To stop a kitten from biting during play, keep your hands and feet out of the game, redirect bites to a suitable toy, and pause play when the kitten gets rough. Use the same calm response each time and reward gentle play. Biting can be normal play, but a sudden change, apparent pain, or other symptoms calls for a veterinarian’s advice.
First, consider why your kitten is biting
Kittens often bite during play as they practice hunting-like behavior and learn how hard is too hard. That does not automatically mean a kitten is aggressive. But biting alone cannot tell you what is causing it: context, posture, facial expression, vocalization, and whether the behavior is new all matter. Fear, anxiety, pain, drugs, and neurologic disorders can also be associated with increased aggression, according to UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. Don’t try to diagnose the cause from a brief description of the behavior.

1. Keep hands and feet out of play
Don’t wiggle fingers, wrestle with your kitten, or use your hands and feet as toys. That can make skin part of the game. Instead, offer a target that keeps your hands farther away, such as a wand or feather toy on a string. Toy mice, balls rolled along the floor, and rolled paper are other options described by UC Davis. Rotating toys can help keep play interesting.

Choose a toy you can use safely and consistently. The point is to give your kitten something appropriate to chase and grab—not to rely on a particular toy to prevent all biting.

2. Redirect a bite, then pause rough play
If your kitten bites during play, calmly redirect attention to a toy. If the kitten keeps biting or playing roughly, stop the interaction and withdraw your attention. Avoid turning the pause into a chase or another exciting game. Resume when play is calmer, and respond consistently each time.
Daily play and rewarding appropriate, gentle play can help reinforce what you want. Everyone in the household should use the same approach so the kitten gets a clear, predictable response. Supervise young children around kittens.

3. Avoid punishment and reward gentle play
Don’t hit, scruff, tap the kitten’s nose, yell, or use other physical punishment. It can frighten a kitten and may make people—or hands and feet in particular—seem threatening. Instead, praise or reward gentle play and redirect inappropriate bites to a toy.
If rough play persists despite calm, consistent redirection, ask your veterinarian for help. Cornell’s Feline Health Center guidance on aggression notes that a veterinary behaviorist may be appropriate when aggression cannot be managed with suggested techniques.

When biting may need veterinary attention
Contact a veterinarian if biting is persistent, begins or worsens suddenly, seems connected to pain when a particular area is touched, or comes with other medical signs. UC Davis identifies pain and other medical factors among possible causes of increased aggression; a veterinarian can assess your kitten rather than relying on guesswork.
UC Davis also reports that studies found reduced human-directed aggression in kittens handled for 5–40 minutes per day. The page does not identify the original study, so treat this as an institutional summary—not a proven daily prescription or a guarantee that handling alone will prevent biting. Keep handling gentle and stop if your kitten appears distressed.
