Red, itchy, swollen, or stained paws can come from yeast, bacteria, allergies, irritation, or more than one problem at once. Appearance and licking alone cannot reliably identify the cause. A veterinarian can examine the paws and use skin tests—especially cytology—to look for infection and decide whether additional investigation is needed.
Why paw symptoms don’t reveal the cause
Dogs with different paw conditions can show the same signs: redness, itching, licking, swelling, hair loss, or discolored fur. Malassezia yeast normally lives on skin; when it increases in affected areas, it can contribute to inflammation and itch. But yeast often appears alongside allergic skin disease or another underlying problem, so detecting yeast does not necessarily mean it is the only cause. Bacteria can also develop secondarily and add discomfort.
Brown staining near the claws or between the toes, greasy or scaly skin, and persistent licking may raise suspicion of yeast, but none confirms it. Odor, a photograph, or the color of the fur cannot reliably distinguish yeast from allergy, bacterial infection, or irritation. The World Association for Veterinary Dermatology consensus guideline recommends cytology or quantitative culture to assess skin yeast populations; appearance alone is not a substitute.
Clues that can help frame the possibilities
These patterns are useful topics to discuss with a veterinarian, not a checklist for diagnosing a dog at home. Conditions may overlap or coexist.

| Possible cause | Clues that may raise suspicion | What can help distinguish it |
|---|---|---|
| Malassezia yeast | Itch, redness, greasy or scaly skin, and brown staining near claws or between toes; allergy may be present too. | Cytology of affected skin. Signs alone do not confirm yeast. |
| Bacterial infection | Inflamed or swollen skin; deeper disease may be painful and can involve nodules, ulcers, or discharge. | Cytology can help identify bacteria. Culture and sensitivity may be appropriate for deep, recurrent, or previously treated infections. |
| Allergy | Itchy, inflamed paws; signs may be seasonal or occur elsewhere on the body. Allergy can trigger secondary yeast or bacterial infection. | History and examination, followed when appropriate by veterinarian-directed contact avoidance or a food trial. Infection may need to be controlled enough to interpret the results. |
| Irritation, contact reaction, or injury | Symptoms following exposure to a substance, trauma, hard-surface exercise, clipper burn, or a possible splinter. The underside of the paw may be affected. | Exposure history and physical examination; tests may still be needed to check for infection or mites. |
How a veterinarian investigates itchy or inflamed paws
Examination and history
The veterinarian considers how the problem began, possible exposures, whether one or several paws are affected, and whether signs recur. The examination may include the pads, spaces between the toes, claws, and other areas of skin. These details help distinguish a local injury or exposure from a broader skin problem, but they do not always settle the diagnosis by themselves.
Cytology and skin scraping
Cytology examines cells and microorganisms collected from affected skin and can help identify yeast, bacteria, and inflammatory cells. A skin scraping can help assess for Demodex mites, which may cause paw disease. In a 2025 article, veterinary dermatologist Rosanna Marsella recommends cytology and skin scraping for dogs with pododermatitis because infections and mites can present in different ways. See Marsella’s diagnostic overview.

Further tests when needed
For deep, recurrent, or previously treated infections, the veterinarian may recommend culture and sensitivity testing to help guide treatment. Depending on the presentation, further evaluation may include allergy trials, biopsy, or other tests. The choice depends on the findings; not every dog needs every test.
When to arrange veterinary care
Contact a veterinarian if paw signs persist, worsen, or keep returning. Arrange an assessment promptly for marked swelling, pain, ulcers, or discharge. Persistent, painful, ulcerated, swollen, or one-sided paw disease can have causes beyond a routine surface infection; other possibilities include mites and, less commonly, immune-mediated, metabolic, or neoplastic conditions.

Repeatedly treating the paws at home without knowing the cause can miss an underlying allergy, injury, foreign body, or a deeper infection. If a dog has walked through a suspected irritant or injured a paw, tell the veterinarian what happened and when symptoms appeared.

Veterinarians may use topical washes, soaks, or wipes for some secondary infections; the appropriate care depends on the diagnosis and the dog’s situation. The University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine describes topical options including wipes and shampoos, while VCA discusses topical care for secondary infections. Neither a wipe nor a visible change in the paws establishes the cause. Ask a veterinarian before starting medicated products; no particular brand or formulation is established as appropriate for every dog. See the University of Illinois overview of Malassezia dermatitis and VCA’s overview of pododermatitis.
