Marks can appear days after the bite, and some people develop no visible reaction. To know whether bed bugs are involved, inspect the places where people sleep for live insects, eggs, shed skins, blood spots or dark specks. A confirmed insect or other physical evidence is more reliable than a rash alone.
This guide explains what to look for, how to check a bedroom or hotel room, how to care for uncomplicated bites, when to seek medical help, and what to do when you find infestation evidence. The medical guidance cited here concerns people. If a dog, cat or other pet has unexplained skin lesions, arrange a veterinary examination rather than trying to identify the cause from a human bite chart.

What bed bug bites look and feel like
A bite may look like a small red, pink or swollen mark and often itches. Some people develop raised welts. The marks can occur singly, in groups or in a line. The American Academy of Dermatology Association (AAD) describes clusters that may contain three to five marks in a zigzag pattern. That arrangement is a clue, not a diagnostic test.

| What you notice | What it can mean | How much it proves |
|---|---|---|
| Itchy red or swollen mark | A possible reaction to a bed bug bite, but also consistent with other bites or skin conditions | Low; appearance is nonspecific |
| Three to five marks in a zigzag or short line | A pattern sometimes reported with bed bug bites | Suggestive only; patterns vary |
| No visible mark | Some people have little or no skin reaction | Does not rule out exposure |
| Rusty spots, dark specks, eggs or an insect near the bed | Physical evidence of bed bugs in the sleeping area | Much stronger evidence than a rash alone |
Bed bugs are small, flat insects. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) gives an adult or nymph size range of about 1–7 millimeters. A mark on skin cannot tell you the insect’s species, age or source.

As the AAD notes, “Unfortunately, bedbug bites can look similar to other insect bites.” Mosquitoes, fleas, other arthropods, hives, eczema and contact irritation can produce similar-looking spots. A dermatologist can help determine the cause when the diagnosis is unclear.
When the marks appear after a night of biting
Do not assume that a clear morning means you were not bitten. The CDC says marks may appear from one to several days after a bite. The AAD says a person’s first reaction can take as long as 14 days to become noticeable. Later reactions may appear sooner, and some people never develop visible signs.
This delay makes a timeline alone unreliable. A new rash several days after a hotel stay could relate to that exposure, a different insect, an existing skin condition or something unrelated. Record when you first noticed marks, where they are located and whether anyone else sharing the room has symptoms, then inspect the sleeping area rather than trying to diagnose from timing.
Why a “telltale” line or cluster cannot confirm bed bugs
Bites are an inflammatory response, not an insect identification. CDC DPDx states that the inflammatory reaction is not specifically diagnostic for bed bugs and that confirmation is best achieved by identifying adult or nymph insects collected in sheltered areas near where the person was bitten. A straight line, random marks or no marks can all occur.

Do not use a photograph of a rash, an online bite chart or the presence of a single itchy spot as proof that a home is infested. Conversely, do not dismiss an infestation because the marks do not form a neat “breakfast, lunch and dinner” pattern. Physical inspection carries more weight than the shape of the skin reaction.
Where to look for physical evidence
Start within a few feet of places where people sleep or rest. Use a bright flashlight and inspect slowly, moving bedding aside rather than shaking it around the room.
- Mattress: Check piping, seams, labels, folds and the underside of the edge.
- Box spring and bed base: Examine seams, corners, fabric folds and any stapled or recessed areas.
- Bed frame and headboard: Look at joints, screw holes, cracks and the back of a headboard attached to the wall.
- Nearby furniture: Inspect bedside tables, drawer joints, upholstered chairs and the underside of furniture close to the bed.
- Room edges: Check cracks, crevices, baseboards, loose wallpaper and wall hangings near the sleeping area.
- Luggage and clothing: After travel, examine zippers, piping, pockets and seams before unpacking.
Clues can include live bugs, pale oval eggs, shed exoskeletons, rusty or reddish blood spots and blackish specks that may be fecal material. A heavy infestation may have a sweet, musty odor, but smell is not required and cannot identify an infestation by itself. The CDC overview and AAD diagnosis guidance show examples and describe these signs: CDC About Bed Bugs and AAD diagnosis and treatment.
How to check a bedroom step by step
- Protect the search area. Keep bedding and clothing contained so anything you find is not carried to another room. Have a flashlight, a clear container or sealable bag, and disposable gloves ready.
- Strip the bed carefully. Remove sheets and blankets one layer at a time. Place them directly into a sealed bag or hamper rather than on another bed or sofa.
- Inspect the mattress. Run the flashlight along every seam, fold and label. Pay particular attention to corners and the underside of the mattress edge.
- Examine the base and frame. Check the box spring, slats, joints, screw holes and headboard. Pull the bed slightly from the wall if it can be done safely.
- Expand outward. Search bedside furniture, upholstered items, baseboards, cracks and wall fixtures within the room. Bed bugs can shelter in narrow protected spaces.
- Document what you find. Photograph a suspected insect beside a ruler or coin for scale and, if safe, capture it in a sealed container. Do not crush evidence into fabric.
- Get identification. A pest professional experienced with bed bugs can identify an insect and determine whether treatment is needed. A rash without a physical specimen should not be treated as confirmation.
Finding one live insect near a sleeping area is stronger evidence than a cluster of welts. If you find insects or several physical clues, avoid moving to another bedroom, because relocating can spread the problem; arrange professional pest-control advice instead.

How bed bug bites differ from a diagnosis
There is no reliable self-test based solely on color, size, itch or arrangement. Flea bites, mosquito bites, allergic reactions and dermatitis overlap substantially in appearance. Bed bug evidence should therefore be considered in two separate tracks:
- Skin track: Note itch, swelling, onset and progression, and watch for infection or allergy.
- Environment track: Search sleeping areas for insects or their traces and preserve any specimen for identification.
Keeping those tracks separate prevents a common error: treating every itchy mark as proof of an infestation, or ignoring a real infestation because no one has a classic pattern. If marks continue without environmental evidence, a clinician or dermatologist can evaluate other causes.
What to do for mild bites tonight
For uncomplicated itching, wash the area with soap and water. The AAD advises that a mild corticosteroid cream can be applied if needed. The CDC says minimal symptomatic care and good hygiene are usually sufficient, and avoiding scratching lowers the chance of a secondary infection. The CDC also notes that bed bug bite treatments have not been evaluated in clinical trials and that evidence for differences between treatment options is limited; no particular medicine should be presented as a proven cure for the bites.
Keep fingernails short, use a clean cloth rather than repeatedly rubbing the skin, and monitor whether redness, warmth, pain or drainage develops. Treating the itch does not remove insects from a room, so skin care and infestation control are separate tasks.

When to call a clinician urgently
Seek medical advice for many bites, blisters, tender or oozing skin, or a rash that is worsening. These may indicate a substantial skin reaction or a secondary infection. Contact a health professional about allergic symptoms. Breathing difficulty, tongue swelling, widespread hives or other serious systemic symptoms require immediate medical care; use emergency services when symptoms are severe.
Do not scratch open areas or apply household pesticides to skin. A clinician can assess whether the marks are bed bug bites or another condition and can recommend appropriate symptom relief.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do when you find infestation signs
Contact a pest-control company experienced with bed bugs when you find live insects, eggs, shed skins, blood spots or recurring evidence near sleeping areas. The CDC recommends professional help for suspected infestations. Tell the technician where evidence was found, when it was noticed and whether other rooms or units may be affected.
The AAD cautions that bug sprays and foggers have little effect on bed bugs. Improvised spraying can scatter insects, expose people and pets to chemicals, and make professional treatment harder. Follow the pest professional’s preparation instructions exactly; do not discard furniture or carry it through the home without advice, since that can spread insects.

Notify a landlord or property manager promptly if you rent or live in shared housing. Nearby rooms or units may need inspection, even when only one bedroom shows marks.
Checking a hotel room and protecting luggage
Before unpacking, AAD recommends leaving luggage temporarily in a tiled bathroom while you inspect the room. Check bedding, mattress seams, the headboard, upholstered furniture, drawers, wall hangings, corners and cushions. Keep bags on a luggage rack away from the wall rather than on the bed or floor.
If you find signs, ask for a different room and explain what you observed. A room directly beside, above or below the suspect room may not be an appropriate substitute, so ask the lodging staff how the new room was checked.

If luggage shows signs, AAD recommends washing clothes on high heat and using a hand steamer to clean luggage. A flashlight helps you see contents, zippers and seams. These steps reduce the chance of carrying insects indoors, but a steamer or flashlight does not confirm an infestation or replace professional control when insects are present. See the AAD travel guidance at AAD: How to avoid bringing bed bugs home.
What this means for households with pets
People who share a room with dogs, cats or other animals may first notice a problem because a person has itchy marks at night. The sources cited here describe human bites and do not establish a reliable visual diagnosis for pet skin. Do not apply human creams, insecticides or household sprays to an animal unless a veterinarian specifically directs you to do so.
If a pet is scratching, losing hair, developing scabs or showing any other skin change, arrange veterinary care. At the same time, inspect the sleeping area for physical evidence and tell the veterinarian and pest professional about any findings. Bed bug control is an environmental job; treating an animal alone would not address insects sheltering in furniture or cracks.
A practical decision guide
| Your situation | Next action |
|---|---|
| One or two itchy marks, no environmental clues, no severe symptoms | Wash the area, avoid scratching, monitor it and inspect the sleeping area methodically. |
| Clusters or lines plus insects, eggs, shed skins, blood spots or dark specks | Preserve evidence and contact an experienced bed bug professional; notify a property manager if applicable. |
| Marks appear days after travel but no insects are found | Inspect luggage and clothing seams, launder travel clothes on high heat when appropriate, and seek clinical advice if the rash persists. |
| Oozing, painful or increasingly warm skin | Arrange prompt medical evaluation for possible infection. |
| Breathing difficulty, tongue swelling or widespread hives | Seek immediate emergency medical care. |
| Unexplained lesions or intense itching on a pet | Contact a veterinarian; do not use human treatments or pesticides on the animal without veterinary direction. |
The reliable answer to “Am I being bitten by bed bugs?”
Itchy red marks in a cluster or line can raise suspicion, but they cannot answer the question by themselves. Delayed or absent reactions are normal possibilities. Inspect the mattress, frame, headboard, nearby furniture and luggage for physical signs, preserve any insect for identification, and use professional pest-control help when evidence is found. Care for mild skin symptoms with basic hygiene, and escalate promptly for infection or serious allergic signs.
