Breathing trouble, collapse, blue or very pale gums, seizures, unconsciousness, major injury, suspected poisoning, severe bleeding, or inability to stand are reasons to contact an emergency veterinarian and arrange care now. Call ahead if you can, describe what you see, and follow the clinic’s instructions. A puppy can have a serious hidden injury or illness even if it seems quiet or looks mostly normal.

Signs that mean emergency care now

Prioritize breathing, consciousness, circulation, injury, and possible toxin exposure. Do not wait to see whether these signs worsen.

Breathing difficulty

Rapid or labored breathing, open-mouth breathing, pronounced abdominal effort, an extended head and neck, noisy breathing, blue gums or muzzle, weakness, or collapse can indicate respiratory distress. Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine describes respiratory distress as a serious emergency requiring immediate attention (Cornell: Recognizing and Responding to Canine Respiratory Distress, updated March 2025). Call an emergency hospital and head there promptly. Keep the car cool; if the puppy is too weak to stand, Cornell advises laying it on its stomach with its chin supported and neck extended.

Collapse, abnormal gum color, or reduced responsiveness

Very pale gums, collapse, a weak or rapid pulse, inability to stand, apparent paralysis, or loss of consciousness may accompany shock or another serious condition. Seek emergency care immediately. Do not try to rule out an emergency by checking only one sign or by relying on a home examination.

Seizures

Move objects away so the puppy is less likely to strike them, and keep your hands away from its mouth. Contact or go to a veterinarian immediately. Do not put food, water, medicine, or other substances in its mouth during an active seizure; RECOVER’s 2026 first-aid guidance specifically cautions against oral or gum-applied treatment during seizures (RECOVER Guidelines: First Aid for Dogs and Cats).

Trauma, serious wounds, or uncontrolled bleeding

A vehicle strike, fall, animal attack, suspected fracture, severe pain, or bleeding that will not stop needs immediate veterinary assessment. Internal injuries can be present even when a puppy seems to behave normally after an accident; AAHA advises immediate attention after known trauma (AAHA: Help! Is This a Pet Emergency?). If it is safe, press a clean cloth or gauze firmly on external bleeding while arranging transport. Do not delay the trip to complete first aid.

Possible poisoning

Call a veterinarian or animal poison service promptly if the puppy may have eaten a medication, chemical, plant, or other harmful substance. Be ready to say what it may have eaten and when. Do not induce vomiting or give a home remedy unless a veterinary professional directs you to do so. The ASPCA’s emergency-care page lists its U.S. poison-control number as (888) 426-4435; check the page for current availability, fees, and regional relevance before relying on it (ASPCA: Emergency Care for Your Pet).

Other signs that need prompt veterinary advice

Not every concerning symptom establishes that a puppy needs an emergency hospital immediately, but young puppies can deteriorate quickly. Call a veterinarian or emergency clinic promptly for guidance, and escalate to emergency transport if symptoms are severe or paired with weakness, abnormal breathing, poor responsiveness, or inability to keep fluids down.

  • Repeated vomiting or severe diarrhea: Blood, marked weakness, lethargy, or inability to keep fluids down increases concern. Ongoing fluid loss can lead to dehydration, which is particularly serious in puppies (AAHA: Help! Is This a Pet Emergency?).
  • Possible dehydration or marked lethargy: Ask a veterinarian for prompt advice, especially if the puppy is weak, unusually unresponsive, or also vomiting or having diarrhea. Do not use an adult dog’s vital-sign range or an uncertain age estimate as a remote safety test; the puppy’s age and condition may not be known.
  • Cold exposure: Young puppies are vulnerable to hypothermia. Weakness, shallow breathing, confusion, collapse, or unconsciousness after cold exposure are serious signs. Keep the puppy dry and provide gentle warmth while contacting a veterinarian; avoid rapid rewarming or direct hot heat (VCA: Caring for Orphaned Puppies; Merck Veterinary Manual: What to Do in a Dog or Cat Emergency).

Quietness, sleep, or lack of crying does not show that a found puppy is safe. When you are uncertain, call a veterinary clinic and describe the puppy’s condition rather than waiting for a clearer sign.

What to do while arranging care

  1. Protect yourself and check the scene. A frightened or injured puppy may bite. Do not put your face or hands near its mouth. If handling seems unsafe, get help rather than risking a bite (ASPCA: Emergency Care for Your Pet).
  2. Call a veterinarian or emergency clinic. Say that you found a puppy; describe visible signs, any known accident, and any possible toxin. Call ahead when possible so staff can advise you and prepare for arrival (Merck Veterinary Manual: What to Do in a Dog or Cat Emergency).
  3. Transport calmly and limit movement if injury is possible. Support the puppy on a firm, flat surface or folded blanket. Minimize movement of the head, neck, and spine when trauma is suspected. Follow the clinic’s directions.
  4. Keep first aid simple and temporary. For external bleeding, maintain firm pressure with a clean cloth or gauze; a bandage should be firm but not overly tight. For suspected heat stroke, move the puppy out of the heat, cool it with cool water or wet towels, and go to a veterinarian right away; do not immerse it in cold water (Merck Veterinary Manual: What to Do in a Dog or Cat Emergency).
  5. Do not force food, water, or medicine. This can be unsafe for a poorly responsive puppy, one that is vomiting, or one having a seizure. Ask the veterinarian what, if anything, to do during transport. First aid is a bridge to care, not a substitute for it.

Why a found puppy may need assessment even without dramatic signs

A puppy’s age, history, and time without food, water, or shelter may be unknown. Young puppies are vulnerable to overlapping problems such as low body temperature, dehydration, and low blood sugar; weakness or a change in responsiveness can therefore deserve prompt attention. A puppy may also appear normal after trauma despite internal injury. Neither a calm appearance nor the absence of one particular symptom can rule out serious illness or injury.

Remote descriptions cannot establish whether a particular puppy is safe to monitor. A veterinarian needs to make that judgment based on the puppy’s condition and examination; do not apply newborn temperature charts or adult-dog vital-sign ranges to an unidentified-age puppy as a substitute for care.
