Dogs often pull because it gets them somewhere they want to go: toward a smell, a greeting, or simply at a faster pace. If pulling still moves the walk forward, it can become a learned way to get access. Teach your dog that a slack leash and attention make good things happen, and that a tight leash pauses forward progress. Start somewhere quiet, reward often, and add distractions gradually.
Why dogs pull on the leash
From a dog’s point of view, pulling can be effective. It may bring them closer to an interesting scent, another person or dog, or the next place they want to explore. When the dog pulls and reaches that reward, the access itself can reinforce pulling. The American Kennel Club’s guidance on leash walking also notes that dogs may want to move faster than their handlers.
Pulling is not necessarily defiance. A dog may be highly stimulated by the environment or may simply have learned that leash tension gets them where they want to go. Pulling back can make matters worse: the AKC describes an “opposition reflex,” in which a dog pulls against pressure, turning the leash into a tug-of-war rather than showing the dog what to do instead. See the AKC’s guide to stopping leash pulling.
What loose-leash walking means
Loose-leash walking means your dog can walk near you without pulling. It does not require the dog to maintain a formal heel position for the whole walk. Look for a leash that hangs in a relaxed J shape rather than staying taut. The aim is comfortable walking together, with opportunities to sniff and explore earned through the behavior you want.

How to teach your dog not to pull
- Start where success is easy. Choose a quiet place with few distractions. Give your dog time to get comfortable wearing the leash or harness, and reward them for noticing you and staying nearby.
- Mark and reward the behavior you want. Use a clicker or a consistent word such as “yes,” then give a suitable reward. In early practice, reward generously for checking in, walking near you, and keeping slack in the leash. The AKC’s loose-leash walking guide describes rewarding attention and proximity as part of training.
- Pause when the leash tightens. Stop moving when the leash goes taut. Wait for slack or for your dog to turn their attention back to you; mark and reward that response, then continue. Avoid jerking or pulling the dog back.
- Make access to sniffing a reward. After a short stretch of slack-leash walking, release your dog to sniff a safe spot. This lets exploration follow polite walking instead of pulling. A cue such as “go sniff” can help distinguish walking together from free sniffing time.
- Build difficulty gradually. When your dog can succeed in a quiet place, practice in busier settings and around more distractions. Keep early sessions short and upbeat, and reward frequently before asking for longer stretches of walking.
Consistency matters. If pulling sometimes gets your dog to the destination, it can keep working as a strategy from the dog’s perspective. If you are rushed, meet immediate toileting needs in a safe nearby place and plan a separate practice walk when you have time to pause and reward.
Choosing a harness or headcollar
A properly fitted walking harness or headcollar may help you manage a determined puller while you teach leash skills. These tools can make handling easier, but they do not teach loose-leash walking by themselves. The guidance from the AKC does not establish one universally best product or fit for every dog. Choose equipment that fits comfortably and that you can use safely; reward-based practice remains the way to teach the walking behavior.

Why reward-based training is the recommended approach
The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) recommends reward-based methods for dog training and behavior problems. Its Position Statements page includes its Humane Dog Training Position Statement and a 2025 Board clarification: AVSAB continues to support the statement and advises against aversive methods such as electronic collars, prong collars, choke chains, and leash corrections. The 2021 statement says, “Evidence supports the use of reward based methods for all canine training.”
AVSAB also cautions against explaining behavior through dominance and notes that reward-based training can provide structure and boundaries without fear, intimidation, or pain. Avoid using leash corrections or equipment intended to cause pain or fear; teach and reinforce the behavior you want instead.

When pulling involves fear, reactivity, or aggression
Pulling toward a person or dog may be excitement; pulling away may reflect fear. If your dog also barks, lunges, behaves aggressively, or has bitten, do not assume that the basic stop-and-reward approach is enough. Create distance from triggers, choose quieter routes or times, and seek an individualized plan from a reward-based trainer experienced with reactivity or a veterinary behavior professional. AVSAB’s position statements provide its guidance on humane training approaches.

Progress depends on the dog, the environment, and how consistently pulling stops paying off. The available guidance does not establish a fixed number of days, a guaranteed result, or a single protocol suitable for every dog. If you seek professional help, ask whether the trainer uses reward-based methods and has experience with the specific behavior you are seeing.
