How to Tell When Birds Are Playing

Birds show object, locomotor and social play, but the same actions can also serve practical purposes. This guide explains the evidence and a careful way to identify play.

Yes—birds play. Scientists describe object, locomotor and social play in birds, but identifying it requires context because the same chase, flight, object manipulation or contact can also be feeding, courtship, aggression or exploration.

What bird play is—and why the label is cautious

Play is behavior performed without an obvious immediate practical payoff, often repeated or varied in a way that appears intrinsically engaging. In birds, that definition is useful but not decisive: a young raven tossing a stick might be practicing a useful skill, investigating a new object, attracting another bird or simply playing. The visible action alone cannot settle the question.

Millicent S. Ficken made the identification problem explicit in her classic 1977 review Avian Play: “Play is more difficult to distinguish from other activities in birds than in mammals.” A reliable interpretation therefore combines the bird’s age, social setting, object, sequence of actions and what happens immediately before and after the behavior.

The three recognized forms of play

Researchers commonly organize avian play into three overlapping categories. A single episode can include more than one: two ravens may manipulate an object while chasing each other, combining object and social play.

Form What it looks like Questions to ask
Object play Carrying, flinging, ripping, dropping, retrieving or otherwise manipulating an inanimate object. Is the object novel or readily available? Does the bird keep handling it without eating it, building with it or using it for another clear task?
Locomotor play Spontaneous runs, jumps, turns, flights, hanging or other movement patterns that do not have an obvious immediate destination or practical goal. Are the movements repeated or varied? Does the bird stop and resume voluntarily? Is there a partner or threat that explains the movement more directly?
Social play Chasing, wrestling, contact, co-flying, co-lying or cooperative manipulation between birds. Do the birds take turns, reverse roles and remain engaged without escalation? Do both appear able to leave?

These categories come from the major avian play reviews, but they are descriptive rather than a promise that every instance has the same purpose. Play may support several functions at once.

Which birds have documented play?

The strongest evidence is concentrated in corvids—such as ravens and crows—and in parrots and cockatoos. Records also exist for hornbills, babblers and some songbirds. That distribution reflects both biology and research effort; it is not a map of all species that can play.

A 2003 comparative analysis by Judy Diamond and Alan B. Bond reported unambiguous social play in 13 parrot species and seven corvid species. The finding demonstrates that social play is not restricted to one unusually interactive species, but it does not establish a prevalence rate for parrots, corvids or birds generally.

Gisela Kaplan’s 2024 review emphasizes how narrow the evidence base remains. Adult social play has been studied in only a small number of avian species, especially songbirds, parrots and cockatoos. Kaplan describes adult social play in birds as “relatively unexplored” with respect to its environmental, psychological and social dynamics. It is therefore safer to say that play is documented in particular lineages and situations than to claim that all birds play in the same way.

What a raven study reveals about play

A 2025 field study followed individually marked, free-flying common ravens in the Austrian Alps. The researchers found that object play decreased with age, yet adults still played occasionally. Ravens also played for longer with novel objects than with familiar ones.

Those results support two practical conclusions. First, a playful-looking action is not limited to fledglings or juveniles; an adult can engage in it, although less often in the studied population. Second, novelty matters. A raven’s repeated handling of an unfamiliar item may be part of learning about its physical and social environment rather than a single-purpose “toy” behavior.

The study’s authors concluded that raven object play likely has more than one function. Because the observations came from free-flying birds in one Alpine study, they should not be converted into a universal schedule, age rule or claim about every raven population.

Why birds might play

No single explanation fits every species or episode. The evidence and current hypotheses point to several overlapping possibilities:

  • Motor practice: repeated jumps, turns, flights or object movements may help a bird control its body and adjust movements flexibly.
  • Exploration: manipulating a new object can reveal how it moves, feels, breaks or reacts, providing information about the bird’s surroundings.
  • Foraging and tool-use practice: handling objects may build skills later useful in obtaining food or solving physical problems. The behavior is not automatically foraging just because it could have a future benefit.
  • Social assessment: chasing, wrestling or cooperative handling may allow birds to evaluate one another, negotiate boundaries and learn who will yield or take a turn.
  • Affiliative bonding: relaxed contact, co-flying or reciprocal games may strengthen relationships within a pair, family or group.

These functions can overlap. A young parrot manipulating a safe object may be exploring it, exercising its beak and learning how a companion responds. A raven may gain physical information from an object while also creating an opportunity for social interaction.

How to decide whether a bird is playing

Use a sequence of observations rather than a single dramatic movement. The following procedure helps reduce over-interpretation in a garden, field site or home.

  1. Record the setting. Note species, age class if known, number of birds, habitat, time and whether food, a nest, a mate, a predator or a territorial boundary is nearby.
  2. Describe actions without labeling them. Write “bird carried a pine cone, dropped it, retrieved it and tossed it three times,” not “bird played.” Neutral notes make later comparison possible.
  3. Look for spontaneity. Play is more plausible when the behavior begins without an obvious external demand and the bird can stop, leave and resume voluntarily.
  4. Check repetition and variation. Repeated actions, especially with small changes in direction, grip or timing, fit play better than one purposeful movement.
  5. Watch for turn-taking or role reversal. In social episodes, the pursuer may become the pursued, or each bird may initiate contact. Balanced participation is more consistent with play than one-sided escape.
  6. Assess the immediate payoff. If the bird eats the item, carries nesting material to a nest, drives an intruder away or obtains a mate, a practical explanation deserves priority. Lack of an immediate payoff supports—but does not prove—the play interpretation.
  7. Test the novelty clue cautiously. Continued engagement with a new object can indicate object play or exploration. Do not assume novelty alone means play.
  8. Follow the outcome. Escalation, injury, alarm calls or persistent avoidance point away from play. A relaxed return to the activity, with both birds able to disengage, supports a playful interpretation.

One anecdote is weak evidence. Several episodes showing the same pattern across contexts are more informative, especially when recorded without disturbing the birds.

Behavior that may resemble play Clues favoring the alternative What would keep play in consideration
Feeding or foraging The bird consumes the item, searches systematically for food, feeds a dependent young bird or carries food toward a nest or cache. The bird repeatedly manipulates an inedible object, abandons it and returns without obtaining food.
Fighting or territorial defense One bird persistently flees, displays threat postures, gives alarm or distress calls, suffers injury or is driven from a resource or boundary. Chases are reciprocal, contact is controlled, roles change and either bird can leave without pursuit continuing.
Courtship The behavior is tied to pair formation, mate solicitation, courtship feeding, copulation or a nest site and follows species-typical reproductive displays. Similar movements occur outside a reproductive context, involve multiple partners or include flexible object manipulation with no mating sequence.
Exploration The bird briefly inspects many unfamiliar objects or places, then moves on as information is gathered. The bird returns to one object, repeats and varies actions, or recruits a partner after the initial inspection.
Stereotyped behavior The same movement is rigid, frequent, apparently stress-linked and performed in a restricted setting with little variation. The action is flexible, episodic, responsive to a partner or object and easy for the bird to interrupt.

These are tendencies, not diagnostic tests. Exploration can become play, and play can produce useful information. If the evidence remains mixed, “object manipulation of uncertain function” is a more accurate field note than a confident label.

Juveniles, adults and social partners

Young birds often attract attention because their movements are conspicuous and their skills are still developing. Motor practice, exploration and social learning are plausible reasons for juvenile play, but age does not define the category. The Alpine raven study found a decline in object play with age, not a complete disappearance; adults still played occasionally.

Social play deserves particular caution in adults. Kaplan’s 2024 review notes that adult social play has been examined in relatively few species, so observations in one parrot, cockatoo, songbird or corvid group should not be generalized to all adults. A pair that appears to wrestle may be strengthening a bond, testing boundaries, courting or resolving a conflict; context determines which interpretation is most defensible.

Wild birds and companion birds are different evidence settings

In the wild, birds choose objects and partners in an environment where food, predators, weather and territory can change the value of an action. The 2025 raven work is informative precisely because it observed free-flying, individually marked birds rather than relying only on a cage-based display.

Companion birds may manipulate household items or a parrot bird toy supplied as enrichment. Such behavior can provide exercise and engagement, but a captive bird’s interaction with a designed toy is not direct evidence about how that species behaves in the wild. Safety also matters: remove objects that can be swallowed, shed dangerous fibers, trap toes or contain toxic finishes, and supervise unfamiliar items. Enrichment should never be used to force contact or to interpret every manipulation as proof of play.

Common interpretation errors

  • Assuming movement equals play: fast flight can be escape, courtship, travel or territorial defense.
  • Using “all birds” as a shortcut: evidence is taxonomically concentrated, and no published percentage establishes how many bird species play.
  • Treating a useful outcome as proof of intention: a playful action may later improve foraging or tool use without being performed for that immediate purpose.
  • Ignoring the partner’s experience: a chase is not social play if one bird is consistently trying to escape.
  • Overreading a single clip: short videos often omit the approach, trigger and aftermath needed to distinguish play from conflict or feeding.
  • Confusing repetition with compulsion: flexible, interruptible repetition fits play better than rigid, stress-associated stereotypy.

A practical field checklist

Before calling an observation play, ask:

  • What exactly did the bird do, and for how long?
  • Was there an immediate goal such as food, nesting, mating, escape or defense?
  • Did the bird repeat or vary the action?
  • Could it stop and leave freely?
  • In a social interaction, did roles reverse or did both birds participate?
  • Was the object novel, and did the bird continue handling it without consuming or using it for a clear practical task?
  • Did the behavior end calmly, or with alarm, injury, pursuit or avoidance?
  • Is the interpretation supported by more than one observation?

If most answers point toward spontaneous, flexible, low-stakes engagement, play is a reasonable working interpretation. If practical explanations remain equally strong, report the behavior descriptively and keep the label provisional.

What the evidence can—and cannot—tell us

Birds clearly show object, locomotor and social behaviors that meet commonly used descriptions of play. Ravens, parrots, cockatoos and some other groups provide the clearest documented examples, including social play recorded in 13 parrot species and seven corvid species in the 2003 comparative analysis. Yet scientists do not have a single prevalence percentage for birds as a whole, and adult social play remains poorly studied across most species.

The most accurate answer to “Do birds play?” is therefore yes, with a qualification: play is a context-dependent interpretation, not a label that can be assigned from one movement. Observe the sequence, compare plausible alternatives and treat the bird’s freedom, reciprocity and lack of an immediate payoff as clues rather than proof.
