Is Exercise Safe for a Dog With Arthritis?

Exercise is often appropriate for dogs with arthritis when it is controlled and low-impact. Learn how to start gently, monitor stiffness, and adapt the plan with your veterinarian.

Usually, yes. Many dogs with osteoarthritis benefit from regular, controlled, low-impact movement, but the right activity and amount depend on the individual dog. Favor leash walks and other gentle exercise; limit running and jumping, and ask your veterinarian to tailor a plan if your dog has significant pain, an uncertain diagnosis, or worsening symptoms.

Why exercise can help—and when it needs limits

Arthritis does not automatically mean a dog should stop moving. Appropriate activity can help maintain muscle strength, mobility, and general conditioning. Too much or too forceful activity, however, can aggravate pain and inflammation. The American College of Veterinary Surgeons recommends replacing high-impact activities such as running and jumping with controlled movement, such as leash walks. ACVS guidance on osteoarthritis in dogs and VCA’s exercise guidance both emphasize adapting activity to the dog.

Which activities are usually better choices?

Activity Why it may fit How to approach it
Leash walking Allows controlled, low-impact movement on land. Use a comfortable pace and distance your dog tolerates; ask your veterinarian about suitable duration and surfaces.
Swimming Can provide low-impact conditioning. Discuss suitability with your veterinarian, especially if your dog is uncomfortable or unfamiliar with swimming.
Underwater treadmill or therapeutic exercises Can be part of a rehabilitation program tailored to the dog. Ask your veterinarian whether referral to a veterinary rehabilitation professional is appropriate.
Running and jumping These are high-impact activities that may increase inflammation and pain. Limit them and favor controlled alternatives.

There is no single best activity for every dog. The choice depends on comfort, tolerance, affected joints, fitness, and other health conditions. Cornell’s osteoarthritis guidance also describes rehabilitation options such as therapeutic exercise, swimming, and underwater treadmills.

How to start and adjust a walking routine

If your dog is not already exercising regularly, begin modestly and watch how it responds. VCA gives 10-minute walks three times a day as an example starting point—not a universal prescription. If stiffness does not increase, VCA says the duration can be increased weekly. Your veterinarian can recommend a pace, surface, and schedule suited to your dog.

Specifically designed for dogs with hip dysplasia, arthritis, anterior cruciate ligament injury, intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), hip problems, unstable standing, and those in need of rehabilitation. It provides assistance in daily life, such as helping dogs climb up and down stairs, use the bathroom, and get in and out of cars.
  • Easy to Use - You can put this lift harness on your dog in just 1 minute. The wearing steps are simple and easy to understand, no complicated operations required, so even first-time users can get the hang of it quickly.
  • Bathroom Assistance - When your dog needs to defecate or urinate, this support sling provides stable support for the dog's rear legs, allowing the dog to use the bathroom without taking off the harness. Meanwhile, it also provides dual support for both the front and rear legs of the dog, making it easier for the dog to use the bathroom.
  • Reflective Material - All the straps of the harness are equipped with reflective strips. In low-light environments or at night, they can effectively improve the visibility of the dog, making the dog's night activities safer and reducing the risk of accidents.
  • 24-Hour Wearable - Made of skin-friendly material, it is lightweight, soft and breathable, which won't cause discomfort to the dog. It can be washed with water and dried, making daily cleaning and maintenance convenient, and suitable for the dog to wear all day long.
  1. Ask for an individualized plan. Discuss the dog’s pain, affected joints, fitness, and any other health conditions with your veterinarian, particularly before starting if symptoms are significant or the diagnosis is uncertain.
  2. Begin with short, controlled activity. Keep walks calm and manageable rather than encouraging bursts of speed, rough play, or jumping.
  3. Check your dog’s response. Pay attention to stiffness, gait, willingness to move, and ease of rising after activity.
  4. Increase gradually only if tolerated. If the dog becomes stiffer or otherwise worsens, do not continue increasing activity; contact your veterinarian.

What else belongs in an arthritis plan?

Exercise is one part of osteoarthritis care. Depending on the dog, a veterinarian may also address weight control, pain management, rehabilitation, and changes at home. ACVS identifies maintaining a slender body weight as an important part of management. Cornell lists non-slip rugs and ramps as possible home modifications to improve access and mobility; these are not arthritis treatments or exercise prescriptions.

When to contact your veterinarian

Arrange a veterinary review if your dog’s overall condition worsens or the proposed activity makes it noticeably stiffer. Worsening may point to another cause for the symptoms or a need to reassess pain treatment. Contact your veterinarian as well if you notice lameness or gait changes, reluctance to walk or exercise, difficulty getting up, or difficulty with stairs or jumping—signs Cornell lists among possible osteoarthritis symptoms.
