For light dirt, brush your cat or wipe the coat with a soft cloth dampened with plain water; a healthy adult cat usually does not need a bath. If a full routine bath is necessary, wait until you have shampoo formulated for cats rather than using human, baby, or dog shampoo. Mild liquid dish soap is described as an option only for removing oily or potentially toxic residue—not as a routine shampoo substitute. If your cat may have contacted or swallowed a toxin, contact a veterinarian promptly.
Choose the cleaning method by what is on your cat
| Situation | What to do | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Dust or light dirt | Brush the coat first; if needed, wipe with a soft cloth dampened with plain water. | Keep water and residue away from the face and eyes. Cats Protection and the ASPCA describe brushing or wiping as alternatives for cats that dislike washing. |
| Sticky, very dirty, or malodorous coat, with no suspected toxin exposure | If a bath is genuinely needed, use shampoo formulated for cats. Ask your veterinarian about the right product if the cat has a skin problem or needs frequent bathing. | Do not substitute human, baby, or dog shampoo. VCA Animal Hospitals recommends cat-specific shampoo for routine bathing. |
| Oily or potentially toxic substance on fur | Protect yourself from the substance, remove a contaminated collar if present, and contact a veterinary professional promptly if toxicity or ingestion is possible. Mild liquid dish soap—not dishwasher detergent—is described in decontamination guidance for oily or chemical residue; rinse thoroughly. | This is a decontamination measure, not a general-purpose bath. Get substance-specific advice and do not attempt a bath if handling is unsafe. See the ASPCA Poison Control guidance and VCA’s toxic-hazards guidance. |
| Known or suspected poisoning, or possible licking or swallowing | Contact a veterinarian or poison-control professional promptly. | Bathing alone may not address the risk; recommendations depend on the substance. ASPCA Poison Control advises professional guidance after exposure. |
Why household shampoos are not safe routine substitutes
Human and baby shampoo
Do not use human shampoo, including baby shampoo, for a routine cat bath. VCA explains that cat skin differs from human skin in thickness and pH, and advises using shampoo formulated for cats. For a cat that needs a routine bath, VCA identifies hypoallergenic, fragrance-free cat shampoo as a suitable option and recommends asking a veterinarian which product is best: VCA’s grooming and coat-care guidance.
Dog shampoo
Do not casually use dog shampoo on a cat. Cats Protection warns that cats can be more sensitive to some chemicals, oils, and fragrances in dog shampoos; some dog flea products contain permethrin, which is toxic to cats. Use a cat-formulated product unless your veterinarian directs otherwise: Cats Protection’s bathing advice.
Dish soap
Mild liquid dish soap has a narrow role in removing oily or chemical contamination from fur. ASPCA Poison Control says not to use dishwasher detergent and advises thorough rinsing; repeated bathing can dry or irritate the skin. For routine grooming, use cat shampoo when a bath is needed, not dish soap. If you suspect a hazardous exposure, seek professional advice rather than assuming a wash is enough: ASPCA Poison Control.
#1 Best Overall
- REDUCES DANDER AND FLAKING BETWEEN BATHS: Each wipe lifts loose dander and skin flakes from the coat surface during grooming, helping manage allergen levels and visible flaking without requiring a full water bath.
- COLLOIDAL OAT FLOUR SOOTHES DRY SKIN: Colloidal oat flour is a dermatologist-recognized skin-soothing ingredient; included in these wipes to help calm dry, irritated feline skin and support a softer, more comfortable coat.
- ALOE HELPS CONDITION AND HYDRATE COAT: Aloe provides additional moisture to the coat and skin during wiping, supporting hydration on cats prone to dryness, flakiness, or seasonal skin sensitivity between bathing sessions.
- FRAGRANCE-FREE FOR FELINE SENSITIVITY: Unscented formula avoids artificial fragrances that cats may find irritating; suitable for households with scent-sensitive cats, multi-cat homes, and cats used near allergy-prone family members.
- PH BALANCED FOR FELINE SKIN: Formulated with a pH suited to cats rather than humans or dogs, helping avoid over-drying and maintaining the skin barrier during regular between-bath grooming and dander management routines.
How to give a necessary bath safely
- Prepare the space. Choose a warm room and have towels ready. Brush the coat beforehand and use a non-slip mat in the sink or tub. A cup or pitcher can be less distressing than a sprayer. These steps are recommended by the ASPCA and VCA.
- Use lukewarm water and cat-formulated shampoo. Wet and wash the coat gently, keeping water and product away from the eyes, ears, and nose. Do not improvise with household cleaners or personal-care products.
- Rinse completely. Remove all shampoo residue from the coat. Leftover product can irritate skin if it remains on the fur.
- Towel-dry and keep your cat warm. Dry the coat with a towel and keep the cat in a warm place until dry.
When a veterinarian should guide the bath
If your cat has itchy or inflamed skin, a diagnosed condition, or needs repeated baths, ask a veterinarian rather than trying household alternatives. A veterinarian may prescribe medicated shampoo and give product-specific directions, including how long it should remain on the coat; bathing frequency depends on the condition. Follow those instructions rather than applying a routine-bath schedule. See VCA’s medicated-shampoo instructions.
Do not apply essential oils, solvents, or other household cleaning products to remove something from fur. These substances can themselves be hazardous; contact a veterinary professional for advice about the specific material. If your cat cannot be bathed safely, ask a veterinarian for help rather than risking injury. VCA notes that veterinary staff may use sedation when needed for safe handling: VCA’s toxic-hazards guidance.
