Researchers formally described the species in 2024 after studying specimens collected near Kumejima Island, Okinawa.
What is the “skeleton panda” sea squirt?
Clavelina ossipandae is a colonial ascidian, a kind of tunicate commonly called a sea squirt. Ascidians are chordates, but adult individuals attach to a surface and filter plankton from seawater; they are not mammals, fish, or other vertebrates. Hokkaido University estimates that about 3,000 ascidian species are known worldwide and about 300 in Japan.
The Japanese common name gaikotsu-panda-hoya means “skeleton panda ascidian.” The name points to two separate features: dark markings near the front suggest a panda face, and white vessels crossing the body evoke ribs. Its appearance inspired the nickname, but identification as a distinct species rests on anatomical and genetic evidence.
How scientists identified the species
Naohiro Hasegawa and Hiroshi Kajihara formally described the animal in a paper published online on February 1, 2024, in Species Diversity 29(1), pages 53–64. They compared its anatomy with 44 described species in the genus Clavelina and concluded that the specimens represented a new species. Read the formal species description.

Features used to distinguish it
The authors diagnosed the species by a combination of traits, rather than by its panda-like appearance alone:
- Colonies consist of completely free zooids—individual members of the colony that are not joined to one another.
- Zooids reach up to 20 mm long. Live zooids are transparent, with an elongated white patch between the oral and atrial siphons and four black markings.
- White transverse vessels, a black endostyle, and 10–14 stigmatal rows are among its internal features.
- Two longitudinal muscular bands run along each side, from the abdomen to the endostyle.
What the genetic analysis adds
The study reports partial mitochondrial COI sequences, each 810 base pairs long, from the holotype (the name-bearing specimen) and one paratype. The two sequences differed at 10 nucleotide sites, a 1.26% K2P distance, but translated to identical amino-acid sequences. The authors’ phylogenetic analysis supported placing the animal in Clavelina.

Where it was found—and what that tells us
The study specimens were collected by hand during SCUBA diving at Tonbara, a dive site south of Kumejima Island in Okinawa, in March 2021. Hokkaido University reports that researchers collected four colonies and examined their internal anatomy under a stereomicroscope. This establishes a collection locality; it does not establish the species’ full geographic range.
The discovery adds to knowledge of ascidians in a region where surveys are less complete than those around mainland Japan. A gap in surveys is not evidence that the species is rare or endemic. The available sources do not establish its population size, range, population trend, or formal conservation status.

Why the animal was familiar before it had a scientific name
The species was attracting attention among divers before its formal description. According to Hokkaido University, a Kumejima diving shop posted images online, and the animal became popular on social media from around 2017; it was also shown on television while its identity was still unknown. The formal scientific description came later, in 2024.
The species name combines Latin ossis, meaning “of bone,” and pandae, meaning “of the panda,” according to the university. Its full scientific name is Clavelina ossipandae.

What is—and is not—known about its conservation
The sources documenting the species do not provide a population estimate, a complete range, a trend assessment, or a formal conservation category. They also do not establish captive-care requirements or show that the animal is available for purchase. Its popularity online is a reason for care, not a basis for assuming it is abundant or suitable to collect: Hokkaido University warns that attention can contribute to overcollection or habitat damage and says those impacts should be prevented.
