When a family is considering surrendering a pet, practical help with food, veterinary care, supplies, or temporary housing may make it possible for them to stay together. That is the central idea in Best Friends Animal Society’s August 12, 2021, episode of The Best Friends Podcast, featuring Heather Owen, executive director of Chicago’s One Tail at a Time Dog Rescue.
Why the episode reframes rescue
The episode description says Owen was moved by seeing heartbroken families surrender pets. She came to see that an animal-welfare organization could intervene before a pet needed a new home by helping people keep the animals they loved. In that framing, rescue is not limited to taking an animal in or finding an adopter; it can also mean addressing the circumstances that put a family at risk of separation.

Best Friends calls this approach “Pet Mutual Aid”: a growing collection of community-centered services, rather than one specific program or type of assistance. The episode describes support offered without invasive questions or judgment. That is the episode page’s description of the service approach, not a transcript quotation from Owen.

What Pet Mutual Aid looked like in Chicago
One Tail at a Time’s July 26, 2021, announcement described combining community relationships and local knowledge with the organization’s resources. Its examples covered several different needs:
#1 Best Overall
- Food Storage for All Pets: Keep dog kibble, cat dry food, bird seed, pellets, and treats fresh and organized in one versatile 33 Quart container that holds approximately 22–26 lbs of most dry kibble, depending on kibble size—not all 30 lb bags will fit
- Airtight Freshness Protection: Snap‑lock lid and foam-line seal lock out moisture and humidity, preserving flavor and nutrition while keeping storage areas clean and organized
- Easy to Move, Store & Refill: Comes with attachable wheels, giving you the freedom to roll the bin from your kitchen pantry to feeding station or tuck it away on a shelf when not in use
- Multiple Sizes & Lid Colors: Choose from a variety of BPA-free airtight bins in different sizes and lid colors for storing daily and specialty feeds, or snacks; Lightweight polypropylene design—flexible, not rigid like hard-sided bins
- Space-Saving Dimensions: Measuring 16.5" L × 10.8" W × 18.4" H (16.9" H without wheels), it’s compact enough for pantries, laundry rooms, utility shelves, countertops, or cabinets
Help before an owner surrender
The announcement described CRISP—the Chicagoland Rescue Intervention & Support Program—as a collaboration led by One Tail at a Time with rescues and shelters across the region. It offered free or low-cost resources and, through a partnership with Chicago Animal Care and Control, aimed to help potential owner-surrender pets remain with the families who loved them.
Food for people and pets
People & Pet Food Pantries paired pet-food support with neighborhood organizations. The 2021 announcement said the pantries took place at least twice monthly; that is a historical description, not confirmation of a current schedule.

Basic care and supplies

Services and supplies listed included vaccines, microchips, leashes, collars, flea and tick prevention, and spay/neuter appointments. The announcement also mentioned small vaccine clinics with pantry partners.
A place to stay during a transition

How to use the idea if you are struggling to keep a pet
The episode offers a useful way to think about the problem: identify the specific barrier to keeping the pet, then look for help suited to that need. It does not establish a universal referral service or guarantee that any particular resource is available where you live.
- Food: Ask local animal-welfare groups or neighborhood organizations whether they know of pet-food pantry support.
- Veterinary care or supplies: Ask about low-cost care, vaccine clinics, microchips, and basic supplies, and clarify what is free and what has a fee.
- Risk of surrender: Contact shelters or rescue organizations before making a surrender decision and ask whether they offer diversion or other support that could help your household keep the pet.
- Temporary housing: If a housing transition is affecting your pet, ask local service providers and animal-welfare organizations whether any temporary pet-friendly option exists.
For any resource, confirm its location, eligibility, costs, appointment requirements, and current availability directly with the provider. The two One Tail at a Time and Best Friends pages describe an initiative and examples from 2021; they do not establish today’s schedules or service rules.

What the sources do—and do not—show
The episode and announcement explain the model and list services, but they do not report a quantified outcome such as the number of pets kept with families or a rate of prevented surrenders. The 2021 pantry frequency should not be read as a current statistic. One Tail at a Time’s announcement expressed the commitment this way: “We won’t separate families. We will support our community, and we will have a damn good time doing it.”
