Build the exercise in small steps: make the door movement and time apart harder gradually, and release your dog with a consistent cue. If your dog follows or struggles, make the next repetition easier rather than turning it into a test of endurance.
Choose a wait or stay cue
Either cue can work, but use it consistently and teach your dog how the exercise ends. The American Kennel Club describes wait as holding until given permission to move forward, while stay means maintaining a particular position until released. A wait cue suits a dog who can comfortably stand, sit, or lie down outside the bathroom. Choose stay if you want your dog to hold a specific sit or down. A fixed position is not necessary if your goal is simply to keep your dog outside the doorway.
Use a clear release word, such as “okay,” so your dog learns not to cross the threshold until released. Reward the behavior you want: remaining calmly on the outside. Small treats can help, but calm attention or the opportunity to move may also be rewarding. The AKC’s guidance on waiting at a door explains the permission cue; its stay guidance covers holding a position and releasing.
Practice the bathroom wait in small steps
- Set up for an easy success. Choose a quiet moment when your dog is settled. Have a few small treats ready and decide on your cue and release word.
- Reward your dog outside the threshold. Ask for a familiar sit or down if you want a particular position, or use your wait cue. Reward your dog for remaining on their side of the doorway while you move toward it or touch the door.
- Make a tiny door movement. Move the door just a little, or briefly step out of sight and return. Keep the first attempts very short. Reward calm waiting before your dog gets up or becomes worried.
- Release deliberately. Give your release cue, then invite your dog to move. This makes the end of the wait clear instead of leaving your dog to guess when it is okay to follow.
- Repeat and adjust. As your dog stays relaxed, gradually increase the time out of sight or how far the door closes. If your dog follows or shows distress, calmly reset and make the next attempt easier by shortening the interval, opening the door more, or staying visible.
Keep practice short and stop while your dog is still succeeding. The ASPCA’s separation-anxiety guidance recommends keeping absences shorter than the time it takes a dog to become upset. Its example of starting with one to two seconds comes from a graduated-departure protocol, not a universal timetable for bathroom practice.

Increase only one challenge at a time
Training difficulty can be thought of in three parts: duration, distance, and distraction. Start with a very short wait, stay close, and practice in a quiet setting. When you make one part harder—such as being out of sight longer—keep the others easy. Once your dog handles the separate challenges, you can combine them gradually. The AKC’s overview of the three Ds explains this progression.
For the bathroom exercise, a practical sequence is to first reward your dog while you approach the doorway, then while the door moves, then for a brief moment out of sight, and finally for slightly longer moments. There is no established bathroom-specific schedule that suits every dog, so let your dog’s calm behavior guide the pace.

If your dog follows, paws, or breaks position
If your dog gets up, do not punish them or keep making the exercise harder. Make the next repetition easier and reward the moment they manage to stay. A door opening after barking or jumping can reinforce those actions; VCA explains how the behavior immediately before a door opens can be rewarded in its guidance on predictable rewards. For bathroom practice, aim to open or release after calm waiting rather than in response to pawing or rushing.
An indoor pet gate can temporarily block access to the doorway when you cannot supervise, but it manages the situation; it does not teach the wait cue by itself. The AKC’s indoor boundary-training guidance discusses gates and other ways to manage boundaries while training. If you use a leash during practice, supervise your dog and do not leave them tethered unattended.

Know when distress may be more than a training gap
Some dogs are excited to follow; others become distressed when separated from a person. VCA lists pacing, salivation, and barking among possible signs of separation-related distress when a dog is alone, but following someone to the bathroom by itself does not establish a diagnosis. Watch how your dog responds: if the separation brings persistent or intense distress, do not try to solve it by repeatedly closing the door for longer periods.
Make practice gentler and consider asking your veterinarian or a qualified behavior professional for help. The ASPCA recommends consulting a Certified Professional Dog Trainer for assistance with separation-anxiety concerns. Its guidance and VCA’s overview of separation anxiety in dogs discuss support for dogs that struggle when people go out of sight.
