Look at your cat’s whole posture and what it does next—not just its tail, pupils, or one swat. Loose, alert movement and a voluntary return to the interaction can fit play. Tension, withdrawal, flattened ears, or escalating warnings mean pause and give your cat space. If the signs are mixed, stop briefly and let your cat decide whether to re-engage.
How to read your cat’s signals
Cat play can include stalking, chasing, pouncing, swatting, and biting. Those actions can resemble hunting or aggression, so the action alone does not tell you whether your cat wants the game to continue. Consider the animal, the situation, and the environment together, as the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists’ feline body-language guidance advises.

These are clues, not a diagnostic checklist. Tail movement and pupil size can occur with excitement as well as agitation. The Merck Veterinary Manual describes defensive body language that can include ears back, a crouched posture, tense limbs tucked close to the body, and weight shifted back. Read those signs in combination and in context.
When to stop and give your cat space
Pause if your cat becomes tense, crouches or tucks itself in, turns or flattens its ears, pulls its whiskers back, or tries to get away. Hissing, growling, and increasingly forceful swats or bites are further reasons not to continue. One sign may be ambiguous; several appearing together, especially with withdrawal, make stopping the safer choice.

Do not keep petting, chasing, or handling a cat that is signaling it wants a break. As the American Animal Hospital Association’s feline behavior and environmental-needs guidance puts it: “The cat must have a way to tell people to ‘please stop’ or ‘I need a break.’”
How to redirect rough play safely
- Put a toy between your cat and your hands. Use an interactive wand or teaser toy so your cat can chase and bite the toy rather than your skin.
- Pause when play escalates. Stop touching or pursuing the cat and allow it to move away.
- End the session if your cat stays wound up. Do not punish, grab, or try to soothe it with more contact during a play-aggression episode.
- Resume only by invitation. Wait until your cat has relaxed and voluntarily approaches or engages; then use a toy to channel the play.
Cornell Feline Health Center guidance recommends redirecting play aggression with an object kept away from your hands and advises against physically punishing or touching a cat during an episode. A toy is a safer outlet, not a reason to continue if your cat is still distressed.

When a veterinarian should assess the behavior
Contact a veterinarian if this behavior is new, persistent, difficult to manage, or accompanied by a painful reaction to touch or other signs of illness. Pain can contribute to aggression, so do not assume a sudden change is simply a play-style issue. UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine guidance advises veterinary contact when a kitten reacts painfully to touch or shows other medical signs. If aggression remains unmanageable, ask your veterinarian whether a veterinary behaviorist can help.
