To weigh a fish safely, use a hanging scale with a sling or cradle that supports the fish along its body. Tare the empty sling, place the fish in it, lift only long enough to read the display, and return a fish you plan to release to the water promptly. Never suspend a fish by its lip or mouth.
What you need to weigh a fish
- A hanging scale: Choose one rated above the fish’s plausible weight, with a readable display and units that match the record form if you are documenting a catch. No particular capacity or consumer-scale accuracy threshold applies to every fish or record program.
- A full-body sling or cradle: It should spread the fish’s weight along its body rather than concentrate the load at the mouth. A digital hanging fish scale paired with a suitable sling is a practical setup.
- A way to keep the fish wet: For a fish intended for release, prepare the equipment before lifting it out of the water. NOAA Fisheries recommends wet hands, minimal handling, and less than 60 seconds of air exposure when removal from water is necessary; that is ideal handling guidance, not a guarantee of survival. NOAA Fisheries’ catch-and-release guidance explains the recommendations.
A soft rubber or knotless-mesh landing net can help reduce handling during landing. The National Park Service recommends these net styles for catch-and-release fishing; whether a particular net is suitable for suspended weighing depends on its construction and weight. How to weigh a fish step by step
- Set up the scale before lifting the fish. Attach the sling or cradle to the hanging scale and confirm that the scale can handle the likely weight. If releasing the fish, have everything ready so it spends as little time out of water as possible.
- Zero the empty sling. Hang the empty sling and use the scale’s tare or zero function. If the scale has no such function, weigh the sling separately and subtract that reading from the fish-and-sling total.
- Wet your hands and place the fish gently in the sling. Distribute its body along the support. NOAA Fisheries advises supporting the weight of a fish removed from the water along the length of its body and never suspending it by the lip or mouth.
- Lift only long enough to get a stable reading. Note the displayed weight and units. There is no universal settling time; it depends on the scale. Return a fish intended for release to the water promptly.
- Record the result accurately. Write down the units and any details required by the record program. Do not assume a personal measurement will qualify as an official record weight.
Why a fish should not hang from its mouth
A lip grip or mouth-only hook concentrates the fish’s weight at one point instead of supporting its body. For an out-of-water weighing, use a sling or cradle that supports the body along its length. This is especially important when the fish will be released: keeping it wet, limiting handling and air exposure, and returning it promptly are recommended practices, but they cannot guarantee survival.

Does a scale reading count for a fishing record?
Not automatically. Record rules depend on the program, and may specify scale certification, an official weigh station, photographs, or a witness. Check the rules before relying on a reading or releasing a fish you hope to enter.

For Texas Parks and Wildlife’s Angler Recognition Program, any certified scale may be used for an application when an official weigh station is unavailable. The department recognizes certification by IGFA or a licensed scale calibration company. It also allows certified handheld scales to verify catch weight when an independent witness observes the weighing; its recertification timing provision is specific to that program. Choosing a scale and sling
- Capacity: Select a scale rated above the plausible weight of the fish. Without a target species or size, a specific capacity cannot be recommended.
- Display and units: A clear display and units that match the form or record requirements help prevent transcription errors.
- Resolution, accuracy, and certification: Check the scale specifications and the relevant record program’s rules. There is no universal consumer-scale accuracy threshold established for this use.
- Support design: The sling or cradle should carry the fish along its body. Do not use a lip grip as the sole support for a fish weighed out of water.
- Fishing conditions: Water resistance, corrosion resistance, and ease of cleaning are sensible selection criteria, but specifications vary by model.
