A dog who turns away, stiffens, freezes, or leaves is telling you to stop. No single cue proves enjoyment, so read your dog’s whole body and let them opt out at any time.
Signs your dog may be comfortable
Comfort is more likely when several cues appear together and your dog remains free to move. Look for a loose, softened posture, soft or slightly squinted eyes, and an open, relaxed mouth. Your dog may also choose to stay close or move toward your hands.
These are suggestive signs, not proof of what your dog feels. A dog who is still may simply be uncertain or uncomfortable; stillness alone does not show willingness.
Signs to pause or stop
Stop your hands and give your dog space if you notice avoidance or tension, especially when the signs appear together or increase as you continue.

- Turning the head or body away, leaning away, or moving away
- Stiffening or freezing
- Lowering the body, hiding, or trying to escape
- A tense facial expression or fixed stare
Behavior guidance from AVSAB warns that stillness and stiffness can be overlooked, and notes that an uncomfortable dog may look or lean away. AAHA guidance includes social disengagement, lowered posture, hiding, escape attempts, and hypervigilance among behaviors associated with distress. Consider the situation and the cluster of signals rather than treating one posture as a verdict.
Use a pause to let your dog choose
- Start only when your dog can move away freely. Use light touch and let your dog choose a comfortable position. Preferences differ, so do not force a particular posture or area.
- Pause your hands. Give your dog a moment and watch what they choose to do. Moving toward you or re-engaging is more informative than simply remaining still.
- Follow the choice. If your dog turns away, leaves, stiffens, freezes, or shows other signs of stress, stop. Do not restrain them or treat lack of movement as consent.
- Keep checking. If your dog returns or moves toward your hands, continue gently and pause again from time to time. A dog’s preference can change during an interaction.
This is a practical way to follow the dog’s signals and pace. A peer-reviewed review describes relaxed posture, an open mouth, and movement toward an activity as behaviors that may indicate enjoyment, but it does not establish a validated at-home test for a dog’s internal experience. The review supports observing the whole dog rather than relying on one cue.

When massage needs veterinary guidance
Do not use massage to investigate a new or unexplained pain response. Avoid pressing on a painful area and ask your veterinarian about the concern. The AKC’s massage guidance recommends veterinary advice about whether massage is appropriate when a dog has a medical condition; it specifically cautions against massage over infections, open wounds, or cancerous tumors without veterinary guidance.
If your dog is reactive or becomes fearful or aggressive during touch, do not push through the response. A plan may need to involve your veterinarian, a qualified behavior professional or trainer, and a canine massage practitioner. VCA’s TTouch guidance advises paying attention to body language and changing or discontinuing the protocol if fear or aggression appears.
