The fastest safe approach is management first: stay with your puppy during potty trips, remove stool immediately, prevent access to other animals’ waste, and reward a behavior such as turning away or coming to you. Do not punish or use a deterrent supplement as a guaranteed cure.
Call your veterinarian if the behavior starts suddenly, becomes frequent or compulsive, or occurs with weight loss, vomiting, diarrhea, appetite changes, soft or poorly digested stool, or any other sign that your puppy is unwell.

Why is my puppy eating poop?
Young dogs investigate with their mouths. A puppy may sample fresh stool because of normal exploration, scavenging, imitation of the mother, attention-seeking, boredom, stress, hunger, or simply because the opportunity is there. Some puppies are also attracted to the smell or texture of poorly digested feces. These explanations can overlap, and the behavior alone cannot diagnose a nutritional deficiency or disease. The VCA discussion of coprophagia recommends considering both behavioral and medical causes.

Prevalence estimates vary by survey. VCA reports that 16% of dogs are serious stool eaters and 23% have eaten feces at least once, citing Hart and colleagues’ 2018 study as reported on its page reviewed in 2026: VCA’s puppy guidance. The American Kennel Club describes two surveys of about 3,000 owners, reporting 16% as serious stool eaters and 24% having eaten stool at least once: AKC’s overview. The figures are close but not identical, so they should not be merged into one estimate.

When a medical cause is more plausible
A sudden change, very frequent eating, or a puppy that seems driven to search for feces deserves more attention than an occasional exploratory grab. Parasites, gastrointestinal disease, exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, malabsorption, an inadequate food intake, and some medications can contribute. Warning signs include weight loss, vomiting, diarrhea, unusual hunger or appetite loss, lethargy, abdominal discomfort, and stool that is persistently soft or contains visible undigested food. Banfield lists sudden or frequent coprophagia and changes such as weight loss, vomiting, diarrhea, or appetite changes as reasons to seek veterinary advice: Banfield’s veterinary guide.
Is eating poop dangerous?
Eating a puppy’s own stool is not generally dangerous, but it is not a guarantee of safety. Stool from another dog can contain parasites or infectious material, and feces from other animals may carry parasites, viruses, or toxins. Cat litter and feces are therefore worth treating as off-limits. VCA and AKC both distinguish the usually lower risk of a puppy’s own stool from the added hazards of other animals’ waste: VCA and AKC.
11 tips to stop a puppy from eating poop
1. Pick up stool immediately
Opportunity is the strongest short-term reinforcer. Carry waste bags on every potty trip, watch for the bowel movement, and remove it as soon as your puppy finishes. In a yard, check the whole area before letting the puppy play. Prompt cleanup prevents rehearsal of the behavior and reduces exposure to parasites and pathogens. A bag dispenser attached to the leash can make the routine easier, but the essential tool is immediate removal.

2. Stay with your puppy outside
Do not send a young puppy into the yard alone while this habit is active. Keep the puppy on a leash or within arm’s reach, especially during the minutes immediately after elimination. On walks, scan the route ahead and steer around piles before your puppy reaches them. Supervision lets you interrupt calmly and reward the alternative instead of chasing after a successful grab.
3. Block access to other animals’ waste
Use a secure lid or a closed room for cat litter boxes, and clean litter promptly. Keep the puppy away from kennels, dog parks, communal grass, and livestock areas where unknown feces may be present until the habit is under control. Ask household members to follow the same cleanup rule. If another animal’s stool is on a route, cross the street, shorten the leash, or choose a cleaner path.
4. Teach “leave it” with low-distraction practice
Build the cue before using it around feces. The San Francisco SPCA behavior handout recommends reward-based leave-it work and management.

- Place a boring, safe piece of food in a closed hand. When your puppy stops investigating, mark the instant of disengagement with a calm “yes” and reward from your other hand.
- Progress to an uncovered treat, then a treat on the floor covered by your hand or foot. Reward the puppy for looking back at you, not for grabbing the item.
- Add the words “leave it” just before the puppy turns away, and gradually practice with more distance and mild distractions.
- When your puppy notices stool outdoors, say the cue once, move away if necessary, and pay generously for turning toward you. Never force the puppy’s nose toward the feces.
5. Build a reliable recall
“Come” gives you a practical escape route when the puppy spots waste. Indoors, call from a few steps away in a cheerful voice and deliver several small treats or a favorite toy when the puppy reaches you. Increase distance and distractions gradually; do not call only to end fun or to scold. Outside, use a long line in a safe area until the response is dependable. VCA and the SPCA both recommend calling the dog away and rewarding the return: VCA and SPCA.
6. Reward immediately after pottying
Have treats ready before the puppy squats. The instant the puppy finishes, call them to your side, ask for an easy behavior such as a sit, and reward. Then move the puppy away while you clean up. This creates a predictable chain: eliminate, return to the owner, earn a reward, and continue the walk or play. VCA’s behavior authors describe this timing as a way to make coming and sitting for a special treat a lasting habit: “If the dog is taught to come to the owners and sit for a special food treat immediately following elimination, the new behavior may become a permanent habit.”
7. Practice “drop it” for an attempted grab
If your puppy already has stool in its mouth, stay calm and present a high-value treat or toy. When the puppy opens its mouth, say “drop it,” reward the release, and guide the puppy away while you remove the feces. Practice the cue daily with harmless toys so it is fluent before an emergency. Do not pry open the jaws or chase; both actions can turn the event into a game and may encourage swallowing.

8. Keep your reaction calm and skip punishment
Shouting, grabbing, or dramatic attention can add anxiety, create a chase game, or accidentally reward the behavior with intense interaction. Punishment can also teach a puppy to hide when it eliminates, making cleanup and house-training harder. Debra Horwitz, DVM, DACVB, and Gary Landsberg, DVM, DACVB, DECAWBM, warn on VCA that “The owner that uses the outmoded, inhumane and useless training technique of ‘sticking the dog’s nose’ in its stool when it has soiled the home, may be further encouraging coprophagia.” Clean up without commentary, then reinforce the next correct choice.
9. Review food, stool, and health with your veterinarian
Do not assume poop eating proves a vitamin or mineral deficiency. Instead, record what your puppy eats, how much, stool frequency, stool consistency, appetite, weight trend, medications, and when the behavior occurs. Bring a fresh stool sample if your clinic requests one. VCA advises a physical examination, review of diet and stool quality, and at least fecal parasite testing when investigating medical contributors; soft or poorly digested stool may justify additional tests. Your veterinarian can decide whether the diet amount, digestion, parasites, pancreas, or another illness needs evaluation.
10. Add appropriate activity and enrichment
Boredom and under-stimulation can make scavenging more likely, although enrichment is supportive management rather than a proven cure. Use age-appropriate walks, short training sessions, play, sniffing opportunities, puzzle feeders, and supervised work-to-eat toys. Rotate activities so they stay interesting and choose equipment the puppy cannot shred or swallow. More exercise is not a substitute for supervision: a tired puppy can still eat stool if feces remain available.

11. Treat deterrent products as uncertain
Commercial stool-taste additives have the weakest support among the approaches described by veterinary and behavior sources. VCA notes that products may help only a small percentage of dogs, while the San Francisco SPCA states that it found no studies backing commercial taste deterrents as a successful cure: VCA and SPCA. Ask your veterinarian before giving any product to a young puppy, especially if there are symptoms or other animals in the home. Never use a supplement to replace access control, cleanup, diagnosis, or reward-based training.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A simple daily plan
- Prepare bags, treats, and a leash before opening the door.
- Accompany the puppy to the toilet area and watch the entire elimination.
- Call the puppy to you as soon as they finish, ask for a sit or hand touch, and reward immediately.
- Move the puppy behind a gate, into the house, or onto a clean patch while you pick up the stool.
- On walks, scan ahead, use “leave it” before the puppy reaches waste, and reward every turn-away.
- Write down episodes and any changes in stool, appetite, weight, vomiting, or diarrhea.
Consistency matters because every successful meal of feces can strengthen the habit. If another adult handles the puppy, demonstrate the same sequence so the cue, reward, and cleanup timing do not vary.
When to call the veterinarian
Arrange an appointment for sudden onset, persistent or compulsive coprophagia, repeated ingestion of other animals’ stool, or any illness sign. Seek prompt advice for weight loss, vomiting, diarrhea, appetite change, lethargy, abdominal discomfort, or unusually soft or poorly digested feces. A clinic may perform a physical examination and fecal parasite testing first, then recommend further evaluation based on the history and stool findings. Bring details about diet, feeding amount, medications, access to litter or wildlife feces, and the frequency of episodes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat progress should look like
Improvement is measured by fewer opportunities and more successful turn-aways, not by expecting a supplement to switch the behavior off overnight. Keep supervising until your puppy reliably returns after elimination and responds to “leave it” around mild distractions. If accidents continue despite careful management, or the behavior worsens, revisit the veterinary evaluation and consider help from a qualified, reward-based trainer who can observe the routine.
