No single automatic cat feeder suits every cat. The six models below differ most in the food they accept, how many meals they can schedule, whether they depend on an app, and what happens to the schedule when Wi-Fi or power fails. Choose in this order: first the food and the daily amount your cat needs, then the feeder design that handles that food, then the schedule, app and backup features you can live with. The comparison reports manufacturer product information. None of these models was independently tested for dispensing accuracy or reliability for this article, so treat the specifications as claims to verify on the current listing.
Set the daily amount before you choose a feeder
A feeder only dispenses what you program, so the program has to start from a correct number. VCA Animal Hospitals recommends measured daily portions rather than free-choice or estimated scoops, including for cats that graze. Its feeding guidance gives at least two meals a day as the most common recommendation, while the right frequency depends on the individual cat and household; some cats do better with more meals.
How many calories your cat needs depends on age, body weight, activity and health, and that calculation belongs with your veterinarian. VCA’s kitten weight-management guidance describes measured meals at set times, asks owners to consult the veterinary team about daily calories, and says treats should stay at no more than 10% of daily calories. That guidance is written for kittens and does not replace an adult cat’s plan.
Choose a dry-food hopper or a wet-food compartment feeder
The two designs solve different problems. A dry-food hopper holds kibble in a single reservoir and dispenses measured portions from it. A multi-compartment wet-food feeder holds separate meals in individual compartments, and some models add cooling ice packs to slow spoilage of wet food.

Schedule, app and backup are separate features
Many buyers assume these three features come as a package. They do not. A model can store a schedule on the device, let you edit it from a phone, and keep running during a power cut, and each of those behaviours is specified separately by the manufacturer.
- Schedule storage: whether meal times live on the feeder itself. Whisker states its schedule continues when the feeder goes offline.
- App control: whether you can change schedules remotely. App-free models such as PetSafe FlexFeed avoid this dependency.
- Power backup: whether the feeder keeps dispensing during an outage. Catit and PETKIT both describe this as depending on batteries being installed.

- After setup, run one test feeding, unplug the power, and confirm that the next scheduled meal still dispenses on backup power if your model claims that capability.
Calibrate portions before you trust the setting
Portion settings are model-specific units, not universal weights. A setting that dispenses a steady amount of one kibble may give a different weight with another food, so the number on the dial or in the app is only a starting point. Aqara’s instruction is to weigh one portion and enter its gram value in the device settings, and the same approach works for other feeders.
- Fill the feeder with the exact food you plan to use.
- Set one portion and dispense it into a bowl placed on a kitchen scale.
- Repeat the dispense three times and average the weights.
- Enter the gram value where the model allows it, or adjust the unit until the average matches your cat’s target portion.
- Repeat the check whenever you switch food brand or kibble size, because the weight per setting can change.
Multi-cat households
Capacity and app features do not establish whether a feeder suits a home with more than one cat. A large tank like Whisker’s 32 cups means fewer refills, but it does not stop one cat from eating another’s portion. If your cats eat at different speeds or have different calorie needs, plan separate feeding arrangements and watch each cat’s bowl or compartment. Capacity figures indicate refill frequency only; they do not tell you whether a model controls access for individual cats.

When to involve your veterinarian
An automatic feeder solves timing and portion delivery. It cannot diagnose a change in appetite, and it does not prevent obesity by itself. Contact your veterinary team for a tailored plan if your cat has:
- Obesity, or a weight-loss plan that requires precise calories.
- Diabetes or another condition that makes meal timing part of treatment.
- Medication that must be given with food at set times.
- A kitten’s feeding plan, where calories and treats need individual guidance.
- A sudden change in eating, drinking or bowl behaviour, which should be observed directly rather than assumed from the feeder’s log.
VCA’s feeding article, written by contributors Caitlin Grant, DVM, DVSc, Dip ECVCN; Ryan Llera, BSc, DVM; and Robin Downing, DVM, DAAPM, DACVSMR, CVPP, CRPP, makes the timing point directly: “Some medical conditions require that cats eat at specific times during the day.” That is the situation where a scheduled feeder is most useful, but only once a veterinarian has set the plan.

Enrichment and begging
VCA describes food puzzles and dispensing toys as enrichment and activity options. It also says an automatic feeder can help redirect begging toward the feeder. A puzzle toy is a separate product, and it does not replace unattended scheduled dispensing.
