Hunting behaviour is the set of actions an animal uses to locate, approach, attack and secure food. In research, however, “a hunt” is not a single universal script. Species, prey, habitat, social setting and the observer’s definition all change what hunting looks like. This article uses hunting behaviour primarily to mean nonhuman predators hunting prey, then explains why human recreational hunting must be studied separately.

What hunting behaviour means in animal research

Predation is often described as a simple sequence: search, pursue and capture. That shorthand is useful, but it can hide important decisions and pauses. A wolf may detect prey, change direction, approach cautiously, stop to watch, test a herd, attack one animal, abandon the attempt and resume searching. Treating the entire event as “pursuit” loses information about how the predator made those choices.

Researchers therefore need an operational definition: observable categories that different observers can recognise and record in the same way. The category “hunt” may refer to an encounter, an attempted attack, a full pursuit or a successful capture, depending on the study. A careful report states which unit it measured rather than treating every predator-prey meeting as a completed hunt.

MacNulty, Mech and Smith’s 2007 ethogram for large-carnivore predatory behaviour is a useful example. Their proposed framework separates six observable categories: search, approach, watch, attack-group, attack-individual and capture. They compared the scheme with 31 earlier classifications and descriptions covering seven other species and five other wolf populations. The close correspondence suggested that the categories could be broadly useful, but the authors presented them as a proposal, not a law that every predator follows.

The six stages of the proposed large-carnivore ethogram

The six categories describe behaviour that can be observed in the field. They are not guaranteed to occur in this order, and a hunt can stop or return to an earlier category at any point.

1. Search

Search is movement or positioning used to find potential prey. A predator may travel through likely habitat, pause to sample odours or sounds, scan from a vantage point or follow signs such as tracks. Search does not prove that prey has been detected; it is behaviour directed toward finding it.

Researchers can record search distance, speed, route, pauses and habitat features. Those measurements help distinguish deliberate searching from ordinary travel, territorial movement or resting-site changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Approach

Approach begins when a predator moves toward detected or suspected prey. The animal may reduce speed, use cover, alter its route or coordinate with companions. An approach can end because prey flees, the predator loses visual contact, conditions become unsafe or the predator decides that the expected reward is too low.

3. Watch

Watch is a stationary or nearly stationary period in which the predator monitors prey. It may assess distance, wind, vegetation, group cohesion, escape routes or the reactions of other predators. Including watch as its own category matters because a pause is not necessarily inactivity: observation can determine whether an attack is attempted.

4. Attack-group

An attack-group is directed at several prey animals or a herd or flock as a unit. The purpose may be to trigger movement, split the group or create an opportunity to isolate a vulnerable individual. Group attacks can be difficult to classify if the predator rapidly switches from a herd-level disturbance to one target, so observers should record the initial target and the point at which the focus changes.

5. Attack-individual

An attack-individual is directed at one identified prey animal. It can include a rush, bite attempt, tackle or other contact behaviour, whether or not the predator succeeds. An attack is not the same as a capture: prey may escape, the predator may stop, or another animal may intervene.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Capture

Capture is the point at which the predator secures prey sufficiently to control or kill it. Depending on the species and study, researchers may distinguish initial restraint, killing and feeding. Reporting those outcomes separately prevents a failed attack from being counted as a successful hunt.

What the Yellowstone wolf observations show

The proposed ethogram was illustrated with more than 2,150 hours of observed wolf behaviour in Yellowstone National Park. The observations included 517 elk encounters and 134 American bison encounters. These numbers describe the observation record used to develop and illustrate the framework; they are not a population-wide estimate of wolf hunting success.

Wolves do not perform a fixed choreography at every encounter. Pack size, prey species, terrain, snow, vegetation, prey condition and the presence of competing predators can alter the sequence. A bison encounter may involve greater caution and longer assessment than an encounter with an elk, while dense cover can make approach and watch harder for observers to distinguish.

The value of the framework is therefore analytical. It gives field researchers a shared vocabulary for comparing behaviour without claiming that all wolves, or all predators, use identical tactics. When reading a study, check whether its results concern encounters, attacks, pursuits, captures or feeding events.

Active pursuit and ambush hunting are different strategies

Two broad descriptions are often used when explaining predator tactics. Active pursuit depends on searching and moving toward prey, sometimes over a substantial distance. Ambush hunting relies more heavily on concealment, positioning and a sudden attack from close range. Real predators can switch between modes, and many species use intermediate tactics.

Feature Active pursuit Ambush hunting
Movement before attack Often involves extended searching, approach and pursuit Often minimises movement until prey is within striking range
Habitat dependence Benefits from routes that permit travel and sustained visibility Benefits from cover, concealment or predictable prey paths
Prey response Escape speed, stamina, group formation and route choice can be important Detection distance, vigilance and movement near cover can be decisive
How success is measured Researchers may record pursuit distance, duration, abandonment and capture Researchers may record concealment, strike distance, surprise and capture

Neither mode is universally superior. A tactic that works in open habitat may fail in dense vegetation, and prey behaviour can change the balance. Calling one strategy “best” without specifying species, habitat, season and measurement method overstates the evidence.

How prey behaviour changes hunting outcomes

Predator and prey behaviour form a moving feedback system. A prey animal that detects a predator may freeze, flee, join a group, seek cover or change its route. The predator then updates its decision. Survival is influenced by traits such as activity, boldness, vigilance, body size and habitat use, but the same trait can have different consequences against different predators.

A 2026 study in Florida’s Everglades illustrates that interaction. Shyer, more active hispid cotton rats were more likely to be killed by active predators, while less active rats appeared more likely to be killed by ambush predators. This is a result from that particular predator community and habitat; it is not a general rule that active prey always face greater danger or that shy prey are safer.

The finding also shows why a single “predation risk” score can be misleading. Researchers need to identify the predator’s hunting mode, the prey trait being measured and the environmental setting. A change that reduces risk from one predator may increase risk from another.

How scientists measure hunting behaviour

Field studies combine direct observation with records of movement, habitat and outcomes. Common measurements include:

  • Encounter: predator and potential prey are observed in the same area.
  • Detection: the predator appears to recognise prey, based on orientation or subsequent movement.
  • Approach or pursuit: directed movement toward prey is recorded, often with distance and duration.
  • Attack: the predator initiates a rush or contact attempt.
  • Capture and kill: prey is restrained or killed, with definitions stated by the study.
  • Abandonment: the predator stops the attempt without capture.

Observers may use focal follows, camera traps, radio telemetry, GPS collars or video. Each method has blind spots. A camera can show an attack but miss the earlier search; a GPS collar can reveal route changes but not whether an animal was watching prey; direct observation can provide detail but is limited by visibility and observer disturbance.

Why hunting behaviour matters for wildlife management

Predator behaviour helps managers understand where animals forage, how they respond to roads and cover, and when livestock or vulnerable wildlife may face higher risk. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service identifies predator behaviour and predator-prey relationships as useful for wildlife management and damage assessment.

That application has limits. Official descriptions also identify information gaps in predator-prey and predator-livestock relationships. Behaviour data can improve a management decision without resolving every cause of conflict. Habitat changes, prey abundance, human activity, disease and season may all alter the result.

For a management proposal, ask three questions:

  1. What behaviour was actually measured? A study of attacks is not automatically evidence about captures or livestock losses.
  2. Where and when was it measured? Results from one landscape or season may not transfer to another.
  3. What alternative explanations were considered? A road, food source or weather event may influence both predator movement and observed conflict.

Human recreational hunting is a separate research subject

The phrase “hunting behaviour” can also mean how people pursue game. That is not interchangeable with nonhuman predation. Human studies measure decisions, movement, technology, regulations, habitat selection and harvest outcomes, while animal-predator studies examine the interaction between predator and prey.

A 2024 study record describes high-resolution GPS tracking of 483 California rifle hunters to examine hunting modes, habitat selection and harvest success. The sample and setting belong to that study; they should not be used to infer how all hunters behave or to compare human success directly with a wolf’s capture rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A separate 2024 U.S. Forest Service summary reports that hunters used a small portion of the available landscape in the study. Hunters who scouted beforehand and spent more time hunting were generally more successful. The same summary reports different prey responses: elk shifted distribution during hunts to avoid open roads, while mule deer stayed within their ranges but moved faster. Those findings are study-specific and should not be presented as universal advice for every species, region or hunting season.

Keeping the two meanings separate prevents a common error: applying concepts such as ambush, pursuit or capture to human behaviour without accounting for firearms, access rules, scouting, social decisions and harvest regulations.

A practical way to observe a hunt responsibly

Anyone watching wildlife can use the ethogram as a descriptive checklist, provided observation does not disturb the animals.

  1. Identify the subjects and setting. Record species, number of predators and prey, habitat, date and weather if known.
  2. Mark the first observable event. Decide whether you saw search, detection, approach or an already active attack. Do not assume the hunt began when you started watching.
  3. Log transitions. Note when the animal changes from approach to watch, from group attack to individual attack, or from attack to abandonment.
  4. Record the outcome separately. Use encounter, failed attack, escape, capture and kill only when the evidence supports that category.
  5. Note uncertainty. If vegetation or distance prevents a confident classification, mark it unknown rather than filling the gap with an assumption.
  6. Keep distance and follow local rules. Do not approach, feed, call, chase or block an animal to obtain a better view.

This method produces more useful notes than writing that an animal “went hunting.” It preserves what was seen and what remains uncertain.

Common interpretation mistakes

  • Assuming every hunt ends in capture: many approaches and attacks fail or are abandoned.
  • Treating the six categories as a rigid sequence: predators can pause, reverse direction or switch targets.
  • Generalising from one predator-prey system: the Florida cotton-rat result cannot predict every prey species.
  • Confusing movement with intent: travel recorded by GPS is not automatically search behaviour.
  • Ignoring the observation method: what a camera, collar or human observer can detect differs.
  • Combining human and nonhuman hunting evidence: the questions, constraints and outcome measures are different.

Further reading on wolf predation

Readers who want a wolf-specific treatment can look for Wolves on the Hunt: The Behavior of Wolves Hunting Wild Prey by L. David Mech, Douglas W. Smith and Daniel R. MacNulty. The work combines behavioural data, original field observations, literature research and illustrations; its ebook and online edition include video segments. Availability can vary by retailer and region.

The essential takeaway

Hunting behaviour is best understood as a set of observable decisions rather than one universal sequence. The proposed large-carnivore framework—search, approach, watch, attack-group, attack-individual and capture—makes those decisions easier to describe, while leaving room for species and habitat differences. Predator mode and prey traits interact, human recreational hunting requires separate analysis, and every conclusion should stay tied to the species, location, method and outcome that were actually measured.
