The normal package contains catappa and mulberry leaves, cholla wood, a coconut petal stem and alder cones, although Aquatic Arts says it may substitute similar items when particular leaves are unavailable. The seller describes these materials as decoration, grazing and shelter surfaces, food sources and tannin-producing botanicals, but those outcomes vary with the aquarium and are not independently established for this pack.
What the Botanical Combo Pack is
This is a physical assortment rather than a bottled additive or a measured water-treatment formula. Aquatic Arts positions it for aquariums containing shrimp and other invertebrates, and for blackwater-style displays in which natural leaves, wood and seed cones form part of the aquascape. The pieces break down at different rates, occupy different parts of the tank and can influence appearance and water chemistry in different ways.

The product page uses the phrase “They are perfect for invertebrates and blackwater setups.” That is the seller’s positioning, not a guarantee that every aquarium will obtain a particular pH, color, biofilm density or livestock result. Your water volume, buffering capacity, filtration, lighting, existing organics and the amount of botanical material all affect what you observe.

| Botanical | Usual quantity listed by Aquatic Arts | Role described by the seller |
|---|---|---|
| Catappa (Indian almond) leaves | Three full-size leaves, or seven mini leaves | Natural decoration, food source, biofilm and diatom surface, and shelter |
| Mulberry leaves | Three leaves | Natural decoration, food source, biofilm and diatom surface, and shelter |
| Cholla wood | One piece | Seller says it can lower and buffer pH |
| Coconut petal stem | One stem | Botanical structure and natural-looking cover in the mixed display |
| Alder cones | One portion | Seller says the cones release tannins that tint the water |
The quantities above describe the normal pack, not a permanent bill of materials. Aquatic Arts explicitly reserves the option to replace leaves or other botanical pieces with similar items when a named component is unavailable. Check the contents when the package arrives and treat any change as a change in the mix, not as a defect automatically. Substitution can alter how quickly the material softens, how much visible tint develops and how much structure the livestock receives.
What the components may contribute
Catappa and mulberry leaves
Aquatic Arts describes both leaf types as naturalistic decoration and as surfaces that can collect biofilm and diatoms. It also describes them as a food source and says they can provide shelter for fry and small shrimp, crabs, crayfish, snails and fish. In practice, a leaf is both an object in the aquascape and a temporary substrate that changes as it ages. Shrimp and snails may graze on growth that develops on the surface, but the seller does not quantify how much food a leaf supplies or how long any leaf remains intact.
The leaf count is small enough that you can place pieces deliberately rather than covering the entire floor. Lay one where you can watch livestock use it, or tuck it under wood to create a shaded edge. If you receive mini catappa leaves instead of full-size leaves, compare surface area rather than counting pieces as though they were equivalent.
Cholla wood
The product description presents cholla wood as a way to lower and buffer pH. That wording should be read as a seller claim about a botanical material, not as a predictable dosing rule. A cholla piece can also add holes and a three-dimensional surface that small animals may explore. Measure your aquarium’s parameters before and after adding it if pH stability matters, and do not assume that one piece will produce the same result in soft, hard, low-alkalinity and heavily buffered water.

Alder cones
Aquatic Arts says alder cones release tannins that tint aquarium water. The color can be part of a blackwater aesthetic, but the intensity depends on the cones, the water and the amount used. A lightly tinted tank and a visibly tea-colored tank are both possible outcomes of adding tannin-producing botanicals; the product page does not promise a specific shade or concentration.
Coconut petal stem
The coconut petal stem is the pack’s additional plant-derived structure. The listing identifies one stem but does not assign it a measured chemical effect or a feeding value. Use it primarily as a piece of natural-looking structure, and position it so it cannot trap livestock or block equipment.
Decide whether this mix fits your aquarium
Use the following questions before opening the packet:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Are you keeping invertebrates? The pack is marketed for shrimp, snails, crabs and crayfish as well as fish. Leaves and wood can add grazing and hiding surfaces, but they do not replace a complete feeding and shelter plan.
- Do you want a blackwater appearance? Alder cones and leaves may add tannin color. If you need clear water, introduce a very small amount first and monitor the visual change rather than adding the entire assortment at once.
- Is your pH tightly managed? Because the seller associates cholla with lowering and buffering pH, measure your baseline and recheck after introduction. Avoid treating the pack as a precision pH-control product.
- Can your livestock use botanical cover? Fry and small animals may benefit from additional surfaces, while an open layout may be preferable for a display focused on unobstructed viewing.
- Are substitutions acceptable? If you require a specific leaf or cone, a mixed pack with a substitution clause is less predictable than buying that item separately.
A cautious way to introduce the pack
Aquatic Arts’ page does not give one universal preparation or dose for every aquarium. The sequence below is a conservative way to add an assortment while retaining control; it is not an official pack-specific protocol.

- Record your starting conditions. Note aquarium volume, pH and any other parameters you normally track. Photograph the water and layout if appearance is important to you.
- Inventory the shipment. Identify each leaf, the wood, the coconut stem and the alder cones. Compare what arrived with the usual list, while allowing for the substitutions stated by Aquatic Arts.
- Inspect every piece. Remove loose packaging material and set aside anything that does not fit your tank or could obstruct an intake, heater or other equipment. Do not force a large piece into a small aquarium.
- Rinse with aquarium-safe water. A gentle rinse removes loose dust. Avoid soaps or household cleaners. If you choose to pre-soak a piece, use a separate clean container so you can observe the color released before it enters the display.
- Start with a fraction of the assortment. Add one leaf or a small amount of cone material first, especially in a small tank or one with sensitive livestock. Keep the remaining pieces available so you can adjust gradually.
- Place botanicals where you can monitor them. Keep leaves visible for observation and set wood or the coconut stem so water can circulate around it. Leave clear access to filters and heaters.
- Observe before adding more. Watch the water color, livestock behavior and the parameters you recorded. If the appearance or chemistry moves farther than intended, remove some material rather than adding more equipment or chemicals immediately.
- Add the remaining pieces only if the result suits your goal. A mixed pack does not have to be used in one installation. Saving part of it lets you fine-tune the visual effect and replace material as it breaks down.
Dosing: why a universal number is not available
The Botanical Combo Pack page does not publish a single dose tied to aquarium volume. That matters because the package combines several materials with different sizes and tannin release, and because aquariums differ in buffering and filtration.
For context, sera gives examples for its own products: one Catappa Leaves S leaf for 30 liters (8 US gallons), and one alder cone per 10 liters of aquarium water. Those figures are manufacturer guidance for sera’s named products. They are not a validated dosage for the Aquatic Arts mixed pack and should not be transferred automatically. If you use them as a rough comparison, keep the product difference explicit and begin below any amount that could change your tank abruptly.
Using botanicals mainly for appearance
Some aquarists want the texture of leaves and cones without turning the water strongly yellow or brown. No guaranteed color-control routine appears on the pack page, so use an incremental approach:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Add one visually important piece first instead of the whole assortment.
- Pre-soak a leaf, cone or wood piece in a separate container and observe the water it releases before deciding whether it belongs in the display.
- Use removable pieces so you can reduce the tint quickly if it exceeds your preferred look.
- Take a reference photograph under the same lighting each time; color perception changes with light intensity and background.
- Do not assume clear water means no tannins or that brown water indicates a livestock problem. Judge the result against your stated aesthetic and your measured parameters.
If you actually want blackwater coloration, the same gradual method prevents an accidental overcorrection. Add material in stages and allow each stage to become part of the display before deciding on the next one.

How to compare this pack with other options
Aquatic Arts lists individual botanicals in its broader collection and also lists a separate Sulawesi shrimp botanical pack with a different mix. The useful comparison is not the package name; it is what each option lets you control.
| Comparison question | Botanical Combo Pack | Separate items or another mix |
|---|---|---|
| Intended use | General invertebrate and blackwater positioning | May be selected for a more specialized shrimp setup or a specific display goal |
| Ingredient control | Convenient assortment, with possible substitutions | Buying individual leaves, cones or wood gives direct control over the pieces selected |
| Quantity control | Arrives as the listed assortment rather than a tank-specific dose | You can choose how many individual pieces to purchase and add |
| Appearance and chemistry | Combined effects of leaves, wood and cones; exact tint or pH change is not guaranteed | Fewer variables when you add one botanical type at a time, though outcomes still depend on the aquarium |
Choose the combo when variety and convenience matter more than exact repeatability. Choose individual items when you already know which leaf, cone or wood form you want, or when substitutions would undermine your plan. The existence of another pack does not establish that it is safer or more effective; compare its actual component list and your livestock requirements.
Monitoring after introduction
Water color changes faster than expected
Remove some leaves or cones and use the remaining pieces later. Because alder cones are specifically described as tannin-releasing, they are the first component to review when the tint is stronger than intended. Keep your lighting and viewing conditions consistent before deciding that the change is unacceptable.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →pH moves outside your target
Recheck the measurement and compare it with your baseline. Remove part of the botanical load if the direction or magnitude is unsuitable, and do not add more cholla simply because the product description mentions buffering. The seller does not provide a guaranteed pH shift for a particular aquarium.

Livestock ignores the botanicals
The seller describes possible shelter and grazing surfaces, not required behavior. Give the pieces time to become part of the layout, but do not rely on them as the sole food or hiding provision for fry, shrimp, snails, crabs, crayfish or fish.
The received mix differs from the list
Re-read the substitution statement and identify the replacement before using it. If a specific ingredient is essential to your setup, contact the retailer rather than assuming the package is identical to the normal configuration.
What is established, and what is not
The established information is the seller’s normal component list, its substitution policy and its descriptions of intended uses. The available material does not include an independent trial of this particular combination, a measured tank-by-tank result, or a universal application dose. It also does not establish that the pack prevents disease, guarantees livestock health, produces a specific pH value or creates a particular tannin concentration.
Those limits do not make the product unusable; they define how to use it responsibly. Treat the pack as adjustable décor and habitat material, introduce it in stages, and let your own aquarium measurements determine whether to keep, add or remove pieces.
Checks before purchase
- Confirm that the current product page still shows the assortment you expect.
- Accept that leaves or other botanicals may be substituted.
- Decide whether your tank can accommodate the full-size wood and stem.
- Plan where you will place leaves and cones without blocking equipment.
- Have a way to monitor the parameters that matter to your livestock.
- If you need an exact ingredient, compare individual botanicals instead of relying on a mixed pack.
Bottom line
The Aquatic Arts Botanical Combo Pack is best understood as a flexible starter assortment for natural-looking freshwater invertebrate and blackwater displays. Its usual catappa and mulberry leaves, cholla wood, coconut petal stem and alder cones can add texture, potential grazing surfaces, cover and tannin coloration, according to Aquatic Arts’ descriptions. Because substitutions are allowed and no pack-specific dose or independent outcome is established, add the material gradually and make your aquarium’s measurements and visual goal—not the package count alone—the basis for the final setup.
