Ronin, an African giant pouched rat working with APOPO in Cambodia, became Guinness World Records’ “Most landmines detected by a rat” after detecting 109 landmines. APOPO and Guinness reported that tally through February 2025, alongside a separate count of 15 items of unexploded ordnance (UXO). The landmines—not the combined total of explosives—define the record.
What record did Ronin break?
Guinness World Records recognized Ronin for detecting more landmines than any other rat. APOPO announced the title in April 2025; Guinness reported the same figures through February 2025. Ronin’s deployment began in August 2021 in Preah Vihear Province, Cambodia.
The counts are distinct: Ronin detected 109 landmines and 15 additional items of UXO. The 15 UXO are not part of the landmine record tally. APOPO’s April 2025 announcement and Guinness World Records’ report give the figures and deployment context.
How Ronin compares with Magawa
Ronin surpassed Magawa, another APOPO HeroRAT and the previous rat record-holder. Guinness reported that Magawa detected 71 landmines and 38 other explosive remnants during his work in Cambodia. He retired in 2021 and died in January 2022.

How mine-detection rats help
African giant pouched rats can detect the scent of TNT used in many mines and explosive ordnance. In the field, a rat works across an area with a human handler. The handler watches for the rat’s trained indication of a suspected hazard; trained deminers then investigate and handle the dangerous item. The rats detect—they do not disarm, excavate, or dispose of mines.

AP’s account of the work quotes APOPO handler Mott Sreymom saying, “I really trust these mine detection rats.” She also described them as friendly and not easily frightened, saying, “They are like family.” Those comments reflect her experience with mine-detection rats generally; the report does not identify her as Ronin’s handler. The Associated Press report describes the field method and handler perspective.

Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC) records APOPO mine-detection rats as part of Cambodia’s clearance operations. Its 2022 annual report says 84 rats were deployed in Preah Vihear and Siem Reap across 62 minefields that year. That is a historical snapshot of operational use, not a current deployment count, and it does not mean rats cleared those minefields on their own.
