Update the microchip registry, report the suspected theft to the appropriate local authorities, and refresh your dog’s visible identification. A microchip is a permanent identification number, not a tracker: a scanner must read it, and a registry must have your current contact details for it to help reunite you with your dog.
Start by locating the chip number or having a veterinarian or shelter scan your dog. In the United States, use the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) Microchip Registry Lookup Tool to identify the registry connected with a 9-, 10-, or 15-digit number, then contact that registry directly. If you are in England or Wales, report a suspected stolen dog to the police and follow the related council and database steps described below. Elsewhere, use your own police, animal-control, or local-authority procedure.

What to do first after a break-in
Before changing records, decide whether your dog is missing, has been recovered, or was never physically taken but may be at risk. The same identification checks help in all three situations.
- Save recent, clear photographs showing your dog’s face, body markings, coat pattern, scars, and any distinctive features.
- Gather adoption or purchase documents, veterinary records, vaccination paperwork, insurance documents, and any earlier microchip confirmation.
- Write down the date and approximate time of the break-in, the last confirmed location, and identifying details such as breed, sex, color, age, and distinguishing marks.
- If a crime has been reported, keep the police or case reference number with the identification records.
Do not publish your home address, full personal details, or information that could compromise an investigation. Give authorities and the registry what they need, but limit public notices to a safe phone or email contact and the dog’s identifying information.

Make a same-day action list
Work in a written sequence so that an urgent call does not cause you to overlook a separate record. A practical order is:
- Secure the property and preserve relevant camera footage, messages, and witness information in their original form.
- Call the police or other appropriate authority and obtain a report or case reference.
- Locate the chip number in your files or arrange a scan if the dog is with you.
- Use the appropriate registry lookup service and contact every registry that appears.
- Confirm your phone, email, address, and alternate contact with the registry.
- Ask how the provider records a missing or stolen status and request written confirmation.
- Replace or update the collar tag and prepare a controlled public notice with photographs.
Record the date, time, department or registry, person contacted, and any promised follow-up after every call. This log prevents duplicate reports and gives an investigator a clear history.
Understand what a microchip can—and cannot—do
A pet microchip contains a unique identification number. Your phone number, email address, and home address are stored in a registry record linked to that number; they are not stored on the chip itself. A scanner has to read the number, and someone then has to consult the relevant registry.
Recommended Free Tools
That means a microchip does not transmit a location, send an alert when a dog leaves home, or identify a dog automatically. It cannot replace a missing-dog report, a collar tag, or an investigation. AAHA describes microchips as a permanent form of identification, but their usefulness depends on accurate registry data and a finder having access to a scanner.
Step 1: Find your dog’s microchip number
Check your existing paperwork
Look through adoption contracts, veterinary invoices, vaccination certificates, spay or neuter records, insurance documents, and prior registry emails. The number may be printed as a 9-, 10-, or 15-digit sequence. Compare documents carefully; a pet can have more than one chip, especially if its history is unknown.
Have the dog scanned if the number is missing
Ask a veterinarian, animal shelter, or other qualified animal-care facility to scan the dog. The scanner retrieves the unique number without surgery or a new implantation. Ask the clinic to write the complete number exactly as displayed and to check the whole body according to its normal scanning procedure, because a chip can migrate from its original implantation area.
If the dog was recovered after being missing, request a scan even if you believe you know the number. Matching the scan to your paperwork helps detect transcription errors or an unexpected second chip.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Keep a photograph or written copy of the scanner display when the facility permits it. Entering one wrong digit can send you to the wrong registry or make a valid record appear to be missing. Do not implant another chip merely because a document is unavailable; first ask a professional to scan and explain the options.
Step 2: Identify the registry that holds the record
United States: use the AAHA lookup tool
The United States does not have one centralized microchip registry. Different registries maintain their own records. Enter the complete chip number into AAHA’s Microchip Registry Lookup Tool. The tool can list the registry or registries associated with that number.
The lookup tool is a directory, not an account-management page. It does not reveal the owner’s contact details and does not let you edit the record. Use the result to identify whom to contact, then follow that registry’s own update process.

If more than one registry appears
Contact each listed registry and ask whether it has an active record for the chip. Multiple entries can occur when a number has been registered with more than one provider or when records have not been synchronized. Confirm which record contains your current information and ask each provider how it handles duplicate or outdated entries.
If the lookup returns no useful result
Recheck every digit, including leading zeroes, and ask the veterinary clinic to rescan. A scanner display or handwritten transcription can be misread. If the number is correct but no registry appears, ask the veterinarian or shelter where the chip was implanted or previously registered, and contact registries directly for guidance. Registry coverage and procedures vary by provider.
Step 3: Update the registry record
Once you know the registry, use its current phone, email, or online account process. Have the chip number and proof of ownership or adoption available if requested. Registry requirements and any fees are provider-specific and can change, so follow the instructions given by that registry.
Verify every contact field
Confirm the following rather than assuming an old record is still correct:
- Your legal or preferred owner name, spelled correctly.
- A mobile phone number that you answer or check regularly.
- An email address you can access now.
- Your current physical address, including apartment or unit information where relevant.
- The dog’s name, sex, breed description, color, and distinguishing marks.
Ask whether the registry permits a second owner or alternate contact. Add a trusted person who can answer promptly if you are unreachable, and tell that person that the registry has listed them.

Explain that the dog is missing after a suspected theft or break-in. Ask whether the registry can flag the record as missing, stolen, or otherwise urgent, and what documentation it needs. A theft-status flag is not standardized: some providers may have a dedicated process while others may simply add a note or direct you to local authorities.
Request written confirmation of the update, such as an email or reference number. Check that the confirmation shows the correct chip number and your current contact details. Keep it with your police or case reference.
What to do if you cannot access the old account
Contact the registry’s support team rather than creating a second record with conflicting information. Explain that you are the current owner and ask what identity or ownership documents are accepted. Keep copies of anything you submit and note the date, method, and name or reference number associated with the contact.
If the dog changed hands before the break-in, ask the registry how to document the transfer. Do not guess at a former owner’s information or delete a record without instructions. A provider may require adoption, purchase, licensing, or veterinary documents before changing the account.

Ask about costs and processing time
There is no single nationwide fee or turnaround time. Some providers may offer online updates, while others may require support contact or proof review. Ask whether an update, duplicate account review, ownership change, or replacement tag carries a charge, and whether the theft notation is treated differently. Keep the payment receipt or confirmation with your records, but do not delay a police report while waiting for a registry response.

Step 4: Report the suspected theft to local authorities
England and Wales
GOV.UK advises owners who believe a dog was stolen to report it to the police. Metropolitan Police guidance also recommends recording the crime reference number, informing the local council and the microchip database, and circulating identifying photographs through appropriate local channels.
Those instructions are specific to England and Wales and do not establish a universal procedure. The council involved may depend on where the theft occurred or where the dog is registered. Ask the responding police service which council, animal-welfare service, or other authority should receive the report.
Other countries and regions
Police, animal-control, and council responsibilities differ by jurisdiction. In the United States, contact the police department serving the location of the break-in and ask whether a stolen-pet report, property-crime report, or another category is used. Also ask local animal control or the relevant municipal shelter how to enter the dog into its lost-and-found system. Follow the process where you live rather than copying England and Wales terminology.
Give authorities a usable identification packet
Provide the chip number, registry name and confirmation, current photographs, veterinary or adoption documents, your contact details, and the date and location of the break-in. If you have doorbell-camera footage, witness information, vehicle details, or a distinctive collar description, preserve the original files and give copies through the channel the investigator specifies.
Step 5: Refresh visible identification
Fit a collar tag with a current phone number when wearing a collar is appropriate and safe for your dog. A finder can read a tag immediately without a scanner, so it complements the microchip rather than replacing it. Check that the engraving is legible, the ring is secure, and the number still reaches you.
A collar or tag can be lost or removed. That is why the registry update remains necessary even when a tag is present. If your dog uses a breakaway collar for safety, make sure the visible identification plan still works for the situations in which the collar may come off.
Use a phone number that can accept calls from an unfamiliar person, and decide in advance whether you want a text, voicemail, or email as the first contact. Avoid printing your home address on a public tag. If the dog has medical needs, ask a veterinarian whether a short medical alert on the tag is appropriate without disclosing unnecessary personal information.

| Identification method | What it does | Main limitation | Your action after a break-in |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microchip and registry | A scanner reads a unique number, and the registry links that number to owner contact details. | It does not transmit location. A person must scan the dog and consult a registry. | Find the number, update the registry, and ask a veterinarian or shelter to scan if the number is unknown. |
| Collar ID tag | Displays contact information that a finder can read immediately. | The collar or tag can be absent, damaged, or removed. | Replace or re-engrave the tag and verify the phone number. |
| Optional GPS tracker | A separate device may provide location functions while it is worn, powered, and operating. | It is not the microchip and cannot correct stale registry information. It may not be on the dog after a theft. | Treat it as an optional, separate tool; still update the registry and visible ID. |
A GPS subscription, battery, coverage area, and device attachment are separate practical considerations. None changes the need for a current registry record. If a tracker was fitted before the break-in, give its account information to investigators only through a secure channel and do not assume a last recorded location proves where the dog currently is.
Prepare safe public notices
Use the same clear photographs and identifying description supplied to authorities, but remove details that could expose your home or weaken an investigation. State the general area, date last seen, dog’s name, color, sex, distinguishing marks, and a safe phone or email contact. Ask the police or investigator whether certain details should be withheld so that genuine sightings can be distinguished from false claims.
Be cautious with requests for money, ownership documents, or a meeting location from strangers. Keep original files, compare any claimed chip number with your records, and involve the reporting authority before arranging a handover. Do not publish a complete identity document, registry login, or full address.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming the chip itself contains your phone number
It does not. The chip stores an identification number; the registry stores the contact record. Updating one without the other cannot work.
Stopping after the AAHA lookup
The lookup identifies a registry but does not edit your account or display owner details. Contact the listed registry directly and obtain confirmation.
Relying on one old phone number
Use a phone, email, and address that are all current, and add an alternate contact if allowed. A single disconnected number can delay a reunion.
Treating a GPS device as a theft solution
A GPS device is separate from the implanted chip and only works while worn and operating. It cannot update a registry or locate a dog that no longer has the device.
Assuming police and council rules are identical everywhere
The police and council steps cited for England and Wales are not universal. Ask your own local authorities which report category and animal database they use.
Posting too much personal information
Share identifying details with investigators and the registry, but keep public notices limited to a safe contact route and information that helps identify the dog.

How to keep the record current going forward
Update the registry whenever you move, change phone numbers, change email providers, transfer ownership, or add or remove an alternate contact. Ask your veterinarian to scan the chip during routine visits and compare the displayed number with your saved record. Replace a worn or unreadable collar tag promptly. These small checks keep the permanent identifier, registry record, and visible ID working together if your dog ever goes missing again.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I update my dog’s microchip information?
Find the complete chip number, identify the registry that holds it, and contact that registry directly. Verify your name, phone, email, address, dog description, and alternate contact, then request written confirmation. The AAHA lookup tool helps identify a registry but does not edit records.
How do I find the registry for my dog’s microchip?
In the United States, enter the 9-, 10-, or 15-digit number into AAHA’s Microchip Registry Lookup Tool. It may list one or more registries. Contact each listed provider to confirm its record and update process.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat if I do not know my dog’s chip number?
Ask a veterinarian, shelter, or qualified animal-care facility to scan the dog. Have the complete number written down exactly as displayed and compare it with any paperwork you have.
Can a microchip locate my stolen dog?
No. A microchip stores a unique identification number and does not transmit location. A scanner must read it, and the registry must contain current contact details. A GPS device is separate and only works while worn, powered, and operating.
Who do I tell if my dog was stolen?
Report the suspected theft to the police or other authority serving the location, then ask about animal-control, council, or shelter reporting. In England and Wales, GOV.UK advises reporting a stolen dog to police; local procedures elsewhere differ.
Is there a fee to update a microchip record?
Fees and processing requirements are provider-specific and can change. Ask the registry whether an update, ownership transfer, duplicate-record review, or theft notation costs anything before submitting payment.
Should I update the collar tag as well as the chip?
Yes. A current collar tag gives a finder an immediate phone number without a scanner, while the chip remains useful if the collar is missing or removed. Check the engraving, ring, and phone number.
What should I do after my dog is recovered?
Have a veterinarian or shelter scan the dog, notify the registry and the authority handling the report, ask how to remove any missing or stolen notation, inspect the collar and tag, and arrange a veterinary examination.
The Bottom Line
Find and verify the chip number, contact every relevant registry, update all owner and backup-contact details, and request confirmation. Report the suspected theft through your local process, refresh the collar tag, preserve ownership records, and keep public notices limited to safe identifying information. A microchip is permanent identification—not GPS—so accurate registry data and visible ID must work together.
