To stop a cat from “fur mowing”—licking or chewing its coat until hair breaks off or skin is damaged—find and treat the cause rather than trying to suppress the licking. Parasites, allergies, skin problems, pain and other illnesses can all be involved. Stress-related overgrooming is a possibility, but it should be considered only after a veterinarian has assessed medical causes.
1. Recognize when grooming has become a problem
Grooming is normal cat behavior. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine notes that cats may spend 30% to 50% of their waking time grooming; that figure is not a threshold for diagnosing a problem. The concern is what the grooming is doing: hair loss, damaged or inflamed skin, or excessive hairballs can signal overgrooming. If the skin is being injured, do not wait for a large bald patch before seeking veterinary advice.
As Cornell veterinary dermatologist William Miller, Jr., puts it, “The solution to ‘fur mowing’ is to identify the underlying cause and correct it.” Cornell’s overview of feline overgrooming explains why addressing the cause matters.
2. Note the pattern and check for skin changes
Before the appointment, write down where the fur is thinning, when you notice licking, and any recent changes in the home. Note other signs too: redness, swelling, sores, scabs, scaling, bumps, or changes in appetite or activity. These observations help your veterinarian investigate; they do not establish a diagnosis.

The location can offer clues. Licking near the tail base may occur with fleas, while allergy-related licking may involve the back or abdomen. But causes overlap, so a pattern alone cannot tell you what is wrong. Cornell advises owners that they can check for fleas, lice, and fur mats, but that a veterinarian should investigate beyond those basic checks.
3. Ask a veterinarian to investigate medical causes
Arrange a veterinary assessment rather than assuming the behavior is boredom or anxiety. Excessive licking can be associated with parasites or flea sensitivity, other allergies, skin infection or disease, pain, and other illness. The vet may need your cat’s history, a physical examination, and appropriate tests or treatment trials to identify the cause.

In particular, do not label fur mowing “psychological” before medical problems have been assessed. A veterinarian’s findings guide whether the next step is parasite control, allergy or skin treatment, an evaluation for pain, or another medical investigation. VCA’s guide to overgrooming in cats also describes medical causes that can contribute to the behavior.
4. Follow the treatment plan and protect injured skin
Use the treatment your veterinarian recommends for the cause identified. If licking has broken the skin, contact the clinic promptly: damaged skin can become infected, and infection may add itch and worsen the licking cycle. Do not apply medications or other products unless your veterinarian says they are suitable for your cat.

Do not give laxatives or start a commercial hairball diet to address fur mowing without veterinary approval and supervision. Daily brushing or combing can reduce loose hair and may help minimize hairballs, but it does not treat the cause of excessive licking.

If your veterinarian has ruled out medical problems or is treating them and stress remains a concern, make the home predictable and give your cat safe ways to rest and stay engaged. Cornell veterinarian Pamela Perry suggests daily play of ten to fifteen minutes as one way to provide stimulation. Adapt play to your cat’s age, health, and preferences.

- Keep feeding, play, and other routines as consistent as practical.
- Introduce household changes gradually when possible.
- Offer a quiet retreat and safe elevated spaces.
- Make time for interactive play each day.
If the licking continues or is severe, ask the veterinarian about further behavioral support. Medication is a veterinary decision, not a do-it-yourself remedy. Perry notes that overgrooming is normally treated as stress-related only after medical problems have been ruled out.
