Temaril-P can relieve itching and inflammation in dogs with allergic dermatitis, but it does not identify or remove the allergy’s underlying cause. It is a prescription tablet containing trimeprazine and prednisolone; your veterinarian must decide whether it is appropriate and direct your dog’s dose and stopping plan.
What is Temaril-P used for in dogs?
Each tablet contains 5 mg of trimeprazine and 2 mg of prednisolone. The U.S. prescribing label describes trimeprazine as antipruritic (itch-relieving) and antitussive (cough-suppressing), and prednisolone as anti-inflammatory. The label recommends the medicine to relieve itching regardless of cause and reduce inflammation associated with skin disorders, including allergic dermatitis; it also describes use for certain cough conditions. These are labeled uses, not a diagnosis of what is making a dog itch. Zoetis’s Temaril-P label, hosted by DailyMed and updated January 12, 2023, says the cause should be determined and corrected when possible, because signs may return after treatment ends.

How much Temaril-P should I give my dog?
Do not calculate or change your dog’s dose from a general chart. The label’s schedule is a product-label instruction, not an individualized prescription: it describes an initial dose twice daily by weight, followed after four days by reducing to half the initial dose or to an amount sufficient to maintain remission. A veterinarian must prescribe and direct the regimen for the individual dog.

| Dog’s weight on the label | Initial dose, twice daily |
|---|---|
| Up to 10 lb | One-half tablet |
| 11–20 lb | One tablet |
| 21–40 lb | Two tablets |
| Over 40 lb | Three tablets |
After four days, the label calls for reducing the initial dose by half or using an amount sufficient to maintain remission, with individual response guiding adjustment. Ask the prescribing veterinarian for the exact amount, timing, and duration for your dog, including what to do if a dose is missed or symptoms persist.
#1 Best Overall
- Three-in-One Therapy: Prescription, oral tablet combines the anti-itch and anti-cough properties of trimeprazine with the anti-inflammatory qualities of prednisolone for a triple therapeutic effect in dogs.
- Multi-Purpose Treatment: Relieves itch and reduces inflammation from allergic & atopic dermatitis, and otitis. It also provides relief from coughing due to “kennel cough,” allergic bronchitis, and other nonspecific forms.
- Powerful & Effective: May relieve itching that doesn’t respond to other treatments.
- Simple Dosing: Twice-daily dosing administered orally as prescribed by your veterinarian.
What are the side effects of Temaril-P?
Because the combination contains a corticosteroid, the label lists possible effects including sodium retention, potassium loss, negative nitrogen balance, suppressed adrenal cortical function, delayed wound healing, osteoporosis, elevated liver enzyme levels, and vomiting or diarrhea (occasionally bloody). Corticosteroid treatment can also increase susceptibility to bacterial infection or worsen an existing infection.
The label also lists phenothiazine-related effects such as sedation, a protruding third eyelid, blood dyscrasias, and prolonged or intensified effects of analgesics, sedatives, and general anesthetics. It specifically flags increased thirst and urination as less obvious signs for veterinarians to detect. Contact your veterinarian if you notice concerning changes, and make sure the clinic knows about other medicines or an upcoming procedure.
What should I tell the veterinarian before treatment?
Discuss any current or recent steroid treatment, known or suspected infection, other medicines, and whether your dog is pregnant or may be bred. The label warns that corticosteroids may induce premature parturition and cause pregnancy complications; congenital anomalies have also been reported in animal offspring. The veterinarian can weigh these risks against the reason for treatment and determine what monitoring is appropriate.

Can I stop giving Temaril-P?
Do not stop a prolonged course abruptly or change the schedule without veterinary direction. The label says prolonged treatment must be withdrawn gradually because corticosteroids may suppress the body’s own steroid production. Ask the prescriber for a tapering plan. Itching can also return after discontinuation if its underlying cause has not been addressed.
