Veterinary university and professional-association support materials agree on a few practical points: the bond deserves acknowledgment, grief varies from person to person, and talking with people who understand the relationship helps. This guide explains what those sources say about coping, where to find support, how to help children, how to think about remembrance, and when to consider professional counseling.
What grief after losing a pet can feel like
The American Veterinary Medical Association’s Pet Loss & Grief brochure describes the loss of a companion animal as deeply painful, and notes that it can feel isolating because others may not fully recognize the bond. That acknowledgment is a useful starting point if your loss is being minimized.
Grief reactions are not uniform. Ohio State’s 2020 pet-loss brochure states that there is “no standard duration for grief.” It says the pain of loss normally eases with time, while recognizing that each person’s experience is different. In practical terms, you should not measure your progress against a calendar or against how other people seem to be handling it.
How to cope in the first weeks
Ohio State’s 2020 brochure recommends talking with supportive people about your memories and emotions, rather than relying only on distraction. Several approaches follow from that guidance and from the support options the university lists:

- Talk with people who understand the relationship. Friends or family who knew your animal, or who have lost one themselves, are often the most useful listeners.
- Talk about memories as well as the loss. Sharing stories about daily routines, habits or quirks can be part of grieving rather than a distraction from it.
- Consider a group or a hotline. A peer group or a call line can be useful when the people around you are not available or do not understand.
- Use reading material if it helps. Books and brochures on pet loss can name feelings you may be having and normalize them.

Direct social-work support at Ohio State
Ohio State’s Honoring the Bond program says its social worker can help with difficult end-of-life decisions, communicate with veterinary teams, help with family discussions, and refer clients to counseling and other resources. These services are limited to clients whose animals were treated at the university’s Veterinary Medical Center. If you are not one of those clients, use the public options above.
Helping children through a pet’s death
Ohio State’s 2024 child-focused guide says children may need explicit permission to grieve. It discourages quickly bringing home another animal to remove the pain of the loss. The guide explains that a child may read a quick replacement as a message that grief is unnecessary or that relationships are replaceable.

Many people find personal meaning in poetry or in writing a letter to their animal. The sources reviewed for this article did not provide a pet-loss poem with a verifiable author and published wording, so this guide does not quote one. Poetry and writing are presented here as personal options, not as an established clinical intervention.
