responding, make the exercise easier again.
- Make recall worth answering. Sometimes call your dog, reward them, and then let them return to play. That way, coming back does not always predict that an enjoyable activity is over.
- Keep recall positive. Use an upbeat, consistent call. If you have to retrieve your dog after they fail to come, do not punish them afterward; punishment can make future recall less likely.
When is it safe to rely on recall off leash?
Do not rely on off-leash freedom until your dog has shown reliable recall through many repetitions in varied contexts. A response that works at home does not by itself show that it will work around play, wildlife, or other distractions. Continue safe management while you build and assess the behavior.
Which training methods should you use?
The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) recommends reward-based methods for all dog training and behavior modification. Its public position page says its 2021 humane-training position remains its current authoritative position, and a 2025 board clarification reiterates that recommendation. AVSAB advises against aversive methods and tools, including electronic collars, prong collars, choke chains, leash corrections, and physical or psychological punishment. Its position statement says: “Based on current scientific evidence, AVSAB recommends that only reward-based methods are used for all dog training, including the treatment of behavior problems.” — AVSAB Humane Dog Training Position Statement.

Persistent or serious behavior problems may call for more than practicing a cue: management, changes to the environment, and a tailored behavior-modification plan may be needed, sometimes alongside medication under professional guidance. Seek a qualified professional who uses reward-based methods. For a sudden change in response, start with your veterinarian.
