The Idaho Shelter Coalition episode of The Best Friends Podcast, published August 20, 2020, describes a statewide effort to connect animal shelters and welfare groups around reducing shelter deaths. Best Friends reported a 49.4% reduction in shelter killing in Idaho in 2019, but the episode page does not explain the calculation or which shelters were counted. Idaho later reached Best Friends’ no-kill benchmark: the organization reported a 93% save rate at the end of January 2026.
What is the Idaho Shelter Coalition?
The coalition is a collaboration among animal shelters and welfare organizations across Idaho. The podcast description says it formed roughly two years before the episode’s 2020 publication to bring together organizations in a large, mostly rural state. Its stated approach centered on communicating needs, offering peer support, and using data as a foundation for shared work.

Best Friends’ 2018 Animal Welfare Coalition-Building Action Kit describes a coalition as members agreeing on a common purpose and shared decision-making while each organization retains autonomy. It recommends establishing a leadership group, setting goals, identifying gaps and resources, and monitoring progress. These are general coalition-building recommendations in the kit, not claims that the podcast guests gave each specific instruction.

What did the 2020 episode report?
Best Friends’ episode description reported that shelter killing in Idaho had fallen by 49.4% in 2019 and said the coalition received Best Friends’ 2020 Network Collective Impact Award. The page does not state the reduction’s baseline, calculation method, or data coverage, so the percentage should be understood as Best Friends’ reported figure rather than a fully documented statewide measurement in the episode summary.
The episode is a snapshot of the coalition’s work and reported progress as of 2020. It could not have described Idaho’s later 2026 milestone.

It also said Idaho Humane Society altered 20 cats for coalition member Simply Cats ahead of the event.

What does “no-kill” mean, and what is Idaho’s status?
Best Friends defines no-kill as a save rate of at least 90% for animals entering a shelter. Its definition allows that some animals may have irreparable medical or behavioral conditions that compromise their quality of life and prevent rehoming. This is Best Friends’ benchmark; the term should not be assumed to have an identical definition in every organization’s reporting.

The announcement also said Idaho and Montana were the first states in the West to save every healthy and treatable shelter pet for a consecutive 12 months. This later milestone is distinct from the 2019 reduction reported in the podcast episode.
Best Friends’ February 2025 announcement said Idaho Governor Brad Little proclaimed February 5 as Idaho Loves Shelter Animals Day as part of a push to reach the benchmark that year. The May 2026 announcement attributes part of the final effort to volunteer transport, particularly for cats.

How should readers interpret Idaho’s shelter statistics?
A statewide rate is not a substitute for shelter-by-shelter data. Best Friends’ Idaho animal shelter statistics dashboard says its 2025 national dataset draws on an online data-sharing platform, shelter websites, information provided by shelters, state-government files, and public-records requests. It may estimate some data when shelter information is unavailable, and individual shelter data is updated monthly when possible.
Those qualifications matter when comparing figures. Check the reporting period, definition, species covered, data coverage, and whether estimates are used before comparing one shelter or state with another. Best Friends reported that 64% of U.S. shelters were no-kill as of October 2024 in a February 2025 announcement; that figure uses Best Friends’ measure and should not be treated as a directly comparable rate unless the underlying coverage and methods align.
