A Husky Pug mix is a cross between a Siberian Husky and a Pug. You may also see this dog advertised as a Hug or Pugsky, but neither name describes an AKC-recognized breed. The American Kennel Club recognizes the parent breeds—not the mix—and there is no official standard for its size, appearance, temperament, exercise needs, or lifespan.
That lack of a standard matters. One puppy may be compact and short-muzzled, while another may be taller, more athletic, and strongly Husky-like. Before choosing one, pay particular attention to breathing, body condition, exercise tolerance, escape behavior, and health records for both parents.

Husky Pug mix at a glance
| Trait | What you can reasonably expect |
|---|---|
| Other names | Hug, Pugsky; informal marketing names |
| Parent breeds | Siberian Husky and Pug |
| Recognition | Not recognized as a standardized AKC breed |
| Adult size | Variable; often somewhere between the parent breeds, but not predictable from the nickname |
| Coat | Short to dense double coat; shedding may be moderate or heavy |
| Exercise | Individualized. Husky-like energy may conflict with Pug-like breathing limitations |
| Training | Usually best approached with short, reward-based sessions and secure management |
| Main health concern | Pug-inherited short-muzzle anatomy and reduced heat or exercise tolerance |
The Siberian Husky is a medium-sized working sled dog. The AKC lists adult Husky weights of 45–60 pounds for males and 35–50 pounds for females. Pugs are much smaller, with a typical weight of 14–18 pounds. A cross can fall between those figures, but it will not necessarily mature at the midpoint. Sex, parental size, generation, nutrition, and health all influence growth.

What does a Husky Pug mix look like?
There is no single “correct” Hug appearance. A puppy may inherit:

- a compact Pug-like body or a longer, more athletic Husky-like frame;
- upright, folded, or partly folded ears;
- a curled or less tightly curled tail;
- a short muzzle or a more moderate muzzle;
- facial wrinkles, prominent eyes, or a smoother face;
- a short coat or a dense Husky-style double coat; and
- blue, brown, or mismatched eyes, depending on its inheritance.
A miniature-looking dog is not automatically a Husky Pug mix. Appearance alone is unreliable for identifying mixed-breed parentage. Breeder records or a DNA test are more useful if the ancestry is important.
Temperament and behavior
The parent breeds bring noticeably different tendencies. Siberian Huskies are friendly, social, athletic, independent, and strongly motivated to run. Pugs are generally affectionate, outgoing, playful, adaptable, and highly people-oriented.
A mix may therefore be sociable and cuddly but still independent, vocal, difficult to call off, or eager to chase. It may also be food-motivated and sensitive to harsh handling. These are possibilities rather than promises: a cross does not receive a precise half-and-half temperament package.

Do not assume that a friendly puppy will be reliable off leash or automatically easy with children. Supervise all interactions between dogs and children, teach children not to grab or climb on the dog, and assess the individual animal’s behavior in different situations.
Exercise: the important compromise
Exercise needs cannot be reduced to a dependable number of minutes for this mix. A Husky-influenced dog may want substantial daily activity and mental work, while a short-muzzled Pug-influenced dog may not be able to cool itself or breathe efficiently during strenuous exercise.
Start with age-appropriate walks, play, training, and sniffing activities. Increase activity gradually while watching how the dog breathes and recovers. Stop if breathing becomes labored, recovery is unusually slow, or the dog becomes weak, wobbly, or distressed. Ask your veterinarian to help design an exercise plan if the dog has a short muzzle, noisy breathing, excess weight, or poor stamina.
Mental enrichment can be safer than simply adding distance. Try:

Never use the Husky parent’s endurance as proof that every Husky Pug mix can run, hike, or exercise for long periods.
Breathing and heat safety
The Pug parent is brachycephalic, or short-headed. A mix with a short muzzle can inherit narrowed nostrils, excess tissue in the throat, a large tongue, or a narrowed windpipe. Crossing with a Husky does not automatically remove these risks.
Persistent snoring, rattly breathing, or noisy sleep should not automatically be dismissed as a cute breed trait. Seek veterinary advice if you notice:
- obvious effort when breathing;
- nostril flaring or wide-open-mouth breathing;
- use of the abdominal muscles to breathe;
- blue or gray gums or tongue;
- collapse or fainting;
- overheating; or
- rapid exhaustion during mild activity.
In an emergency involving collapse, blue mucous membranes, or severe breathing difficulty, move the dog to a cool area and contact an emergency veterinarian immediately. Do not force exercise or delay care.

Use a properly fitted body harness rather than putting pressure on the neck. Keep the dog lean, avoid strenuous activity in hot or humid weather, provide water and shade, and never leave it in a parked car. A thick Husky-like coat may help in cool weather, but it does not protect a short-muzzled dog from heat injury.
Health concerns
There is no completed, breed-specific epidemiological health profile for the Husky Pug mix. Health planning should cover the structure and inherited risks of both parents.
Risks associated with the Pug parent
- brachycephalic obstructive airway problems and poor heat tolerance;
- corneal ulcers, dry eye, and other eye problems;
- weight gain and obesity;
- patellar luxation;
- hip dysplasia;
- Pug Dog Encephalitis, also called necrotizing meningoencephalitis; and
- some inherited metabolic disorders.
Pug-related eye concerns deserve special attention because prominent eyes can be more vulnerable to injury. Excess weight is also more than a cosmetic issue: it can worsen breathing and reduce exercise tolerance.

Risks associated with the Siberian Husky parent
Siberian Husky health programs emphasize hip and eye screening. The Siberian Husky Club of America’s current health requirements include an annual ophthalmologist examination from at least 12 months of age, a hip evaluation, and genetic testing for Siberian Husky Shaking Puppy Syndrome Type 1 and Siberian Husky Polyneuropathy Type 1. Eye disease and hip dysplasia can occur, along with conditions such as arthritis and cancer.

Is a mixed Husky Pug automatically healthier?
No. Crossing two breeds may reduce the chance of combining particular recessive variants, but it does not guarantee good health, eliminate airway disease, or prevent conditions that occur in either parent breed.
A UC Davis study of 27,254 dogs found that, among 24 inherited disorders examined, 13 showed no significant difference in the proportion of affected purebred and mixed-breed dogs after matching for age, sex, and body weight. The practical lesson is simple: evaluate the individual dog and the health of both parents rather than treating “mixed breed” as a health certificate.
Coat and grooming
Grooming depends on which coat the puppy inherits. A dense double coat may shed heavily, particularly during seasonal undercoat loss. A short Pug-like coat is easier to brush but can still shed substantially. Weekly brushing is a sensible starting point; increase it when loose undercoat becomes noticeable.

Do not put creams, drops, or cleaning products into the eyes or skin folds unless they are appropriate for that dog.
Training and daily management
Start reward-based training and controlled socialization early. Both parent breeds benefit from puppy training, but their motivations differ: a Pug may work enthusiastically for food and attention, while a Husky may decide that an alternative activity is more interesting.

- Teach name response, recall, loose-leash walking, and a reliable “leave it.”
- Practice around gradual, manageable distractions rather than expecting instant obedience outdoors.
- Reward calm behavior, handling, and settling on a mat.
- Use gates, doors, identification, and secure fencing to prevent escapes.
Never assume dependable off-leash behavior. Husky-like dogs can be skilled escape artists and may run even when they are friendly and well socialized. A secure harness, a standard leash, and a fenced area are safer than testing recall near roads or wildlife.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Feeding and weight control
Feed for the dog’s age, current size, activity, body condition, and veterinary advice—not from a generic Husky or Pug chart. Measure meals, count treats, and reassess portions as growth and activity change.
Ask your veterinarian to assess body condition rather than relying only on the scale. Keeping a short-muzzled dog lean is especially important because extra weight can increase airway effort and heat intolerance. Avoid restricting food during puppy growth without professional guidance.
Choosing a puppy or breeder
Ask for verifiable records for both parents. A breeder who has tested only one side of the cross, or who offers only a broad DNA panel, has not addressed the full range of relevant risks.
Useful Pug-side records
The Pug Dog Club of America’s health recommendations include screening for Pug Dog Encephalitis or necrotizing meningoencephalitis, hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, and eye disease. Additional recommendations include testing for Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency, bile acids, and elbow dysplasia.
Useful Husky-side records
The Siberian Husky Club of America recommends an annual ACVO ophthalmologist examination from at least 12 months, hip evaluation through OFA, OVC, PennHIP, or an equivalent registry, and genetic tests for SPS1 and SHPN1.

Before committing, watch the puppy breathe while resting and after mild, age-appropriate activity. Persistent noisy breathing, obvious respiratory effort, fainting, blue mucous membranes, or unusually rapid exhaustion should prompt veterinary assessment and serious reconsideration of the purchase.
Who is this mix suitable for?
This cross may suit someone who wants an affectionate companion and is prepared for uncertainty. The right home can provide positive training, secure containment, careful weight management, regular veterinary care, and flexible exercise rather than assuming the dog will be either a small Husky or a more athletic Pug.
It may be a poor choice for someone seeking a predictable adult size, a guaranteed running partner, a low-maintenance coat, or a dog that can safely exercise in hot weather. A rescue dog with an established adult temperament may offer more information than a young puppy whose adult structure and stamina are still unknown.
FAQ
How big does a Husky Pug mix get?
There is no validated adult size range for this cross. Siberian Huskies are much larger than Pugs, and offspring can vary considerably. Parent size, sex, generation, nutrition, and health affect the result. A veterinarian’s growth assessment is more useful than a fixed online estimate.
Is a Husky Pug mix recognized by the AKC?
No. The AKC recognizes the Siberian Husky and Pug but does not list the Husky Pug mix, Hug, or Pugsky as a standardized breed.
Can a Husky Pug mix have breathing problems?
Yes. If the dog inherits a short muzzle or other brachycephalic anatomy, it may develop airway obstruction, noisy breathing, reduced exercise tolerance, and heat intolerance. Crossing with a Husky does not guarantee protection from Pug-related airway disease.
Is this mix good for running?
Not necessarily. A Husky-influenced dog may be athletic, but a short muzzle can sharply limit safe exertion and cooling. Build activity gradually, watch breathing and recovery, and get veterinary advice before planning strenuous exercise.
Do Husky Pug mixes shed?
They can shed moderately or heavily. A dog with a Husky-like double coat may have substantial seasonal shedding, while a short-coated dog can still shed regularly. Weekly brushing is a reasonable starting point.
Are Husky Pug mixes easy to train?
Some learn quickly, especially with food rewards, but the mix may inherit Husky-like independence or escape behavior. Short, reward-based sessions, early socialization, leash skills, and secure fencing are important.
The Bottom Line
A Husky Pug mix can be affectionate, entertaining, and highly individual—but the label does not predict a neat blend of two parent breeds. The most important questions are whether the dog breathes comfortably, stays lean, tolerates age-appropriate activity, and comes from parents with documented health screening. Choose the individual dog’s structure and behavior over the appeal of the nickname.
