Indoor cats can get fleas because the insects—or their eggs and other immature stages—can enter a home on pets, people, belongings, or from nearby animal environments. Fleas may also emerge from pupae that were already hidden indoors. Finding fleas now does not reveal exactly when or how they arrived.

How can an indoor cat get fleas?

Adult fleas feed on animals, but their eggs fall off into the places animals rest. Larvae and pupae develop in the environment, including bedding and carpets, rather than staying on the cat. A pupa can remain dormant for weeks or months before an adult flea emerges, so the flea you see may reflect an older introduction rather than a recent encounter.

These seven possibilities can overlap. They are plausible routes, not a way to identify the source in a particular home.

Seven possible reasons your indoor cat has fleas

1. Flea pupae were already in the home

Flea eggs can fall into carpets, bedding, and other areas where a pet spends time. Immature fleas develop there, and adults can emerge later to find a host. A cat may therefore encounter fleas without having recently gone outdoors.

2. Another household pet brought them in

A dog or another pet can carry fleas into shared spaces. Eggs can then fall where animals rest. If one pet is treated but another infested pet or the home environment remains a source, fleas may continue to appear.

3. A person carried a flea inside

A flea can hitch a ride on someone entering the home. This is one possible route, but seeing fleas on your cat cannot establish that a particular person brought them in.

4. An infested item came indoors

Used furniture or clothing can potentially carry fleas into a home. Their presence does not prove a particular item was responsible; it is simply another possible way fleas can get inside.

5. Fleas emerged when a host returned home

Pupae in protective cocoons can wait while hosts are absent. Vibration and increased carbon dioxide can cue adult fleas to emerge when a host returns. That is why noticing fleas after a cat comes back from boarding does not prove the cat picked them up there; fleas may already have been developing at home.

6. Nearby wildlife or an animal area contributed

Wildlife such as skunks and raccoons can seed a backyard with fleas. Nearby animal activity may be relevant if it can affect spaces pets use or the home environment, but an indoor cat does not need outdoor access to encounter fleas.

7. An earlier or continuing infestation was not fully controlled

Fleas may persist when prevention is applied incorrectly, home treatment is incomplete, or pets continue to encounter infested animals or environments. New sightings can also result from adults emerging from environmental stages; by themselves, they do not prove that a flea product has failed.

How to check whether your cat has fleas

Use a fine-toothed flea comb while your cat stands on white paper or a pillowcase. Look for fleas or small black specks, which may be flea feces, caught in the comb or on the white surface. Not finding anything during one check does not rule out fleas. A veterinarian can assess the cat’s history and skin and may use additional testing to confirm an infestation.

What to do if you find fleas

  • Contact your veterinarian for advice on products appropriate for your cat’s age and health, and follow the product directions.
  • Consider all relevant pets and the home environment as part of control; treating only the cat may provide temporary relief if other sources remain.
  • Do not use a dog flea product on a cat unless a veterinarian specifically confirms it is safe. Some products for dogs can be poisonous to cats.
  • Seek veterinary guidance if your cat has significant skin symptoms, is very young, or is unwell.
