Young orangutans build social experience through contact with their mothers, peers and older siblings, as well as by watching other orangutans. Play is part of that process, but it changes with age and opportunity: solitary play and social play do not follow the same developmental pattern, and observations alone cannot prove that play teaches a particular skill.
How play changes as orangutans grow
A 2024 study followed 39 immature orangutans, ages 0–11, at two wild research sites: Suaq in Sumatra and Tuanan in Borneo. Across more than 11,500 hours of full-day focal observation, researchers recorded distinct patterns for different kinds of play. Solitary object play and solitary locomotor play peaked earlier than social play, so it is misleading to treat all play as one behavior that rises or falls together. (International Journal of Primatology, 2024)
Social play involves interaction with another orangutan; object play involves manipulating objects alone, while locomotor play involves movement such as climbing or running. The age patterns suggest that young orangutans’ play repertoire changes during development. The study authors propose that different trajectories may relate to adult sociability and behavioral repertoires, but they also note that it is difficult to establish what functions play serves.
Who do young orangutans play with?
Play partners include peers, older siblings and mothers, and their relative importance shifts as immatures grow. In the 2024 study, social play partners changed over development. Males in the sample were more likely than females to engage in social play with non-mothers. This is a result for the observed animals, not a rule for every orangutan population. Research on infant interactions at Suaq and Tuanan likewise found that peers and older siblings were primarily play partners, while mothers were the main targets of begging. Social activities varied with population and with which associates were present. These observations help distinguish the different roles familiar individuals may play; they do not mean that every interaction is instruction. (International Journal of Primatology, 2020)
Why social play depends on who is nearby
Social play occurred more often overall at Suaq than at Tuanan, where potential partners were available less often. But when researchers considered how much time immatures spent associating with other orangutans, Tuanan animals were just as likely to play socially. The difference in observed rates therefore need not mean that one group was more willing to play; opportunities for contact mattered. The comparison describes two sites and their social and ecological contexts, not a controlled test of species-wide differences. (International Journal of Primatology, 2024)

At Tuanan, greater fruit availability correlated with longer associations and more social play. Researchers did not find the same pattern at Suaq. This site-specific result should not be read as a universal rule that fruit availability increases orangutan play.
A separate study of East Bornean mother-offspring pairs aged 1–7 at Danum Valley found that social play increased with age while resting and total playing decreased. Mothers’ time spent feeding and traveling predicted offspring time in those activities. Differences in ecology and population density also matter when comparing Borneo and Sumatra, so this study adds context rather than a single developmental template for all orangutans. Do orangutans learn by watching each other?
Yes, observation is part of the wider picture of social learning, but it is distinct from play. A study of observational social learning and socially induced practice of routine skills found that, with increasing age, young orangutans showed a growing preference for role models other than their mothers. This supports the idea that they attend to a wider circle of individuals as they develop. It does not show that every play bout is teaching or that an immature orangutan consciously imitates a peer. (Animal Cognition, 2016)
A 2025 study defines “peering” as close-range observation of another orangutan’s activity. Immatures preferred older individuals and learning-intensive contexts in both wild and zoo settings. Zoo-housed immatures peered more often, and more often at non-mothers, than their wild counterparts. Peering is evidence of social attention; by itself, it does not establish that watching produced a particular learned outcome. (Animal Cognition, 2025)

How rehabilitation observations differ from wild development
A study of seven orphaned orangutans observed over 18 months in a forest rehabilitation setting found that they spent more time in peer social play, at the expense of resting and solitary play, compared with patterns reported for wild, mother-reared immatures. The orphans lived with human surrogate mothers and other orphans, so their social conditions differed from those of young orangutans raised by their mothers in the wild. The finding describes that rehabilitation group, not a typical wild developmental sequence. (Animals, 2021)
