To teach gentler behavior, calmly redirect teeth to a suitable toy and briefly pause attention or play whenever teeth touch a person or clothing. Have everyone in the household respond consistently, avoid hand-biting games, and use reward-based training. If the behavior seems fearful or aggressive, causes injury, or remains hard to manage, contact a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional.
Why puppies mouth and bite
Puppies commonly use their mouths during exploration, play, and development. The behavior can be frustrating or painful, but mouthing by itself does not establish that a puppy is aggressive. The immediate training goal is to teach the puppy to direct chewing and play toward appropriate objects rather than people or their clothes.

Teething may be especially relevant at 12–16 weeks, according to PetMD’s guide, updated March 6, 2026. That is guidance about a developmental stage, not a deadline by which every puppy will stop mouthing.

What to do when your puppy mouths you
- Keep a toy within reach. Before play, have a suitable chew or tug toy ready. Choose one that fits your puppy’s size and chewing behavior, and supervise its use.
- Redirect calmly. If mouthing starts, offer the toy and move the play onto it. Avoid turning the moment into an exciting hand game.
- Pause when teeth touch skin or clothing. Briefly stop attention or play. When your puppy is calmer, resume with an appropriate toy. This is a practical way to apply the guidance from PetMD and the American Kennel Club; it is not a guaranteed protocol or timeline.
- Repeat the same response. Make the consequence predictable: people stop being play targets, while toys remain available for play.
Make play rules consistent
Everyone who interacts with the puppy should follow the same approach. Do not invite grabbing hands, skin, or clothing, even as a game. The RSPCA advises using toys for games with dogs that mouth, warning that rough-and-tumble play without toys may encourage them to use clothing or body parts as targets. Use reward-based training, not punishment
Reward calm interactions and appropriate play rather than using physical corrections, intimidation, or aversive tools. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior recommends reward-based methods for all dog training, including behavior problems, and advises against aversive methods. Its position statements and public handouts include its current humane-training position.
When to get professional help
Contact a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional if the biting seems fearful or aggressive, causes an injury, or is difficult to manage despite consistent responses. A professional can assess the individual puppy; general training advice cannot diagnose the cause of a particular dog’s behavior. ASPCA offers guidance on puppy mouthing, nipping, and play biting.
