Animal statues can preserve a founding myth, mourn a historical tragedy or make a city laugh at itself. Three destinations stand out for clearly documented stories and distinctive settings: Singapore’s hybrid Merlion, Switzerland’s grieving Lion Monument and Brussels’ mischievous Zinneke-Pis. They are not a universal ranking, and they do not complete an evidence-based list of eleven; they are the three stops whose symbolism, authorship and dates can be stated with confidence.
Use this guide to decide which kind of encounter you want: a national emblem beside the water, a solemn memorial carved into rock or a contemporary street sculpture rooted in local speech.

How to choose an animal statue worth a journey
A memorable statue offers more than a photogenic silhouette. Before adding one to an itinerary, look for four things:
- Meaning: The animal should carry a story about the place, not merely decorate a plaza.
- Historical or artistic context: A named creator, date or event gives the work a traceable identity.
- A setting that changes the experience: Waterfronts, memorial gardens and city streets invite different kinds of attention.
- A realistic visit: Confirm current access, construction notices and interpretation facilities with the destination’s official visitor information before you go.
By those measures, the three documented examples below make a useful global shortlist. They are presented by character, not by rank.

Merlion, Singapore: a national story in one hybrid body
What the form means
The Merlion joins two images that might otherwise seem unrelated. Its lion head refers to the story of Sang Nila Utama and to Singapura, the “lion city” name associated with Singapore. Its fish body points to the island’s earlier identity as Temasek, remembered as a fishing village. The hybrid is therefore a compact origin story: the creature links a legendary naming moment with an older maritime past.
The tourism emblem was designed by Alec Fraser-Brunner, while sculptor Lim Nang Seng made the 8.6-metre statue. It was unveiled in 1972 and later relocated to Merlion Park. The National Heritage Board gives the height as 8.6 metres (2020), a useful specification when comparing it with other monumental works.

Why it merits a visit
The Merlion works simultaneously as sculpture, civic logo and orientation point. Water issuing from its mouth reinforces the relationship between the statue and Singapore’s waterfront, while the fish tail keeps the older Temasek story visible beneath the modern city symbol. You can read it as a deliberately compressed piece of visual history rather than as a realistic animal.

The Singapore Tourism Board described the park as one of Singapore’s five leading free-access attractions before COVID-19; that statement is historical context, not a current ranking. The park’s public setting means the experience is less like entering a museum and more like meeting an emblem in the middle of everyday urban movement.

How to plan the stop
- Check Singapore’s official visitor information for current park access, event closures and any temporary relocation notices.
- Allow time to view the statue from more than one angle. The profile makes the transition from lion to fish easiest to understand.
- Read the accompanying heritage information so the two halves of the creature are connected to Singapura and Temasek rather than treated as a generic fantasy animal.
Lion Monument, Lucerne: a memorial carved into grief
The event it remembers
Lucerne’s Lion Monument commemorates Swiss Guards who were killed while defending Louis XVI during the French Revolution in 1792. Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen designed the large stone lion, which was inaugurated in 1821. The subject is not a triumphant beast: the lion is shown wounded and reclining, making vulnerability the central emotional note.
Why the composition is so powerful
The monument’s symbolism depends on restraint. A lion commonly suggests strength, but Thorvaldsen’s design directs attention to the animal’s injury and stillness. The result is a memorial that asks visitors to contemplate sacrifice rather than celebrate conquest. Its scale and carved surface give the historical event a physical permanence that a plaque alone could not provide.
Rank #4

This is also the clearest example in the shortlist of an animal statue functioning primarily as a memorial. The Merlion explains a city’s identity; the Lion Monument preserves the memory of people who died in a specific political crisis. That difference changes how you should visit: quiet observation and reading are more appropriate than treating the site as a quick photo stop.

Zinneke-Pis, Brussels: a dog, a pun and a city’s self-image
What “Zinneke” conveys
Visit Brussels describes Zinneke-Pis as a 1999 sculpture by Brussels artist Tom Frantzen depicting a dog. In Brussels usage, “zinneke” commonly means a mongrel dog. The word can also describe someone who lives in Brussels without having been born there. The sculpture therefore turns a local expression into public art, connecting an ordinary animal with the city’s mixed, outward-looking identity.
A different kind of iconic statue
Zinneke-Pis is a deliberate counterpoint to solemn monuments and national emblems. Its humor is part of its meaning. Instead of commemorating a battle or encoding a founding legend, it invites recognition: residents and visitors can understand the joke, the affectionate teasing and the idea of belonging through adoption rather than ancestry.
That contemporary quality makes the work rewarding for travelers who want to see how a city represents itself in everyday streets. The dog’s presence is surprising precisely because it is not grandiose. Frantzen’s sculpture asks you to notice the relationship between public art and local vocabulary.
How to approach the visit
- Learn the two senses of “zinneke” before you arrive; without that vocabulary, the title’s social meaning is easy to miss.
- Look for the work as part of Brussels’ public realm rather than expecting a formal monument complex.
- Use the official Brussels visitor information to confirm the current location and any street works or access changes.
Compare the experiences before choosing a destination
| If you value… | Choose… | Because… |
|---|---|---|
| National symbolism and origin stories | Merlion | Its lion-and-fish body joins the Singapura legend with the Temasek fishing-village history. |
| Memorial art and historical reflection | Lion Monument | Its wounded posture commemorates Swiss Guards killed in 1792. |
| Contemporary humor and local language | Zinneke-Pis | The 1999 dog sculpture turns “zinneke” into a comment on Brussels identity. |
| Waterfront urban setting | Merlion | Merlion Park places the emblem in a public setting associated with Singapore’s maritime story. |
| Stone-carved monumentality | Lion Monument | The large carved lion uses stillness and injury to create its emotional force. |
| Street-level public art | Zinneke-Pis | The work’s impact comes from encountering a playful dog sculpture in the city rather than entering a memorial site. |
A practical checklist for visiting animal statues
- Verify the destination information: Check the official tourism or heritage page for opening arrangements, construction, crowd controls and temporary changes.
- Read before you shoot: Find the panel, plaque or heritage note that explains the animal’s local meaning.
- Study the silhouette: Identify which visual choices carry the story—the Merlion’s hybrid anatomy, the Lion Monument’s wound or Zinneke-Pis’s ordinary dog form.
- Match your behavior to the subject: A memorial calls for quiet attention; a humorous street sculpture can support a lighter encounter, but neither should be treated carelessly.
- Record the attribution: Note the creator and date so your photographs retain context after the trip.
Why this is a verified three-stop guide, not a ranked list of eleven
The phrase “11 iconic animal statues” suggests a complete worldwide survey, but a responsible travel guide should not fill out a number with unverified monuments. The three works here have documented creators, dates, locations and meanings that can be explained without guessing. They also demonstrate three distinct reasons an animal statue becomes memorable: civic identity, historical mourning and contemporary local humor.
Treat them as starting points for a future wider itinerary, and apply the same standard to any additional statue you consider: confirm who made it, when it was created, what event or language it represents and how visitors can access it now. A shorter list with a reliable story is more useful on the road than an impressive number built from uncertain claims.
