These three methods follow U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) consumer guidance. They prevent avoidable contamination, preserve the information needed for a recall, and reduce the chance that a cat can reach and overeat its food.

1. Keep dry cat food in its original bag
For kibble, the original package is the best primary storage system. Fold the top of the bag tightly after each use and keep it in a cool, dry location below 80°F. FDA says excess heat or moisture may cause nutrients to break down; the 80°F figure is a storage-quality threshold, not a claim that food becomes immediately unsafe when a room briefly exceeds it. Keep the bag away from damp floors, sinks, steam, radiators, ovens, direct sunlight, and other heat sources.

The package also preserves the product name, UPC, lot number, manufacturer, and best-by date. Those details matter if a defect or recall is announced. FDA reports that less than half of pet-food complaints it receives include a lot number, even though the number helps identify when and where food was made. Lauren Carey, a veterinarian and pet-food expert at FDA, explains: “When you file a complaint about a pet food, the lot number and ‘best by’ date, along with the full product name, are important for you to provide.” See the FDA guidance at Proper Storage of Pet Food & Treats.

Make the folded-bag method work day to day
- Check that the bag is intact before opening. Do not use food from packaging that is torn, leaking, wet, or otherwise damaged.
- After scooping, press excess air from the upper part of the bag and fold or clip it closed.
- Place the closed bag on a dry shelf or another clean surface in a location your cat cannot open or reach.
- Keep the best-by date and lot number readable until the bag is empty. Do not discard the label before the food is gone.
- Use a clean scoop, spoon, or measuring cup rather than the cat’s bowl as the measuring utensil. Wash the utensil with soap and hot water after each use, then let it dry.
Keeping the bag closed limits exposure to household moisture and debris while leaving the manufacturer’s identification attached. A sealed bag inside a cupboard or lidded cabinet also helps prevent a cat from helping itself to an excessive amount.
2. Refrigerate opened wet food promptly
Canned and pouched food needs a different routine once opened. Put unused portions in the refrigerator promptly, cover them tightly, and keep the refrigerator at 40°F or below. If you cannot refrigerate the leftovers promptly or cannot keep them covered and cold, throw them out instead. FDA gives this advice for opened wet food in both its storage guidance and its safe-handling tips.
The cited FDA pages do not establish one universal number of days for opened cat food. Product formulas, packaging, and handling differ, so follow the label’s instructions or ask the manufacturer for a product-specific duration. Do not turn a general internet rule into a guarantee for every can or pouch.

A practical opened-can or pouch routine
- Open only the amount you expect to serve, when possible.
- Transfer the unused portion to a clean, food-safe container or cover the opened can or pouch tightly.
- Mark or retain the product information so you can identify what is refrigerated. Keep the original can or pouch and its label until the food has been used.
- Refrigerate the covered food at 40°F or below as soon as possible.
- Use the product label or the manufacturer’s advice to decide how long that particular food may remain refrigerated. Discard it when that guidance says to do so.
Do not leave an opened container exposed in the refrigerator. A tight cover protects the food from contact with other items and helps contain odor. Wash the serving bowl after each meal rather than returning leftovers from the bowl to the storage container; the bowl has been in contact with saliva and the surrounding environment.
When to stop using wet food
Discard food that smells foul or appears abnormal. Do not use a can or pouch that is swollen or leaking. If your cat becomes ill after eating a product, stop feeding it and contact a veterinarian. FDA also encourages reporting the complaint to FDA and the manufacturer; the product name, lot number, best-by date, and package information make that report more useful.
3. Build a clean, traceable storage setup
The third method is the system around the food: any secondary bin, scoop, bowl, label, and storage location must stay clean, dry, identifiable, and inaccessible to a cat. This is especially important when a household prefers a storage container for convenience.

Choose the safest dry-food format for your home
FDA prefers that you retain the original bag. If you want a bin, its best use is to hold the entire unopened or partly used bag rather than replacing the packaging. That keeps the food in its original material while adding a barrier against curious pets and accidental spills.

A separate container does not make the food safer or fresher by itself. If you pour kibble out of its bag, use a container that is clean and completely dry, with a snug-fitting lid. Before refilling it with a new bag, wash it thoroughly and let it dry. FDA explains that this removes residual fat and crumbs left on the container’s surfaces.
Preserve the label when you transfer food
- Before discarding or storing the empty package, record the product name, UPC, manufacturer, lot number, and best-by date.
- Tape the label or a clearly written record to the container holding that bag’s kibble.
- When you open a new bag, replace the old information rather than mixing records from two batches.
- Keep the record until the food is finished and any possible reaction or recall window has passed.
Do not mix a new bag into old kibble without first emptying, washing, and drying the container. Mixing makes it harder to identify which lot was being fed if a problem is reported and leaves old crumbs and oils underneath the new food.

Wash the tools that touch food
Wash and dry bowls and dedicated scooping or measuring utensils after each use. FDA’s safe-handling guidance recommends a clean scoop, spoon, or cup—not the pet’s bowl—for measuring. Soap and hot water remove residue that a dry wipe leaves behind. Wash your hands after handling pet food, particularly before preparing human food, and keep the storage scoop from resting on dirty counters or floors.
Use separate, clean equipment for wet food and dry food when practical. Whatever the setup, never put a used serving spoon back into the storage container. Clean the utensil first, and make sure it is dry before it contacts kibble.

Choose a storage spot a cat cannot open, knock over, or climb into. A snug lid helps contain kibble, but the location still matters: a determined cat may push a light container off a shelf or chew through a bag left on the floor. Store food away from cleaning chemicals and places where water can splash. If a spill occurs, remove the exposed food, clean the surface, and return only dry, intact food to storage.

What to do when storage goes wrong
The bag or container became damp
Moisture is a reason to stop and inspect the food rather than sealing it and hoping it dries. Move the unaffected, dry portion only if you can clearly separate it from damp or contaminated material; otherwise discard it. Clean and dry the storage area and container before using a fresh bag. FDA’s under-80°F, low-moisture recommendation is intended to protect storage quality.
You lost the lot number or best-by date
Do not guess. Check the original package, a photograph, or the retailer’s record if you have one. For future bags, keep the package or tape its identifying panel to the bin. The lot number, full product name, manufacturer, UPC, and best-by date are the details FDA identifies as useful for a complaint or recall.
The refrigerator is warmer than 40°F
Move the covered food to a refrigerator that can maintain 40°F or below. Because FDA does not provide a universal opened-food duration on these pages, ask the manufacturer how to handle food that was held above the recommended temperature, and discard it when in doubt rather than extending its use.
Your cat ate from the storage container
Secure the container and monitor the cat. Preventing access is important because an open supply can lead to overeating and leaves the remaining food exposed. If the cat becomes ill, stop using the product and contact a veterinarian; retain the package and lot information for a report.
