These signs are warnings, not a way to diagnose hypothermia at home. Move the cat to a warm, dry place and contact a veterinarian if symptoms are significant or frostbite is possible.
What are five signs a cat may be too cold?
Watch for changes after exposure to cold, wind, snow, or ice. The signs below are a practical checklist, not a validated scoring system; any one can have causes other than cold exposure.

- Shivering or trembling. Persistent trembling after coming in from the cold deserves attention, especially alongside weakness or reduced alertness. VCA explains that visible signs alone cannot establish a pet’s body temperature or diagnose hypothermia.
- Lethargy or less alert behavior. A cat that is unusually inactive, weak, or difficult to rouse after cold exposure needs prompt veterinary advice.
- Cold, painful, or brittle skin on an extremity. Pay particular attention to the paws, ears, and tail, which are common sites of frostbite.
- Pale, gray, or bluish skin. Discoloration on the paws, ears, or tail may indicate tissue injury and should be assessed promptly.
- Swelling, licking or chewing, blisters, ulcers, or blackened tissue. These changes in an exposed area can signal frostbite. VCA recommends immediate medical attention when frostbite is suspected.
Do cold ears or paws prove a cat has hypothermia?
No. A cat’s ears or paws may feel cool, but touch and appearance cannot tell you whether its core body temperature is dangerously low. Shivering and lethargy also are not specific to hypothermia. A veterinarian can assess the cat and measure temperature safely and accurately.
For context, VCA lists normal dog and cat body temperature as 100.0°F to 102.5°F (37.7°C to 39.2°C), and says a reading below 99°F (37.2°C) or above 104°F (40.0°C) merits veterinary attention. These are not do-it-yourself thresholds for diagnosing a cold cat; temperature measurement can be difficult to do safely and accurately without training.

What should you do if your cat seems cold?
- Bring the cat indoors. Place it in a warm, dry area away from drafts.
- Contact a veterinarian promptly if the cat is markedly lethargic or weak, difficult to rouse, persistently shivering, or has any suspected frostbite. Treat suspected frostbite as an urgent veterinary concern.
- While arranging care, use warm towels or blankets. VCA advises wrapping a pet with a low temperature in warm towels or blankets. Do not use a heating pad, which can burn the skin.
- Do not rub injured tissue or apply intense direct heat. Do not delay veterinary assessment to try home treatment.
The sources do not establish a universal outdoor temperature or safe exposure duration for every cat. Weather, wind, shelter, and the individual animal matter; symptoms and suspected tissue injury should guide your decision to seek help.
Which cats are more vulnerable to cold?
Very young animals, older animals, and short-haired breeds are more vulnerable, according to Brian Collins, section chief of community practice service at Cornell’s College of Veterinary Medicine. This is general animal guidance, not a quantified estimate of risk for cats. A cat’s health and exposure conditions also matter.

If a cat must stay outside
- Provide shelter that protects from cold, wind, and precipitation, with dry bedding, food, and water.
- Cornell suggests straw for outdoor-shelter bedding and advises against newspaper, cloth, and hay in that setting.
- Prevent water from freezing and, if possible, raise the shelter off the ground.
- Check wheel wells before starting a car, and honk or knock on the hood; cats may seek warmth in wheel wells or engine compartments.
