Look at your dog’s whole body and the situation—not one gesture. A relaxed dog that chooses to approach may be comfortable in that moment, but no posture, tail wag, or period of quiet proves that a dog is safe to leave with a baby. If your dog turns away, stiffens, tries to move out of reach, growls, or seems worried, calmly end the interaction and create space.
What possible comfort looks like
A dog who appears at ease may have a loose, relaxed posture and calmly approach the baby of their own accord. Keep any contact brief and controlled. Let the dog investigate only if they choose to, and make sure they can move away whenever they want.

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and ASPCA identify behaviors that can indicate discomfort or worry. If you notice any of these, calmly end the interaction:

- Turning away or trying to move out of reach
- Stiffening or becoming tense
- Growling
- Yawning, ears held back, or raising a paw—signals that can indicate worry
Move the baby away or guide the dog to a separate place without cornering them or forcing contact. A dog should be able to retreat without having to pass close to the baby.
Why one signal cannot tell you the whole story
Dogs differ in how they express themselves, and body language depends on the situation. A wagging tail can mean different things in different dogs, so wagging by itself does not show that a dog welcomes contact. Stillness or apparent tolerance is not proof of comfort either. Consider the dog’s posture, movement, and circumstances together; a single cue cannot establish how a dog feels.

How to make interactions safer
Keep supervision active
Never leave a baby or small child alone with a dog, including the family dog. Supervision means an adult is actively present and watching—not relying on a camera, a sleeping adult, or the assumption that the dog is accustomed to the baby. If you cannot supervise directly, separate them with a closed door or a suitable gate. A barrier helps manage access; it does not replace adult supervision.

Protect the dog’s space and belongings
Keep the baby away from the dog’s food, toys, chews, resting place, and personal space. ASPCA notes that guarding food, toys, or chews can contribute to aggressive responses. Babies cannot reliably recognize or respond to a dog’s warnings, so adults must prevent situations that put the baby close to these potential triggers.

Let the dog choose whether to approach
Do not carry or lure the dog toward the baby, hold the dog in place, or otherwise force an interaction. Give the dog room to leave. ASPCA recommends teaching the dog to move away; calmly rewarding relaxed behavior can support that choice without requiring the dog to stay near the baby.
What to do if your dog growls or shows aggression
Treat a growl or other warning as a reason to create distance, not as behavior to punish. ASPCA cautions that punishing growling, snapping, or other warnings may suppress the warning without making the dog comfortable. Separate the baby and dog calmly, then keep them apart while you seek guidance.

If your dog is aggressive toward the baby or shows repeated fear around them, maintain separation and consult a qualified dog behavior professional. General body-language guidance cannot assess an individual dog or provide a tailored behavior plan.

Use a barrier when an adult cannot actively supervise or when the dog needs a protected place to retreat. ASPCA specifically suggests a baby gate to block a dog’s access to the baby’s room if the dog might enter the crib area. Choose a separation arrangement that fully prevents unsupervised access and gives the dog a safe place away from the baby; a gate is an aid to separation, not a substitute for watching them together.

What this guidance can—and cannot—tell you
Body language is individual and situation-dependent. These signs can help you notice when to pause, but they cannot diagnose a dog’s emotional state from a single gesture, photograph, or brief description, and they cannot guarantee future behavior. The AVMA’s National Dog Bite Prevention Week press release quotes its president, Dr. Michael Q. Bailey: “Dogs enrich our lives in countless ways, especially for children, but it’s important to remember that any dog can bite, and kids can be particularly vulnerable.”
