To clean a dog bed without damaging its foam, follow the care instructions for the exact bed: remove the cover and inserts, machine-wash only parts the label permits, and spot-clean foam unless the manufacturer explicitly approves another method. Let foam dry completely before putting the bed back together. A removable cover does not mean the foam insert is washable.
Check the care label before washing
Dog beds can combine a washable cover with foam, bolsters or a water-resistant liner that needs different care. Check the bed’s tag and the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact model before using a washer, detergent or dryer. Maytag’s general guidance warns that some foam inserts should not be machine-washed or submerged because excess water can break them down: Maytag’s dog-bed washing guide.
If the care instructions are missing or unclear, do not assume the foam is washable. Clean the cover only if its label permits, and contact the maker about the insert.
Separate the cover, foam and other components
Unzip the bed and remove the foam and any separate bolsters or liners before laundering the cover. Check each part’s instructions independently. For example, Casper says to remove the inserts and wash its cover in cold water on a gentle cycle, then tumble dry on low; it says not to wash its foam inserts. These directions apply to Casper’s bed, not every dog bed: Casper’s care instructions.

Wash the cover only as its label allows
Use the temperature, cycle, detergent and drying method stated for your bed’s cover. Manufacturer instructions differ, so do not transfer settings from one brand to another. For instance, Ruggable specifies cold water, mild detergent and low-heat tumble drying for its outer cover, and advises against fabric softener. Those settings are specific to its cover.

Before washing, remove loose fur and debris. Maytag recommends removing excess pet hair first, and Ruggable suggests vacuuming between washes with an upholstery attachment. This helps clear debris without subjecting the bed to an unnecessary wash.
Spot-clean foam instead of soaking it
Unless the manufacturer says the foam can be washed, treat stains on the insert with a cautious spot-cleaning approach. Paw.com says its memory foam is not machine washable. For its products, it recommends using a damp cloth with warm water and a small amount of dish soap, pressing out moisture without wringing, and air-drying the foam. For a stubborn pet stain, an enzyme-based cleaner may help: Casper and Ruggable recommend enzyme-based spot cleaners for some pet-bed stains. Check that the cleaner is compatible with the bed’s materials, follow both the cleaner’s and bed maker’s instructions, and avoid saturating the foam. A stain product does not make foam safe to soak or machine-wash.
Dry every part fully before reassembly
Use a dryer only for components whose care label permits it. Maytag advises air-drying an item when its tag does not allow tumble drying. Paw.com directs owners to air-dry its memory foam, while Ruggable prohibits machine-drying its foam cushions and liners. Allow foam to dry through before putting the cover back on so damp material is not enclosed inside the bed.

If the bed has already been washed or soaked
Remove the cover and any liner so the components can dry separately. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the foam; do not put it in a dryer unless those instructions explicitly allow it. If the foam’s care method is unknown, ask the manufacturer before applying heat or more water. Reassemble only when the foam is completely dry.
Some memory-foam beds have replacement covers available; Paw.com says this is true for some of its beds. Confirm the exact model and dimensions with the manufacturer before ordering.
