The safest way to recognize illness in a pet turtle is to compare it with its own normal behavior and appearance. A meaningful change—such as eating less, becoming unusually inactive, developing eye or nose discharge, breathing with difficulty, swimming tilted, or showing a damaged or softened shell—should prompt advice from a veterinarian familiar with reptile diseases.
These observations are warning signs, not a diagnosis. Several different diseases can produce the same symptom, and a turtle can look only mildly different while still needing care. Open-mouth breathing, gasping, wheezing, or obvious effort to breathe warrants prompt veterinary contact.

1. Check behavior and appetite against your turtle’s normal baseline
Start with the change you can observe most easily: is your turtle behaving as it usually does? Reduced appetite, lethargy, and a noticeable departure from the animal’s normal activity are useful signals that something is wrong. A turtle that normally explores, responds at feeding time, or moves between basking and water areas may instead remain inactive or ignore food.
What to record
- Whether the turtle approaches food and how much it actually eats.
- How long it remains inactive compared with its usual routine.
- Whether it still moves normally between its usual areas.
- Any additional change that appeared at the same time, such as discharge, altered breathing, or a shell abnormality.
Use the turtle’s established pattern as the reference point rather than a fixed expectation for every turtle. Species, age, and individual routine affect normal activity. A single missed meal may not identify a cause, but a persistent or combined change deserves attention.

Why appetite loss alone cannot identify the disease
Loss of appetite and lethargy are nonspecific. They can occur with many diseases and do not tell an owner which condition is present. Do not treat these signs as proof of a particular infection, nutritional problem, or other diagnosis. If your turtle deviates from normal, VCA Animal Hospitals advises evaluation by a veterinarian familiar with reptile diseases as soon as possible.
2. Inspect the eyes, nose, and mouth for discharge or swelling
Examine the head during a calm period, without forcing the mouth open or handling the turtle more than necessary. Look for nasal discharge, excess mucus or bubbles around the nose, mouth, or eyes, and swollen eyelids. These findings can accompany respiratory disease, but they may also occur with other health problems, so appearance alone cannot establish the cause.
Signs that deserve a veterinary call
- Liquid or crusted material around one or both nostrils.
- Bubbles or unusually heavy mucus around the mouth, nose, or eyes.
- Eyelids that appear swollen, puffy, or difficult to open.
- Discharge that persists or appears together with reduced appetite, inactivity, or abnormal breathing.
Compare both sides of the face and note when the change began. A photograph taken in good light can help a veterinarian see what you observed, but it should not replace an examination. Avoid putting human eye products, leftover antibiotics, or other substances on the turtle unless a reptile veterinarian has prescribed them.

3. Watch breathing and swimming closely
Breathing changes are among the most urgent warning signs. Watch the turtle while it is resting and moving. Wheezing, extending the neck to breathe, open-mouth breathing, or gasping indicates abnormal respiratory effort. In an aquatic turtle, swimming with a persistent tilt can be associated with pneumonia.
When breathing is an emergency
Contact a veterinarian familiar with reptiles promptly for open-mouth breathing, gasping, pronounced wheezing, or other visible difficulty breathing. Do not wait to see whether these signs resolve after the next feeding. A turtle that is struggling to breathe may deteriorate, and only an examination can determine whether pneumonia or another condition is involved.
How to observe without stressing the turtle
- Watch from outside the enclosure first, noting the breathing pattern at rest.
- Look for repeated neck extension, audible wheezing, or the mouth opening during breaths.
- For an aquatic turtle, observe several swimming passes and note whether the body repeatedly lists or tilts.
- Write down the time, duration, and frequency of each episode, then call a reptile-experienced veterinarian.
Do not try to diagnose pneumonia from a tilted posture. Tilting can be associated with pneumonia, but the sign is not conclusive by itself.

4. Examine the shell and overall body condition
The shell is part of the turtle’s health history. A shell that becomes soft, cracked, pitted, discolored, or develops abnormal growth should be evaluated. A soft shell or bone deformity can be associated with metabolic bone disease, while cracking, pitting, discoloration, or infection can have other causes.

What a careful visual check includes
- Run your eyes over the top shell and the underside for new cracks, pits, unusual color, or growth.
- Look for a change in firmness only if you can do so gently and safely; do not press hard on a painful or damaged area.
- Compare the shell with earlier photographs when available.
- Note whether shell changes occur with poor appetite, lethargy, discharge, or breathing problems.
Visible shell damage is not a reason to scrape, file, disinfect, or seal the area at home. The underlying problem may be trauma, infection, metabolic bone disease, or another condition requiring different treatment. Arrange an examination rather than trying to match the appearance to an online photograph.
What to do when you notice a change
Use a simple observation-and-escalation plan
- Confirm the change. Compare the turtle with its recent normal routine, not with another species or an online video.
- Record the details. Note appetite, activity, discharge, breathing pattern, swimming posture, shell appearance, and when each change started.
- Take clear photographs or short videos. Capture the face, shell, breathing, or swimming pattern without repeatedly handling the animal.
- Contact a reptile-experienced veterinarian. VCA Animal Hospitals recommends evaluation as soon as possible for any deviation from normal.
- Report urgent respiratory signs immediately. Tell the clinic if the turtle is gasping, breathing with its mouth open, wheezing, extending its neck, or repeatedly tilting while swimming.
When you call, give the turtle’s species if known, whether it is aquatic or terrestrial, the exact signs, and the timeline. Explain whether the turtle is still eating and whether more than one sign is present. This information helps the clinic judge urgency, but it does not replace the appointment.

What not to do while waiting for advice
- Do not give medication, vitamin injections, or supplements based solely on a symptom or internet suggestion.
- Do not use vitamin A as a home treatment. VCA notes that treatment such as vitamin A should be supervised by a veterinarian because overdose can occur.
- Do not assume a lamp, dietary change, or cleaning product will cure an active illness.
- Do not delay a veterinary call because the turtle is still eating; turtles can show more than one sign, and appetite alone does not rule out disease.
Habitat lighting is prevention context, not a cure
Appropriate ultraviolet lighting is part of husbandry for species that require it. VCA identifies inadequate UV light as one factor that can contribute to metabolic bone disease in tortoises. That information is useful when reviewing the enclosure with a veterinarian, especially if the shell is soft or bones appear deformed.
UV requirements vary by species and enclosure design. A lamp cannot diagnose a shell problem and should not be presented as treatment for a turtle that is already ill. Ask a reptile veterinarian to assess the species, setup, lighting arrangement, and any needed changes rather than choosing a product as a substitute for medical care.

|---|---|---|
| Reduced appetite or unusual inactivity | Nonspecific illness signal; many diseases can cause it | Record the change and arrange evaluation by a reptile-experienced veterinarian |

| Wheezing, neck extension, open-mouth breathing, or gasping | Abnormal respiratory effort | Seek prompt veterinary advice |
| Persistent tilt while swimming | Can be associated with pneumonia in aquatic turtles | Arrange prompt veterinary evaluation; do not self-diagnose |
| Soft, cracked, pitted, discolored shell or abnormal growth | Possible metabolic bone disease, trauma, infection, or another disorder | Have the shell and husbandry examined by a reptile veterinarian |
Questions owners commonly have
Can I tell which disease my turtle has from one sign?
No. Appetite loss and lethargy are nonspecific, and even more distinctive findings such as discharge or a shell change can have multiple causes. The signs tell you when to seek professional evaluation, not which treatment to give.
Is a tilted aquatic turtle always suffering from pneumonia?
No. A tilt while swimming may be associated with pneumonia, but it is not a diagnosis. Because abnormal swimming can signal a serious problem, contact a veterinarian familiar with reptiles.
Should I wait several days before calling if my turtle is still eating?
No general waiting period is established by these signs. A persistent or combined deviation from normal should be reported, and any open-mouth breathing, gasping, wheezing, or obvious breathing effort deserves prompt contact.

Can better UV lighting make a sick turtle well?
Proper UV lighting is relevant husbandry for species that need it and inadequate UV light can contribute to metabolic bone disease in tortoises. It does not diagnose or cure an existing illness. Have the enclosure reviewed alongside veterinary care.
