Those can be normal signs of attachment. The stronger warning is a repeated pattern of distress that appears when you leave or while you are away—such as persistent vocalizing, house-soiling, vomiting, appetite changes, frantic grooming, destruction, or escape attempts—and that affects the cat’s health, routine, or safety.
Because feline separation-anxiety criteria are not clearly defined, observations are clues rather than a home diagnosis. Record what happens during absences, arrange a veterinary examination for new or persistent changes, and use gradual, calm absences rather than forcing long separations.

Can cats have separation anxiety?
Yes. Cats can develop separation-related distress, but it is not possible to diagnose it from affection or one isolated behavior. The University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine notes that diagnostic criteria for separation anxiety in cats have not been clearly defined. That means a responsible assessment looks for a consistent pattern and rules out medical and environmental explanations.

The University of Illinois also quotes Dr. Loukia Agapis, director of its Shelter Medicine Program: “Separation anxiety is particularly common among animals that have been rehomed multiple times. However, it can develop in any pet, no matter their background.” A cat’s history may affect risk, but it neither proves nor excludes the problem.

Think of “missing you” as a normal emotional response and separation anxiety as possible distress that repeatedly disrupts behavior or welfare during your absence. The distinction depends on timing, intensity, duration, change from the cat’s normal behavior, and consequences.
Affection, attachment and distress are not the same thing
Behaviors that can be ordinary affection
- Following you around the home
- Seeking petting or sitting on your lap
- Sleeping near you
- Waiting by a door when you return
- Meowing briefly when you leave or greeting you excitedly when you come back
These behaviors show that your cat values contact or has learned your routine. They do not show what happens after the door closes. A cat can be strongly attached and still relax alone, eat, groom normally, and sleep until you return.
What makes separation-related distress more plausible
Concern rises when several changes repeatedly occur specifically around departures and continue during the absence. For example, a cat that is calm when you are home but begins loud, persistent meowing within minutes of your departure, refuses food, vomits, or eliminates on your belongings warrants assessment. The same behavior occurring at unrelated times points toward a wider behavioral or medical question rather than separation alone.
Look for interference with basic functions: eating, drinking, using the litter box, resting, grooming, and staying safe. A dramatic reunion by itself is not diagnostic; it becomes more meaningful when paired with a documented pattern of distress while alone.
Possible signs to watch for when you leave
The University of Illinois, PetMD, and general veterinary guidance describe the following behaviors in cats with possible separation-related problems. None is specific enough to prove anxiety. Record the timing and context instead of checking boxes in isolation.

| Observation | Details that make it more useful | Why it needs caution |
|---|---|---|
| Persistent vocalization | Note whether meowing starts after departure, how long it lasts, and whether it is continuous or intermittent. | Vocalizing can also reflect pain, illness, hunger, mating-related behavior, cognitive change, or frustration. |
| Urination or defecation outside the litter box | Record location, timing, amount, and whether it happens only during absences. | Urinary disease, gastrointestinal disease, litter-box aversion, territorial marking, and access problems must be considered first. |
| Eating too quickly or not eating | Compare the cat’s normal meal pattern and note whether food is refused only when alone. | Nausea, dental pain, other illness, food changes, and stressors unrelated to departure can alter appetite. |
| Vomiting | Record when it occurs, how often, and what it contains; video cannot replace a medical examination. | Vomiting has many medical causes and should not automatically be labeled anxiety. |
| Excessive grooming | Look for repeated licking, hair loss, skin irritation, or a new grooming focus. | Parasites, allergies, pain, and skin disease can produce the same signs. |
| Destructive behavior | Identify what is damaged, where it occurs, and whether the cat is trying to reach an exit. | Scratching, climbing, play, boredom, and environmental conflict may look similar. |
| Escape attempts or self-injury | Check doors, windows, screens, claws, teeth, and injured skin after an absence. | This is a safety issue requiring prompt veterinary advice, regardless of the cause. |
| Exuberant reunion | Consider it only alongside behavior recorded during the absence. | Happy greetings are common in securely attached cats and are not diagnostic. |
PetMD’s 2020 article reported that 64% of cats evaluated in a cited study were described as securely attached to their humans. That secondary figure does not establish that secure attachment prevents anxiety, and it should not be used to diagnose an individual cat.
How to find out what your cat does while you are away
Many cats behave differently once a person is out of sight. A camera recording can reveal whether the cat settles after a brief protest or remains distressed for most of the absence. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), in guidance updated July 14, 2026, says video recordings “can help your AAHA-accredited veterinarian or a certified veterinary behaviorist better understand what happens during your absence.”

- Choose a normal departure. Do not stage a frightening event or deliberately extend the absence. Keep doors, windows, cords, and climbing areas secure.
- Place the camera where it can see the main resting area, food and water, and litter-box approach. Avoid filming private human spaces. A camera is optional; it supports assessment but cannot identify the cause by itself.
- Record the entire interval. Note the departure time, the first behavior you see, when the cat settles or escalates, and the return time.
- Repeat on more than one ordinary day. A single recording may reflect a delivery, noise, weather event, illness, or an unusual schedule.
- Write a matching timeline. Include appetite, vomiting, elimination, grooming, damage, sleep, and any failed attempt to settle.
- Save representative clips for the veterinarian. Include a calm absence as well as a concerning one, and explain what changed from baseline.
What to record in your timeline
- Date and length of the absence
- How soon behavior began after you left
- Episode duration and number of episodes
- Whether the cat ate, drank, rested, groomed, vocalized, paced, eliminated, or played
- Any trigger before departure, such as packing, work clothes, feeding, or another person leaving
- Recent changes in schedule, household members, furniture, litter, food, construction, travel, or other animals
The Merck Veterinary Manual recommends documenting onset, duration, frequency, episode length, pattern changes, household routine, and living conditions as part of a behavioral history. That detail helps a veterinarian distinguish a departure-linked pattern from a problem that happens throughout the day.
A practical way to compare normal attachment with possible distress
| Question | More consistent with ordinary attachment | More concerning for separation-related distress |
|---|---|---|
| What happens while you are home? | The cat seeks contact but can also rest, eat, groom, and use the litter box normally. | The same intense behavior occurs repeatedly even when you are present, or there are signs of illness. |
| What happens after departure? | A brief meow or door watch followed by settling, eating, or sleeping. | Persistent vocalization, pacing, frantic searching, destruction, house-soiling, vomiting, or refusal to settle. |
| How soon does it start? | No consistent relationship to departure. | It begins predictably during departure cues or shortly after you leave. |
| How long and how often? | Short, occasional episodes with normal recovery. | Repeated episodes, long duration, or worsening intensity across absences. |
| How many signs occur together? | One mild behavior without a functional change. | A cluster affecting vocalization, appetite, elimination, grooming, rest, or safety. |
| Is it a change from baseline? | The behavior has always been stable and does not impair daily life. | A new or escalating change from the cat’s established routine. |
| Have medical causes been assessed? | A veterinarian has found no relevant medical issue and the pattern remains departure-linked. | No examination has occurred, or symptoms could plausibly reflect pain or illness. |
This is an observation framework, not a validated home test. No single threshold, score, or checklist establishes feline separation anxiety.
Why a veterinary examination matters
Medical problems can look exactly like behavior problems. The Merck Veterinary Manual advises ruling out health causes before treating a behavior change as emotional. A litter-box change is especially important: urinary pain, kidney disease, diabetes, gastrointestinal disease, mobility problems, and litter-box access issues can all alter elimination. Vomiting, appetite loss, overgrooming, vocalization, and withdrawal also have medical explanations.

Seek urgent veterinary advice if the cat cannot keep food or water down, stops eating, has repeated vomiting, strains to urinate, produces little or no urine, is injured, or may have ingested a hazardous substance. Those situations require medical triage rather than behavior training.
What you can do at home while assessment is underway
Use gradual acclimation to absences
AAHA describes gradual desensitization: begin with an absence short enough that the cat remains calm, then increase the duration slowly. Return before distress starts whenever possible. If a two-minute absence causes panic, begin with a shorter step—such as briefly moving behind an interior door—and advance only when the cat remains settled. If a step triggers distress, reduce the next attempt rather than pushing through it.
- Identify the longest calm absence from your recordings.
- Practice a slightly shorter absence at a predictable time.
- Repeat until the cat remains relaxed across several sessions.
- Increase duration in small increments, changing only one variable at a time.
- Pause progression during illness, major household disruption, or a clear increase in distress.
Do not use a long forced absence as a test. Repeatedly exceeding the cat’s coping ability can make the pattern harder to interpret and may intensify distress.
Make the environment predictable
- Keep feeding, play, sleep, and departure routines reasonably consistent.
- Provide a comfortable resting area with access to water and a clean litter box.
- Offer safe elevated perches or hiding places if the cat normally uses them.
- Remove hazards that could cause injury during climbing, pacing, or escape attempts.
- Use quiet departures and returns rather than dramatic rituals.
AAHA also recommends mental stimulation, including interactive puzzle toys or treat-dispensing toys. Offer them when you are present first so you know the cat can use them safely. Enrichment may support calm behavior, but no particular toy is established as a cure for separation anxiety.

Be cautious with confinement
A crate or closed room is not automatically calming. Confinement can worsen distress in some pets, particularly if the cat scratches, pants, vocalizes continuously, or tries to escape. Use only an area the cat already tolerates and discuss a confinement plan with your veterinarian if the cat shows panic.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When professional help is needed
Contact a veterinarian when behavior is new, persistent, worsening, or interfering with eating, elimination, rest, or safety. Ask whether referral to a certified veterinary behaviorist is appropriate when the pattern is severe, complicated, or not improving with gradual acclimation and environmental changes.
Professional help is especially important when you see:
- Self-injury, broken claws, damaged teeth, or repeated escape attempts
- Inability to eat, drink, rest, or settle during absences
- Repeated vomiting or significant appetite change
- Urination or defecation outside the litter box
- Distress that persists despite shorter, gradual absences
- Multiple possible causes, such as pain, household conflict, or major routine changes
A veterinarian may combine medical treatment, behavior modification, environmental changes, and referral. Medication is an individual veterinary decision; it should not be started from an internet checklist or treated as a guaranteed solution. The University of Illinois advises owners who have exhausted other approaches to speak with a veterinarian or veterinary behaviorist about whether medication could support a broader plan.

Assuming house-soiling is emotional
New elimination outside the box requires medical and litter-box assessment. Punishment can increase fear and does not identify the cause.
Using one camera clip as proof
A short clip may miss later settling, a noise trigger, or a health symptom. Repeated recordings and a timeline are more informative.
Increasing absences too quickly
Training works below the cat’s distress threshold. If the cat repeatedly panics, shorten the practice interval and obtain veterinary guidance.
Buying a product instead of assessing the cat
Puzzle feeders can provide enrichment, but supplements, pheromone products, toys, and medication are not guaranteed treatments. Use them only as part of a plan suited to the individual cat.
What “missing you” can look like without being a disorder
A cat may wait near the door, seek contact when you return, or follow you more closely after an absence and still be functioning normally. If the cat resumes eating, drinking, resting, grooming, playing, and litter-box use, and the behavior is brief and stable, attachment is a more plausible explanation than severe separation-related distress. Continue observing if the pattern changes, because a previously calm cat can develop a problem after illness, relocation, loss of a companion, or a major schedule change.
Quick Recap
A concise action plan
- Observe before labeling. Separate reunion behavior from what occurs during the absence.
- Record the pattern. Use safe video when possible and document onset, duration, frequency, and recent changes.
- Arrange a veterinary check. Do this for new or persistent behavior, especially litter-box changes, appetite loss, vomiting, or self-injury.
- Reduce the difficulty. Practice absences short enough for the cat to remain calm and increase gradually.
- Improve predictability and enrichment. Maintain routine, offer safe resting areas, and use interactive food or play activities the cat already handles safely.
- Escalate when needed. Ask about a veterinary behaviorist or broader treatment plan if distress continues or threatens welfare.
