How to Find a 24-Hour Emergency Vet Near You Before You Need One

Before your pet needs urgent care, confirm a nearby emergency hospital’s hours, species capabilities, address, and call-ahead process—and save the details where your household can find them.

Ask your regular veterinarian which emergency hospital serves your area, then call that hospital yourself to confirm its hours, location, after-hours process, and whether it treats your pet’s species. Save the phone number and route somewhere you and other household members can reach quickly. If an emergency happens, call before you leave when possible so the veterinary team can advise you and prepare.

Start with your regular veterinarian

Ask your veterinarian where clients should take pets when the practice is closed and how after-hours referrals work. Check the practice’s voicemail or website for its current instructions, but do not assume a referral or recorded message confirms a hospital’s current hours or ability to treat your pet.

Make a short list of plausible options, including a backup if one is available. There is no single authoritative nationwide directory that establishes which emergency hospital is open and appropriate for every pet today; a map result or a provider’s location count is not proof of local availability.

Call each candidate and verify the details

Use the same questions for every hospital. A direct call is the best way to confirm details that can change with staffing, services, and local conditions.

  • Species: Do you treat my pet’s species? Birds, rabbits, reptiles, pocket pets, and livestock may require specific experience or equipment; do not assume a dog-and-cat emergency clinic can see every animal.
  • Relevant capability: Can you assess the kind of emergency my pet might have, or should I call another facility? Ask about any known species- or service-specific limitations.
  • Call-ahead procedure: Should I phone before setting out, and what information should I have ready?
  • Records and coordination: Can I send or bring medical records, and can you coordinate with my regular veterinarian?

Record the confirmed address, main phone number, and any specific instructions. Recheck periodically because hours, staffing, and services can change.

Save the number and learn the route

Put the hospital’s name, address, and phone number in your phone contacts. Also write them on your pet’s emergency information sheet and leave a copy somewhere household members can find it. Do not rely on a single person’s phone or memory.

Map the route in advance and identify a backup route or facility. A saved map pin is useful, but keep the written address and phone number too.

  • Your pet’s age, approximate weight, species, and any important handling needs.
  • A secure carrier or other appropriate way to contain and transport your pet.

Practice getting your pet into the carrier and taking calm, safe car trips before they are urgent. For an injured animal, minimize movement and confine the pet in a small area during transport. A carrier works for many smaller pets; a board, sled, blanket, or similar support may help move a larger dog. Ask the veterinary team for instructions rather than attempting a procedure you are not trained to perform.

Protect yourself as well as your pet: pain and fear can make an animal react unpredictably. Follow veterinary guidance on safe handling.

If poisoning is possible, call for specific instructions

Contact a veterinarian, emergency hospital, or animal poison-control service promptly if you suspect your pet has been poisoned. Keep the packaging or a clear description of the substance, and note the possible amount and time of exposure. Do not induce vomiting, give medication, or try a home antidote unless a veterinarian or poison-control expert directs you to do so.

When an emergency happens

  1. Call your veterinarian or local emergency hospital. Describe what happened, your pet’s species, and the signs you see. Ask whether to come in and follow the team’s directions. The AVMA advises: “Call your veterinarian or local veterinary hospital so they can be ready for your pet when you arrive.”
  2. Prepare the information and any relevant item. Bring available medical records and medication details. For a possible poisoning, bring the packaging or information about the substance.
  3. Transport your pet as safely as you can. Keep the animal contained and limit unnecessary movement. Do not put yourself at risk handling a frightened or injured pet.

Calling does not replace an examination when one is needed. The FDA notes that an emergency veterinarian may offer advice by phone or recommend that the pet be examined. This guide is for preparation, not diagnosis; first aid is not a substitute for veterinary care.
