Treat the package chart as a starting estimate—not a prescription—and adjust portions with your veterinarian using the puppy’s weight trend and body condition. Keep fresh water available.
1. Gather your puppy’s current feeding and health details
Before changing food or portions, note your puppy’s age, current weight, the food and formula being fed, how much is offered and eaten, and how often treats are given. Also note any appetite changes or health concerns. Ask the veterinarian about medical diets or feeding restrictions; a puppy with a health issue may need an individualized plan.

2. Choose a food that supports growth
Look for a complete and balanced puppy food, or an all-life-stages food whose nutritional adequacy statement covers growth. An adult-maintenance food alone may not provide the nutrient profile needed by a growing puppy. Check the current package for its AAFCO nutritional adequacy statement: a food may be substantiated through feeding tests or formulated to meet nutrient profiles. These are different routes for substantiating adequacy, not a guarantee that one particular food is right for every puppy.

Small kibble may be easier for a toy-sized puppy to pick up and chew. Watch your Yorkie eat: jaw size and teeth change during growth, and a texture that works now may become less suitable later. If chewing seems difficult, ask the veterinarian about an appropriate texture or size rather than assuming the puppy is simply fussy.

4. Use the food’s chart only to set an initial ration
Start with the feeding guide for the specific food, taking account of the puppy’s age and the chart’s other inputs, such as anticipated adult size. Do not treat a chart as a universal Yorkie requirement: formulas differ, and puppies vary in energy needs. VCA notes that label amounts can overestimate what an individual pet needs.
A 2017 study of 22 Yorkshire Terrier puppies from eight litters, followed from 10 to 52 weeks of age, found that the NRC puppy energy equation overestimated energy needs for that study population between 10 and 20 weeks. It does not establish a fixed calorie target or a single ration for all Yorkies; it is a reason not to treat a general equation as an individual prescription.

5. Measure the day’s food
Weigh the puppy’s full daily ration in grams with a digital kitchen scale when possible, then allocate that measured amount across meals and training rewards. A measuring cup is less precise, and small differences can matter for a small dog. The VCA guidance on toy and small dogs recommends accurate measurement and notes that even small overfeeding can have an impact.

6. Divide the ration into frequent, small meals
Young puppies generally do better with multiple small meals rather than one or two large servings. Guidance differs somewhat on when to reduce meal frequency, and very small puppies or puppies with health concerns may need a veterinarian’s individualized schedule.

Keep clean, fresh water accessible throughout the day, as advised by VCA and the Yorkie breed guidance.
7. Keep treats and extras controlled
Count treats as part of the day’s intake. Merck’s general guidance is to keep treats that are not complete and balanced below 10% of total daily calories. For a small puppy, even a few extras can add up; using some of the measured kibble ration as training rewards helps keep intake predictable.

Avoid adding supplements or home-prepared foods as a substitute for a balanced growth diet unless the veterinarian recommends it. Supplements may be unnecessary or harmful when a puppy is already eating an appropriate complete diet. See Merck’s feeding-practices guidance for treat and supplement cautions.
8. Track weight and body condition
Record weight regularly—Merck recommends weekly monitoring during growth—and review the trend with your veterinarian. The goal is steady, appropriate growth, not simply reaching a number on a chart. Your veterinarian can assess body condition alongside weight and help determine whether the ration is supporting gradual gain.

9. Adjust portions based on the puppy, not one meal
If your Yorkie is gaining too quickly, not gaining as expected, or consistently leaving food, revisit the measured ration and the puppy’s health with the veterinarian. Do not make a large change in response to one uneaten meal or rely on a generic calorie equation as a definitive answer. Merck describes daily feeding recommendations as estimates that should be modified through continued evaluation of weight and condition, coat, performance, and general attitude.
10. Keep feeding a growth diet until skeletal maturity
Published guidance gives different general age estimates, so do not switch to adult food solely because your puppy reaches a particular birthday. VCA estimates skeletal maturity at six to nine months for toy breeds and eight to ten months for small dogs; Merck gives a broader eight-to-twelve-month range for small and medium breeds; AAHA says growth-appropriate diets typically continue until approximately one year for small and medium dogs. These are general estimates, not a precise Yorkie transition date.
Continue a complete and balanced growth diet until skeletal maturity and ask the veterinarian when your individual puppy has reached it. The sources are VCA, the Merck Veterinary Manual, and AAHA’s age-specific and breed-specific diet guidance.

Seek veterinary advice if your puppy is ill, unusually weak, or not eating. Those signs need assessment rather than a home feeding adjustment or an improvised treatment plan. Bring your feeding notes and weight records so the veterinarian can consider the whole pattern.
