The fastest safe answer is not to punish the jump. Prevent jumping from producing attention, then reward a specific alternative—first four paws on the floor, and later a sit or calm wait. Use barriers or a leash during arrivals so your dog cannot keep rehearsing the behavior.
A dog that jumps on people usually is not trying to be rude or dominant. Jumping is often a greeting strategy: because dogs are shorter than people, getting their front feet off the ground brings them closer to a person’s face. The behavior also continues when it produces attention—even attention in the form of talking, pushing, touching, or scolding.

The most reliable approach is to prevent jumping from earning interaction while teaching a replacement greeting, such as four paws on the floor, a sit, a down, or calmly waiting on a mat. Until that behavior is dependable, manage greetings with a leash, gate, crate, pen, mat, or separate room so your dog cannot repeatedly rehearse the unwanted behavior.

Excitement is a common cause, especially when a person arrives home, enters the house, bends down, or speaks enthusiastically. A dog may have learned that jumping makes people look at them, touch them, talk to them, or move away. Even pushing a dog down can become an exciting interaction.

Not every jumping dog is simply enthusiastic. Jumping can also occur alongside anxiety, conflict, or discomfort around approaching people. Look at the dog’s entire body and behavior rather than assuming that a jump means the dog wants to be petted. Stiffness, fixed staring, yawning, lip licking, retreating, barking, lunging, growling, snapping, or other signs of distress call for more distance and a different plan.
The basic training plan: teach “four paws on the floor”
Start with four paws on the floor rather than immediately requiring a sit. A sit can be useful, but it may be difficult for an extremely excited dog. Once your dog can stay grounded during greetings, you can add a sit if that is the behavior you want visitors to receive.
-
Prepare rewards before the greeting begins
Have small, appealing treats ready before the person approaches. The reward needs to arrive while your dog is still successful—not after a long struggle with jumping. A dog training treat pouch can keep rewards immediately available during practice, but the pouch is only a delivery tool; it does not replace training.

Begin somewhere calm
Practice with yourself or a familiar family member in a quiet room. Ask the person to approach only far enough for the dog to remain able to think, take food, and keep all four paws down. If your dog becomes frantic, increase the distance or make the approach less exciting.
-
Mark and reward grounded behavior
As your dog approaches with four paws on the floor, calmly say “yes,” click, or use another consistent marker. Immediately place the treat low, near the dog’s front feet. Feeding low can help keep the dog grounded instead of encouraging them to reach upward.

Remove attention when jumping starts
If the dog jumps, the person should stop talking, touching, and making eye contact. Turn away or calmly step back. Do not push the dog down or wrestle with them. The instant the dog returns to four paws on the floor, resume the greeting and reward again.
-
Increase difficulty one change at a time
When your dog succeeds in the quiet room, gradually extend the greeting, add a little movement, practice near the doorway, and then invite familiar visitors. Change one variable at a time. A dog that can greet one stationary family member may not yet be ready for a person entering quickly with a coat, bag, children, or other distractions.

Make the rule consistent
Everyone in the household and regular visitors should follow the same response. If jumping occasionally earns petting or excited attention, it can become especially persistent because the dog keeps trying in case the next attempt pays off. Ask visitors in advance to follow the greeting procedure.
What should the person do when the dog jumps?
Use the same short sequence every time:
- Stop speaking and touching the dog.
- Turn your body away or calmly step out of reach.
- Wait for four paws to return to the floor.
- Mark and reward the calm behavior.
- Resume the greeting only while the dog remains grounded.
This is not intended to frighten or punish the dog. It simply makes jumping ineffective and makes the replacement behavior worthwhile. If the dog repeatedly jumps, shorten the greeting and make the next approach easier.
A visitor-management plan
Training works best when the dog is not allowed to practice the problem behavior at full intensity. Keep treats near the entrance and use management during the busiest part of the arrival. Depending on the dog and the home, useful options include:

- a mat or “place” behavior where the dog waits;

These are management tools, not cures. Continue teaching the replacement greeting so your dog gradually earns more access to visitors.
Give visitors this script
- Ignore the dog initially—no eye contact, talking, or petting.
- Bring the dog close only while the dog can remain responsive and grounded.
- Reward four paws on the floor, or a sit if the dog has learned one.
- Allow petting only while the dog remains calm.
- If jumping begins, turn away or step back.
- Repeat briefly rather than allowing a long, chaotic greeting.
Children and jumping dogs
An adult should supervise every interaction between a child and an excited dog. Children can learn to turn away from jumping and help reward calm behavior, but they should not be responsible for physically restraining the dog. Use a gate, leash, pen, crate, or separate room whenever an excited dog could knock a child down or make contact with the child’s face.
How to stop jumping on strangers during walks
On a walk, you cannot assume that every stranger will follow your training rules. Until your dog is reliable, it is fine to decline greetings. Move to the side, create distance, and use a previously taught “watch me” cue, toy, or food to redirect your dog while the person passes.
For planned practice, ask a cooperative stranger to follow the same procedure used at home: ignore the dog at first, offer attention only when four paws remain down, and withdraw attention if jumping starts. Keep the interaction short and stop before your dog becomes overexcited.
Do not force a fearful dog to greet people
If your dog is stiff, staring, retreating, barking, lunging, growling, snapping, or otherwise uncomfortable, do not push the dog toward the person as a socialization exercise. Increase distance until the dog can remain comfortable, then pair the sight or presence of people with rewards. A dog that cannot stay below its stress threshold is not ready for a close greeting.

Safety takes priority over manners. Tell people not to approach or pet your dog, use barriers when necessary, and get professional guidance if you are worried that the dog may bite.
Should you teach a sit instead?
Yes, if your dog can perform and hold a sit while excited. A sit gives visitors a clear behavior to request and can make greetings predictable. However, four paws on the floor is a useful first step because it is often easier for an excited dog than maintaining a sit. You can reward grounded behavior first, then begin marking and rewarding a sit once the dog is able to offer it without immediately springing up.
Methods to avoid
Do not rely on yelling, kneeing, hitting, intimidation, leash corrections, shock collars, prong collars, choke chains, or pushing the dog down. These methods can add fear or conflict to an already exciting interaction, suppress warning signals, and damage trust. Negative attention may still function as attention, so it may fail to reduce the jumping while creating additional behavior problems.
A reward-based plan is clearer: calm, grounded behavior makes the greeting continue; jumping makes the interaction pause. Reward-based training is also the appropriate foundation when behavior modification is needed. No single piece of equipment can substitute for teaching and consistently reinforcing the replacement behavior.

How long does it take to stop a dog from jumping?
There is no honest universal timeline. A behavior that has been rewarded repeatedly may take weeks or months to change, depending on the dog, how long jumping has been practiced, the consistency of every person involved, and the difficulty of the situations.

Expect uneven progress. Your dog may greet family members successfully but jump on visitors, or remain grounded in the living room but lose control at the front door. Return to an easier version of the exercise, reward earlier, and increase difficulty more gradually. Preventing occasional full-intensity rehearsals is important because one exciting greeting can temporarily make the behavior stronger.
When to get professional help
Contact a qualified professional if jumping occurs with fear, significant anxiety, lunging, growling, snapping, a bite history, or an inability to remain calm enough to take food and respond to you. Get help promptly if someone could realistically be knocked down or bitten.
A reward-based trainer may be suitable for ordinary greeting manners. A veterinary behaviorist or qualified behavior consultant is more appropriate when fear, anxiety, aggression, or safety concerns are involved. When looking for help, ask exactly which methods and equipment the professional uses; avoid anyone who recommends intimidation or aversive corrections as a general solution. The IAABC consultant directory is one possible starting point for finding a certified dog behavior consultant. The AKC GoodDog Helpline may also be an option for individualized dog-training guidance, subject to current enrollment, location, and terms.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do when my dog jumps on me?
Turn away, stop talking and touching, and calmly step out of reach. The moment the dog returns to four paws on the floor, mark and reward that behavior. Do not push the dog down or turn the interaction into a game.
How do I stop my dog from jumping on guests?
Ask visitors to ignore the dog initially, then reward four paws on the floor or a sit. Use a leash, gate, pen, crate, mat, or separate room to prevent uncontrolled greetings while the behavior is being taught.
Why does my dog jump and bark at strangers?
Do not force the dog to greet. Increase distance and reward calm behavior while the person remains at a comfortable distance. Lunging, growling, snapping, retreating, or fixed staring may indicate fear or reactivity rather than ordinary greeting excitement.
How long does it take to stop a dog from jumping?
There is no fixed timeline. Dogs may improve over weeks or months depending on their history, the consistency of the people involved, and how difficult the practice situations are. Gradual progress is more reliable than rushing into busy greetings.
The Bottom Line
Stop rewarding the jump, but do not punish the dog for it. Prevent chaotic greetings, reward four paws on the floor before the dog launches upward, and increase distractions gradually. Consistency and safety matter more than a quick fix.
