How to Tell the Sex of a Kitten

The reliable way to sex a kitten is to compare the shape of its genital opening and the distance from the anus. Here is what male and female kittens typically look like and when to ask a vet.

The dependable way to sex a kitten is to look beneath the tail—not at its coat, size, or behavior. Check the shape of the genital opening and the distance between that opening and the anus together. A female usually has a vertical slit close to the anus; a male usually has a round opening set farther away.

This can be difficult in newborns because everything is tiny and underdeveloped. Kittens are often easier to identify at around 3 weeks old, although some kittens remain difficult to sex accurately until they are older.

How to check a kitten safely

  1. Keep the kitten warm. Work quickly and use a soft, non-slip towel. You can place the kitten on its stomach or hold it securely against your body.
  2. Lift the tail gently. Raise it only enough to see the area underneath. Never pull, bend, or hold a kitten by its tail.
  3. Find the anus. This is the upper opening, directly beneath the tail.
  4. Find the genital opening. It is the second opening below the anus.
  5. Assess shape and spacing. Look for a vertical slit versus a round opening, and note whether the two openings are close together or clearly separated.

Good lighting helps, especially with dark-coated or long-haired kittens. Do not squeeze the area or press firmly to look for testicles. If the view is unclear, return the kitten to its mother or a warm nest and try again later.

How to identify a female kitten

A female kitten’s genital opening is usually a vertical slit positioned very close below the anus. The two openings may look like an upside-down exclamation mark:

● anus
│ vulva

The gap between the anus and vulva—the anogenital distance—is short, generally less than about half an inch in young kittens. The slit may be hard to see in a newborn, so the closeness of the openings is an important part of the identification.

How to identify a male kitten

A male kitten’s genital opening, or prepuce, usually looks like a small round dot. It is farther below the anus, leaving a more obvious gap between the two openings:

● anus
• prepuce

In an intact male, the scrotal area lies between the anus and penile opening. Testicles may become easier to see or feel as the kitten grows, but they can be extremely small in young kittens. Their absence from view does not prove that a kitten is female.

Female versus male kitten: quick comparison

Feature Female Male
Genital opening Usually a vertical slit Usually a round or dot-like opening
Distance from anus Short; openings are close together Longer; openings are more separated
Typical appearance ●│ ● •
Testicles Absent May be visible or palpable later, but not always in young kittens

The shape and spacing of the openings are more useful than trying to feel for testicles. If possible, compare kittens of similar age and size from the same litter. Seeing the difference side by side can make a borderline case much clearer.

Why sexing a young kitten can be tricky

Newborn kittens have very small, immature genital structures. Several ordinary factors can make an accurate identification harder:

  • Long or dense fur hides the openings.
  • Dim lighting makes the distance difficult to judge.
  • The kitten moves, cries, or clamps its tail down.
  • The scrotal area is mistaken for a second opening.
  • A male’s testicles are too small to see or feel.
  • The kitten has already been neutered, so testicles are not apparent.

Do not keep handling a cold, distressed, or nursing kitten just to get a better look. Warmth and reunion with the mother take priority. Wait until the kitten is settled, then check briefly again. Around 3 weeks old, many kittens are easier to sex, though veterinary confirmation may still be needed for kittens under about 8 weeks.

Can coat color reveal whether a kitten is male or female?

Coat color can offer a clue, but it cannot confirm sex.

  • Calico and tortoiseshell cats are almost always female because the genes for black and orange coloring are typically carried on two X chromosomes.
  • Rare male calico or tortoiseshell cats do occur, often because of an atypical chromosome arrangement such as XXY.
  • Orange cats are more often male, but orange females are common enough that color is not a reliable test.

Use the anatomy beneath the tail for identification. Color only changes the odds.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Looking at the nipples: both male and female kittens have nipples.
  • Using body size or head shape: these vary with age, breed, nutrition, and individual development.
  • Reading behavior: playfulness, confidence, vocalization, and affection do not reliably indicate sex.
  • Assuming no visible testicles means female: they may not have descended visibly, may be too small to detect, or the kitten may be neutered.
  • Relying on one quick glance: confirm both the opening’s shape and its distance from the anus.

When a veterinarian should check

Ask a veterinarian to confirm the sex if the kitten is very young, the openings are indistinct, or you need an accurate record for adoption, medical paperwork, vaccination, or sterilization planning. Veterinary advice is especially important if you see only one opening, unusual swelling, asymmetry, or anatomy that does not clearly match either typical pattern.

Most kittens can be sexed by visual examination. In uncommon cases, differences in sexual development mean the external anatomy may not fit the usual male or female pattern. A veterinarian can examine the kitten properly and advise on any further testing or care.

What does a male kitten’s private area look like?

A male usually has a small, round genital opening set farther below the anus, with a gap for the scrotal area between them. Testicles may not be visible in a young kitten.

Can you tell a kitten’s sex by its color?

No. Calico and tortoiseshell kittens are almost always female, and orange kittens are more often male, but exceptions occur. Check the shape and spacing of the openings or ask a veterinarian.

The Bottom Line

Look beneath the tail for two details: a female kitten usually has a close-set vertical slit, while a male usually has a farther-away round opening. Handle the kitten gently, keep it warm, and have a veterinarian confirm the result if the anatomy is unclear or the sex needs to be recorded accurately.
