Iguanas Explained: 10 Essential Facts About Their Biology, Care and Conservation

Iguanas are a diverse group. These 10 facts explain green iguana habitat, climbing and swimming, daylight behavior, plant-based diet, adult size, defensive tails, reproduction, demanding captive care and species-specific conservation issues.

Iguanas are not a single, uniform animal. The group includes species that differ markedly in size, color, behavior, habitat and conservation status. The familiar green iguana (Iguana iguana) provides the main example here, but each fact is labeled when it applies only to that species. The practical takeaway is equally important: an adult green iguana is a very large, long-term reptile requiring specialized housing, lighting, diet and veterinary care.

1. “Iguana” describes a diverse group, not one interchangeable species

San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance notes that iguana species vary greatly in size, coloration, behavior and conservation status. A statement that is accurate for a green iguana may be wrong for a Fiji banded iguana or a Grand Cayman blue iguana. When reading care advice, conservation news or size claims, first identify the species.

The green iguana is widespread and commonly seen in the pet trade. Other species have highly restricted ranges and very different conservation needs. Treating every iguana as a green iguana can lead to incorrect expectations about adult size, habitat, diet and legal requirements.

2. Green iguanas are native to Central and South America and the Caribbean region

Mexico’s environmental agency PROFEPA describes the green iguana’s native range across Central and South America and the Caribbean region. Within that broad area, it uses forests, river corridors, mangroves, rocky locations and savanna-like habitats. This range is not evidence that every climate or enclosure is suitable in captivity: wild iguanas select particular temperatures, humidity levels, shelter and food within each habitat.

Geography also matters when discussing legality. PROFEPA reports the green iguana in CITES Appendix II and places it in a Mexican special-protection category under NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010. Those designations describe international trade controls and Mexican protection rules; they do not automatically state the pet laws in another country, state or province. Check the rules where you live before acquiring, breeding or transporting one.

3. Green iguanas are skilled climbers and swimmers

PROFEPA describes green iguanas as excellent swimmers and climbers, with an mainly arboreal lifestyle. In nature, they can move through trees and escape by entering water. Their abilities explain why a floor-only enclosure is unsuitable for an adult: usable vertical space, strong climbing structures and secure access to hiding areas are important design considerations.

Swimming ability should not be interpreted as permission to place a pet in an unprotected pool, bathtub or outdoor pond. A frightened reptile can drown, become chilled or escape. Any water feature must be shallow enough for the individual, easy to exit and supervised, with temperature and hygiene managed appropriately.

4. They are diurnal and bask after sunrise

Green iguanas are active during daylight hours. PROFEPA reports that they bask after sunrise and then search for food. Basking raises body temperature so the animal can move, digest food and carry out normal behavior; it is not simply a preference for bright light.

A captive habitat therefore needs a controlled temperature gradient rather than one uniform temperature. One area should provide the animal’s warmer basking zone while the opposite side remains cooler, allowing self-regulation. Measure temperatures with reliable instruments at the animal’s actual perches, not just at the room wall or on the lamp housing. Overnight conditions, ventilation and seasonal changes should be planned with a reptile-specialist veterinarian.

5. Adult green iguanas are primarily herbivores

WWF describes the green iguana diet as centered on leafy plants and fruit. PROFEPA notes that juveniles may consume insects and other animal matter, while adults are herbivorous. A young animal’s occasional animal-based feeding should not be used to justify a high-protein diet for an adult.

In practical terms, an owner must plan a varied, plant-based diet and avoid assuming that whatever a juvenile accepts remains appropriate as it matures. Nutritional balance is linked to lighting and mineral management: WWF warns that inadequate UV exposure and insufficient calcium or vitamin D3 can contribute to metabolic bone disease. Because exact food selection and supplementation depend on the animal’s age, health, enclosure lighting and local produce, obtain a diet plan from a veterinarian experienced with reptiles rather than relying on a single food list.

6. A green iguana can grow to around two metres

Green iguanas often look deceptively small when young. WWF gives an average length of 5.75 feet (1.7 metres) and reports animals up to 6.5 feet (2 metres). PROFEPA reports adult females up to 2 metres and males up to 2.2 metres. These figures come from different profiles and measurement contexts, so no single number should be treated as a universal maximum.

The length includes the tail, which occupies a substantial part of the animal’s total body length. Plan the adult enclosure, access route and handling space before buying a juvenile. A small starter tank may be useful temporarily for a hatchling, but it does not remain adequate as the iguana grows. Housing that cannot accommodate a large, active adult can cause injury, poor thermoregulation and chronic stress.

7. The long, flattened tail is a defensive tool

PROFEPA describes the green iguana’s flattened tail as something it can use like a whip when threatened. The tail is not a toy or a safe handle. Approaching from above, cornering an animal or restraining it abruptly can trigger defensive movement, bites or scratches.

Handle only when necessary, support the body and limbs, keep the animal close to a secure surface and supervise children. Allow the iguana to retreat rather than testing its tolerance. WWF also flags potential injury from bites, claws and tails, so protective handling and respect for warning behavior are part of responsible care.

8. Green iguanas lay eggs, with species-specific clutch figures

PROFEPA reports one breeding period each year for the green iguana and clutches of 13–31 eggs. That is a green-iguana figure, not a rule for every member of the iguana group. Reproductive timing and clutch size can vary with species, location, age and health.

Egg production also has welfare consequences in captivity. A female needs suitable nesting conditions and adequate nutrition, and reproductive problems can become emergencies. Do not attempt to induce breeding or incubate eggs without a plan for veterinary care, secure housing and the legal placement of offspring. If an adult female shows straining, lethargy or prolonged failure to lay after developing eggs, contact a reptile veterinarian promptly.

9. A pet green iguana requires specialized, expanding housing

WWF describes captive green-iguana housing as large and tall, with ventilation, climbing and hiding areas, a temperature gradient, suitable humidity and UVA/UVB lighting. The setup must scale with the animal: an enclosure that works for a juvenile cannot be assumed to work for a two-metre adult.

Core enclosure requirements

  • Vertical room: provide sturdy branches, shelves or other climbing structures that can support the animal’s adult weight.
  • Ventilation: exchange air while maintaining the humidity appropriate for the species and room conditions; stagnant, wet air creates health risks.
  • Thermal gradient: create a measured basking area and cooler retreat so the iguana can regulate its body temperature.
  • Hiding places: offer secure cover away from the busiest parts of the enclosure.
  • UVA/UVB lighting: provide suitable ultraviolet exposure and replace or service equipment according to the manufacturer’s schedule and veterinary guidance. UVB that is blocked, too distant or ineffective does not meet the animal’s needs.

WWF identifies adequate heat and UVB as common challenges and recommends access to a veterinarian who specializes in reptiles. Arrange that relationship before a problem occurs. Regular examinations can identify nutritional disease, growth problems and reproductive complications early.

Hygiene and handling

WWF notes that reptiles commonly carry Salmonella. Wash hands with soap and water after handling the iguana or anything in its enclosure, keep reptile equipment away from food-preparation areas and supervise children. People who are especially vulnerable to severe infection should discuss household risk with a medical professional before keeping a reptile.

10. Iguanas face very different conservation pressures

Conservation status cannot be generalized across the group. WWF warns that green iguanas released or escaped from captivity have become invasive in places including Florida and Hawaii. Never release a pet into the wild; contact a rescue organization, veterinarian or relevant wildlife authority if you can no longer keep it.

San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance lists habitat loss, introduced predators, illegal pet trade and poaching among pressures affecting iguana populations. Other species illustrate how restricted a range can be:

Species Range and size information Conservation detail
Green iguana (Iguana iguana) Native across parts of Central and South America and the Caribbean; WWF reports an average length of 5.75 ft (1.7 m) and animals up to 6.5 ft (2 m). WWF reports invasive populations in Florida and Hawaii after releases or escapes. PROFEPA reports CITES Appendix II status and Mexican protection under NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010.
Grand Cayman blue iguana Restricted to Grand Cayman; Smithsonian reports individuals can exceed 5 ft (1.5 m) and 25 lb (11 kg). Smithsonian reports CITES Appendix I protection and a head-start program releasing captive-bred animals into protected areas.
Fiji banded iguana Occurs on Fijian islands. Smithsonian estimates a 50% population decrease over 35–40 years, with habitat loss linked to mining, burning, logging and agriculture.

These examples show why a pet owner, traveler or conservation reader should name the species before drawing conclusions. A green-iguana care sheet cannot substitute for the requirements of a rare island species, and a decline reported for Fiji banded iguanas is not a decline for all iguanas.

How long do green iguanas live?

WWF’s profile estimates about eight years in the wild and 10–12 years in captivity. These are profile estimates, not guarantees. Lifespan depends on genetics, nutrition, UVB and heat, disease prevention, housing quality and access to veterinary care. Keeping an iguana is therefore a decade-scale commitment even when an individual does not reach the upper end of the estimate.

Are iguanas good pets?

A green iguana can suit an experienced keeper who can provide a very large enclosure, climbing space, controlled heat and humidity, effective UVA/UVB lighting, a plant-based diet and continuing reptile-veterinary care. It is a poor choice for someone seeking a small, low-maintenance pet. Adult size, defensive equipment, sanitation requirements and the risk of inadequate lighting or calcium make informed preparation essential.
