It is not judged by how warm, playful, or feminine she appears on camera. That is the central argument of an April 17, 2026 AAHA Trends Magazine interview by Katie Lever, Ph.D., and it speaks directly to a question many veterinarians and pet owners face: can a vet be human, visible, and affectionate while still being taken seriously?
Who is speaking and what the interview covers
The article is a reported interview, not a study or a product review. Its claims about Fein’s experience and views are her own, as relayed by AAHA Trends Magazine, and they should be read as her perspective rather than formal association policy. - Quality of work. The clinical product itself: the accuracy of the diagnosis, the thoroughness of the plan, and the care taken in carrying it out.
- Integrity and honesty. Being honest about one’s work, including its limits.
- Positive conduct with colleagues. Being “a positive influence in your work environment” and “polite to co-workers.”
Her summary sentence makes the contrast explicit: these qualities “speak much more to professionalism than outward appearance.” She also argues that warmth, femininity, and playfulness do not determine clinical competence. The interview treats that as the heart of the matter, not a side point.
Why a short clip is not a clinical exam
Fein’s most visible content is edited. She says a 17-minute interaction was reduced to a three-minute video, and that the aim was to show how she interacts with a dog, not to document a complete physical examination. Her shorthand for the intent is simple: “I just happened to point a camera at it.”
This distinction matters for how viewers should read any veterinary social video. A clip can reveal handling style, tone, and the bond between a clinician and a patient. It cannot show history-taking, the full exam sequence, diagnostic reasoning, the discussion of options, or the medical record. Fein does not claim it does, and the interview is clear that her videos were never meant to stand in for that work.

Reading the room: adapting communication to the pet parent
Fein describes her communication as responsive rather than fixed. Some pet parents need a serious, reassuring manner, especially when news is hard. Others respond well to visible affection and humor. She says she reads the room and adjusts to what the owner needs while remaining authentic. Her own summary is modest: “I’m not really doing something different. I did not reinvent the wheel of how vets practice medicine.”

The interview connects this adaptability to the broader theme of gentle handling. The double standard women in veterinary medicine face
The article places the dispute around Fein’s content in a larger context. It describes Fein receiving criticism from another veterinary professional who characterized her approach as unprofessional and harmful to women’s credibility. The account does not name that critic, and it should not be read as a description of all critics or of veterinarians in general.

Trust, behind-the-scenes content, and what is not established

The workforce statistics carry the same limit. The feature states that women make up “over 50%” of global veterinary professionals and “80%” of veterinary students. It does not identify the underlying source, its year, the geographic definition used for the student figure, or the measurement method. These figures should be cited as reported by the AAHA feature, not as independently verified statistics. The interview does not provide other named statistics.

- Whether the veterinarian explains findings, options, and uncertainty clearly, rather than only reassuring you.
- Whether the explanation changes when your questions or concerns change, which reflects the responsive communication Fein describes.
- Whether the clinic team speaks respectfully to one another and to you, which is the collegial conduct she names.
- Whether a warm or lighthearted manner comes with a complete, documented examination and a straight account of what is known and unknown.
A friendly demeanor is not evidence of poor care, and a serious manner is not evidence of good care. The interview’s point is that the work and the conduct around it are what should be assessed.
In the end, Fein’s position is that a veterinarian can be visibly human and still be judged on the same grounds as anyone else in the profession: the quality of the work, the honesty of the account, and the way colleagues are treated.
