Check your dog from above and from the side, then gently feel the ribs. A waist that is fading, a reduced abdominal tuck, and ribs that are harder to feel can indicate excess body fat. These signs are a screening guide, not a diagnosis: ask your veterinary team to assess your dog if you notice them or are unsure.
How can I tell if my dog is overweight?
Use your eyes and hands together. A thick coat can hide body shape, so appearance alone may mislead; palpation is important for an accurate body-condition assessment, particularly in medium- and long-haired dogs, according to the WSAVA dog body-condition chart and its nutritional assessment guidelines.

- From above: Look for a visible waist behind the ribs. It may become faint or disappear as fat cover increases.
- From the side: Check whether the abdomen rises behind the rib cage. The abdominal tuck may become less apparent or absent.
- By touch: Gently feel over the ribs. They should be palpable without excess fat covering. Slight excess fat can make them less distinct; heavy fat cover can make them difficult to feel.
At more pronounced levels of excess fat, deposits may also be noticeable over the lower back (lumbar area) and at the base of the tail. Consider these features together rather than treating any one outline or body area as a diagnosis.

- Look down from above. Stand where you can see the outline behind the rib cage. Note whether the waist is clear, faint, or absent.
- Look from the side. Observe whether the abdomen tucks upward behind the ribs, or whether that tuck is reduced or missing.
- Feel the ribs lightly. Use your fingertips without pressing hard. Note whether the ribs are easy to feel, covered by some fat, or difficult to palpate.
- Account for the coat. If your dog has a long or dense coat, put less weight on visual shape alone. If you still cannot tell, ask a veterinary professional to check.
- Record observations consistently. If you use a body-condition score, write the scale denominator too—for example, 6/9, not just “6”—and keep the method consistent over time.
What does a dog body-condition score mean?
A body-condition score (BCS) estimates fat cover using visible body shape and hands-on assessment. WSAVA’s current dog chart uses a nine-point scale, and its guideline gives 4–5/9 as the usual target for most pets. The number only makes sense with its scale: a score of 5 on a five-point scale is not the same as 5/9.

Why body fat and muscle need separate checks
Body-condition score and muscle-condition score assess different things. A dog can carry excess fat while also losing muscle, so a rounded shape does not establish that muscle condition is healthy. WSAVA recommends tracking body weight, BCS, and muscle-condition score (MCS) consistently; ask the veterinary team to assess both body fat and muscle.

When should I contact the veterinary team?
Arrange an assessment if you persistently struggle to feel your dog’s ribs, notice that the waist has become faint or disappeared, see a reduced abdominal tuck, or cannot confidently assess body condition. The WSAVA guideline identifies scores outside 4–5/9, muscle wasting, and unexplained weight change as reasons for closer nutritional evaluation.
Ask the clinic to record weight, BCS, and MCS so changes can be compared using a consistent approach. Do not sharply cut food or start a new exercise plan based only on an at-home score; a veterinary professional can evaluate your dog and advise on an appropriate next step.
