Indiana’s 3 Formidable Sky Predators—and How to Stay Safe Around Them

Peregrine falcons, bald eagles and great horned owls are formidable Indiana predators, but that does not make them routine threats to people. Learn the documented behaviors, seasonal hawk risks and practical distance and pet-safety rules.

Indiana has no official list of the “most dangerous” birds, and Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) pages do not provide a ranking based on human attacks or injuries. A useful, evidence-based interpretation is to look at three formidable aerial predators—peregrine falcon, bald eagle and great horned owl—then add the hawk situations most likely to affect people, pets and poultry.

These birds are dangerous to prey because of how they hunt, not because they routinely threaten people. The practical safety rules are simple: keep well away from nests and roosts, leave an aggressively defending bird’s area, and call a district wildlife biologist when avoidance is impossible or someone’s safety is at risk.

What “dangerous” means in Indiana’s skies

“Dangerous” can describe a bird’s role as a predator without implying that it is a normal danger to humans. Indiana DNR’s species pages document hunting methods, prey and nesting behavior, but they do not establish comparative human-attack rates for Indiana raptors. No human injury or attack statistics appear in the reviewed DNR material, so a numerical danger-to-people ranking would be misleading.

This article uses an editorial standard instead: the three featured species are formidable predators documented in Indiana, and their ecological roles are distinct. A separate hawk section covers the encounter pattern DNR discusses most directly—seasonal nest defense around people, pets and roadsides.

Indiana’s three aerial predators at a glance

Species Documented hunting or ecological role Indiana context Human or domestic-animal guidance
Peregrine falcon Surprises medium-sized birds by diving and captures them in flight; DNR reports dive speeds of up to 200 mph. Nests on buildings, under bridges and on smokestacks along the Lake Michigan shoreline and in urban areas; first known recent Indiana nesting was in East Chicago in 1989. Keep clear of active nests and remember that the speed figure describes a dive, not ordinary flight.
Bald eagle Primarily eats fish; also takes waterfowl and small mammals. Usually associated with major rivers and other large bodies of water. DNR reported more than 350 nesting territories in 2020. Observe birds, nests and roosts from about 330 feet away.
Great horned owl A raptor predator that DNR identifies as a regular predator of young peregrine falcons. Included on Indiana’s official bird list, revised September 2021. Predation on wildlife is not evidence of a frequent threat to people; leave an area where an owl is acting aggressively.

1. Peregrine falcon: Indiana’s high-speed aerial hunter

How it catches prey

Indiana DNR describes the peregrine falcon as a predator of medium-sized birds. Rather than pursuing every target on the ground, it surprises prey with a steep dive and takes the bird in flight. The agency reports speeds of up to 200 mph for that dive. That is a maximum diving figure, not a claim that a peregrine cruises at 200 mph during routine flight.

The method explains why this species belongs in a discussion of formidable predators: a bird that can intercept another bird in the air has a specialized advantage over flying prey. It does not, however, translate into a documented pattern of attacking people.

Where peregrines nest in Indiana

The first known recent Indiana nesting occurred in East Chicago in 1989. DNR says today’s nests can be found on buildings, beneath bridges and on smokestacks along the Lake Michigan shoreline and in urban areas. Annual monitoring tracks those nests.

Peregrines remain protected under the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act and are listed as a species of special concern in Indiana. Do not approach, disturb or attempt to handle a peregrine, its eggs or a nest. The protection applies even when a nest is on a structure that people use.

An important predator-prey twist

Predation does not stop at the species most visible to people. Indiana DNR’s peregrine profile identifies the great horned owl as a regular predator of young peregrines. That fact demonstrates the owl’s ecological role; it is not a measurement of owl attacks on humans.

2. Bald eagle: a powerful fish specialist near water

Habitat and diet

Bald eagles occur mostly along Indiana’s major rivers and other large bodies of water. Fish are their primary food, although DNR also lists waterfowl and small mammals among their prey. Their association with shorelines, reservoirs and river corridors means people are most likely to see them where boating, fishing, hiking and bird-watching already occur.

What the 2020 territory figure means

Indiana DNR reported more than 350 bald eagle nesting territories in 2020. That is a dated state figure, not a current population estimate or a promise that every territory remains occupied today. It does show that bald eagles are established breeders in Indiana rather than rare one-off visitors.

The 330-foot viewing rule

DNR recommends observing bald eagles, their nests and roosts from approximately 330 feet—roughly the length of a football field. The distance protects birds from repeated flushing and reduces the chance that people will disrupt incubation, feeding or communal roosting.

“If you see bald eagles in Indiana, observe the birds, their nests, and roosts from a distance of 330 feet, which is roughly the length of a football field.”

Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Bald Eagle species page

Use the rule in practice: stop advancing when you reach the recommended distance, use binoculars or a long lens, and choose another route if your approach causes the eagle to change behavior. Never use a nest tree as a destination for a close photograph.

3. Great horned owl: a predator within the raptor community

What Indiana sources establish

The great horned owl appears on Indiana’s official bird list, which DNR revised in September 2021. The strongest species-specific evidence in the supplied Indiana material is behavioral: DNR identifies the great horned owl as a regular predator of young peregrine falcons.

That relationship makes the owl a formidable predator in an ecological sense. It does not support claims that great horned owls commonly attack people, nor does it provide a human-danger ranking. A wild bird’s ability to take another raptor’s young is evidence about prey, not about intent toward humans.

What to do near an owl

If an owl is acting aggressively near a nest, young birds or a roost, create distance rather than trying to watch the behavior more closely. Indiana DNR’s general raptor guidance is to avoid the area; when avoidance is impossible or health and safety are endangered, contact the district wildlife biologist. Do not corner, feed or attempt to capture the bird.

Why hawks matter in real-world encounters

Hawks are a useful, encounter-focused addition to this topic even though the three featured predators are peregrine falcons, bald eagles and great horned owls. Indiana DNR says hawks occupy habitats ranging from fields and wetlands to urban and suburban roadsides, parks and cemeteries. That broad distribution puts them closer to daily human activity than a bird seen only in remote habitat.

Seasonal nest defense

DNR says hawks may act aggressively in spring and summer while defending nests and chicks. A bird that swoops at a person near a nest is responding to a perceived threat to its young; the behavior is seasonal and localized, not proof that the species is generally dangerous.

Juvenile hawks may attack small pets, according to DNR. The guidance is especially relevant for cats, toy-breed dogs and other animals that can resemble prey. Keep pets close and supervised in areas where hawks are displaying defensive or hunting behavior.

What to do if a hawk swoops

  1. Leave the defended area. Walk away from the nest or chicks instead of confronting the bird.
  2. Protect your head and face while moving. Keep a steady pace and use a hat, umbrella or other ordinary object as a visual shield if needed; do not swing at the bird.
  3. Keep pets beside you. Shorten the leash, carry a very small animal and avoid leaving pets unattended outdoors during the active period.
  4. Choose another route until chicks are gone. DNR recommends avoiding the area where raptors are acting aggressively.
  5. Escalate only when necessary. If you cannot avoid the location or safety is endangered, contact the district wildlife biologist through Indiana DNR.

How to protect pets, poultry and property

Small pets

Do not interpret a hawk’s interest as a reason to harm or relocate the bird yourself. Supervision is the effective first step: remain outside with small pets, use a leash and move away from active hunting or nest-defense areas. Juvenile hawks are the group DNR specifically notes may attack small pets.

Poultry and outdoor enclosures

For chickens and other poultry, Indiana DNR recommends strengthening enclosures with materials such as fencing or netting. Netting is a physical barrier for domestic birds; it is not a device for protecting people from raptors and should be installed so birds cannot become entangled.

Buildings, bridges and nests

Peregrines may nest on buildings, under bridges and on smokestacks, while bald eagle nests and roosts can be near waterways. Treat any nest as active unless wildlife officials say otherwise. Keep construction, maintenance and recreational plans away from the site, and seek professional guidance before attempting exclusion work.

When a raptor is actually a safety issue

Most sightings require no intervention. A bird flying overhead, catching prey or resting near water is behaving normally. The situation changes when a bird repeatedly dives at people, blocks an unavoidable path, or creates an immediate risk to a person or domestic animal.

  • Routine sighting: Observe from a distance and continue without approaching.
  • Nest or roost nearby: Increase distance; for bald eagles, use the approximately 330-foot standard.
  • Repeated defensive flights: Leave the area and return only after the young have dispersed.
  • Unsafe or unavoidable location: Contact the Indiana DNR district wildlife biologist for guidance.
  • Injury: Obtain medical or veterinary care first, then report the incident to the appropriate authorities.

Sources and status notes

Indiana DNR’s Peregrine Falcon page supplies the dive-speed, nesting, protection and owl-predation information. The Bald Eagle page supplies habitat, diet, the 2020 territory count and the 330-foot viewing recommendation. DNR’s Hawks page and Bird FAQs cover habitat, seasonal nest defense, small-pet risk, avoidance and poultry-enclosure measures. The Birds of Indiana List, revised September 2021, confirms the state list that includes the great horned owl.
