To compare dog insurance, look beyond the premium and headline vet-fee limit. Check how long each policy can cover a condition, whether inner limits apply, what you would pay towards a claim, and what the policy excludes. The right choice depends on your dog’s needs and the amount you could afford to pay yourself.
Compare the policy type first
Policy type determines whether cover for an eligible illness or injury can continue over time. The names below describe common structures; the exact limits and renewal rules depend on the policy wording. The Association of British Insurers (ABI) explains the main types in its pet insurance guidance.
- Lifetime: Eligible ongoing-condition claims may continue at renewal, subject to the policy’s limits and terms.
- Maximum benefit: The insurer pays up to a monetary limit for a condition. Once that limit is used, further treatment for it is no longer covered.
- Time limited: Cover for a condition is restricted to a specified period, as well as any monetary limits.
- Accident only: Covers eligible accidents, not illness.
Lifetime cover is not unlimited: check whether the allowance renews each year, what counts as a separate condition, and whether any exclusions or sub-limits apply. A policy with a lower premium may offer a shorter claim window or less cover for a continuing condition. Which? also explains these policy types and excesses in its pet insurance guide; its preference for lifetime cover is an editorial recommendation, not a rule that suits every owner.
Check the limits behind the headline figure
A large annual vet-fee limit does not necessarily mean that amount is available for every condition or treatment. Read the schedule and wording for the full structure of the cover.

#1 Best Overall
- Total vet-fee limit: Is it per policy year, per condition, or for the policy’s lifetime?
- Condition limits: Is there a separate cap for each illness or injury?
- Treatment sub-limits: Are particular treatments, services, or fees capped below the headline amount?
- Renewal: Does the limit reset at renewal, and can eligible ongoing claims continue under the renewed policy?
Compare equivalent limits across quotes. A policy’s headline amount is only useful if you know which claims it applies to and when it becomes available again.
Work out what an excess and co-payment could cost
An excess is the part of an eligible claim that you must pay. A policy may also require a percentage co-payment, meaning you pay a stated share of eligible costs. Some policies use one or both; the calculation and how often charges apply vary. MoneyHelper explains how co-insurance can add to the policyholder’s share of a bill in its pet insurance guidance.

Illustrative calculation
Suppose an eligible claim is £1,000, the fixed excess is £100, and a 10% co-payment applies to the remaining £900. The excess leaves £900; 10% of that is £90. Your contribution would therefore be £190, before any policy limits or exclusions. This is an example, not a standard insurer calculation: check the policy’s calculation order.
Questions to check in the wording
- Is the excess charged per condition, per claim, or per policy year?
- Does the percentage co-payment apply before or after the fixed excess?
- Does the excess or co-payment change when your dog reaches a stated age?
- Do separate treatments or recurring claims trigger another contribution?
These details can make a substantial difference on a costly claim, so compare the amount you might pay yourself as well as the premium.
Read exclusions and account for your dog’s history
The ABI says most pet insurance policies do not cover pre-existing conditions. An insurer may also set policy-specific exclusions or limits, so check how the terms treat your dog’s medical and treatment history before buying or switching.
Ask the insurer to clarify any exclusion you do not understand and check that the policy covers the types of treatment you expect to need. Routine or elective care may be excluded or treated differently; rely on the specific policy wording rather than assuming it is included.

Check liability, claims and renewal arrangements
Third-party liability
Some dog policies include third-party liability cover and others make it optional; terms and limits vary. Check whether it is included, what the limit is, and what exclusions apply. Which?’s dog insurance guide highlights liability cover as a comparison point.
How claims are paid
Confirm whether you must pay the vet first and claim reimbursement, or whether the insurer can pay the vet directly. Do not assume direct payment is available: check the process for the particular policy and whether the vet must agree.

Renewal and continuity
Find out what you must do to renew and what happens if cover lapses or you change insurer. Since a condition’s claim eligibility can depend on the policy’s continuity and terms, consider how a switch or break in cover could affect ongoing treatment before making a change.

Compare policies using the same dog details and the cover you actually want. Premiums depend on factors including policy type, age, health, claims or treatment history, location, breed and sex, according to the ABI. A quote is meaningful only alongside its cover and your likely contribution to a claim.
- Cover type: Identify whether the policy is lifetime, maximum benefit, time limited or accident only, and whether illness is covered.
- Vet-fee limits: Record the annual total, any per-condition or treatment caps, and whether limits reset.
- Continuity: Check whether eligible ongoing conditions can be claimed at renewal, subject to the terms.
- Excess and co-payment: Note the fixed amount, percentage, calculation order and frequency of application.
- Age rules: Check whether contributions change when your dog reaches a stated age.
- Exclusions: Review pre-existing conditions, routine or elective care, and all policy-specific exclusions.
- Liability: Confirm whether third-party liability is included or optional and note its limit.
- Claims process: Confirm whether you pay the vet first or direct payment may be available.
- Renewal: Check renewal requirements and the effect of a lapse or insurer change on continuing conditions.
- Premium: Compare the quote for your dog, location and selected cover against the out-of-pocket amount you could face on a claim.
Premiums, limits and policy terms can vary by dog and change over time. Use the current schedule and wording for the specific quote, rather than relying on a general comparison or an old policy description.
